Title: Powered risers dos/don'ts
Post by: Levieth02ng on January 23, 2018, 12:55:54 PM
Assuming that the connectors are correctly rated for the purpose, how can/can't you connect up PSUs, risers and GPUs?

Do the risers have to be powered via the same PSU as is providing the PCIe 6/8 pin power to the card in that riser? Or can you have one PSU providing power to the risers and another providing all the 6/8 pin power?

I'm just trying to get my head around these server PSUs with breakout boards that people are using, they only supply 6 pin, so are people powering risers and GPUs from these or just 6 pin PCIe to the GPU?

one rule i follow , gpus and risers (per pair) should be powered from same source, usually most of server psus 1200+ are enough to power 6x gpus+ 6x 6pin risers , mb and cpu can be powered by small pc psu or from same server psu using pico board , just dont mine on cpus if you drawing cpu power through pico , most of them are rated ~160+ w , but quality occasionally desires better , seen them burning.

Short answer: yes powered risers and gpu must be powered by same psu or else you risk burning your house down.
