I'm a newbie here. I don't have any idea what altcoin is. Please help me to know about it. Thank you.

Altcoins are cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin,the term altcoin comes from the word alternative to bitcoin which clearly explain what it is,altcoin is any cryptocurrency none other than Bitcoin.As a newbie you should know some basic abbreviations for you to undertand most of the threads here in bitcointalk,congrats and welcome!

Altcoin is any cryptocurrency or a token other than bitcoin. As a rule, some of them are based on their own blockchain (waves), and some of them are based on other cryptocurrencies blockchains, for example OMG based on erc-20 standart ethereum blockchain

An Altcoin is nothing but any other coin like Bitcoin. There are many Altcoins present in the market now like Etherum, EDOGE, etc. Many new Altcoins are being getting introduced very fastly so you should very careful about which one to buy.

What do you think,  Is the Etherum still an altcoin?

Altcoins are basically alternatives to Bitcoin, usually they seek to either replace or improve upon Bitcoin.
They are also digital cryptographic currencies that may or may not resemble Bitcoin, they also make use of a blockchain, but might have different features.

I wouldn't call ETH an altcoin.

Ethereum has industry backing, killer R&D, and a 2 Billion market cap.

Among Ethereum's achievements, only Bitcoin can compare, but even Bitcoin only has a market cap to show.

its simple, i haven't asked from anybody or searched it but i came to conclusion that AltCoins means ALTERNATIVE of BitCoin.

Doesn't matter what limitations and caps a coin has if it's taken code from Bitcoin then it's an altcoin.

I think your position only newbie because you are registered in three months ago. So you have more time to gain some knowledge in this forum. But you are not study anything this forum. First you should learn some simple abbreviations in this platform. Because everyone know the altcoin is just alternative coin. This is easy to understand the common users so you should improve yourself. Else you cannot survey in this forum.

Altcoins are coins or tokens that are not bitcoin. They are called such because it just simply means alternative coin.

When you define an altcoin ethereum will still be under altcoins not unless Ethereum was the first cryptocurrency which is not because Bitcoin was the first and the foundation of these alternative cryptocurrencies.If an altcoin could replace bitcoin's position it will be ethereum but it doesnt mean bitcoin will be called an alt when it is happened.

Alt - Alternative so altcoin stands as alternative currency because all other coins expect bitcoin are considered as alternative coin to bitcoin. They are tied with bitcoin pair so all of them get affected whenever bitcoin moves. Altcoin term was coined from start when there were only few coins made from cloning bitcoin.

At the moment most people only use it for investment or for trading. The actual function as a means of payment online, conventional money substitute has not been so much in use. Perhaps because of its unstable value or deliberately made unstable, so people prefer investment options rather than being a means of payment.
But Altkoin is still quite popular among crypto and still very much use it.

altcoin is a collection of crypto quantities. maybe the members here have first explained it. if you are really a beginner, you should take the time to find lots of reading in this forum. there is a lot of knowledge you can get and learn for your understanding and knowledge.

i think etherium is not altcoin its crypto like bitcoin but im not sure if thats true so lets find out what is the truth

To other people Altcoin is just an ordinary coin which has exact opposit amount, yes that is true to all but Altcoin is very usefull and some people use this as their transaction into third party. We all knew that there are different equivalent in specific amount that you are goin to receive.

altcoin is an alternative coin that will make your assets or bitcoin a lot but there are some fake altcoins and you should be careful with such altcoin models and altcoin will make you rich.

I see that everything has been well explained so far!  ::) I would just add, that the newbies usually start with the altcoins, because they are easier to collect and store. I remember when I was new in cryptocurrency I thought bitcoin is an altcoin because the word of alternative coin for me means alternative money. After I researched about cryptocurrency I found out that bitcoin is a "main coin" or "the mother of all cryptocurrencies" and other coin called "alternative coins" in short "Altcoins".
