Title: Running Bitcoin Core on Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.10.1 HELP NEEDED Post by: CryptoHodler30 on January 25, 2018, 09:39:46 PM I have a Toshiba C655d-S5200 which I believe has AMD chipset. I am trying to run Bitcoin Core on either Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.10.1. I think my hardware is too slow for 17.10 but if I'm using WiFi it doesn't freeze.
As soon as I turn off WiFi and connect the Ethernet wire and open anything at all it freezes. No mouse or keyboard input. Have to power cycle to reset. I have tried this: http://ubuntuguide.net/fix-cannot-connect-to-wired-internet-problem-in-ubuntu-or-ubuntu-vmware-guest When I did ifconfig it said it wasn't installed. I installed it and then it said eth0 doesn't exist. I have also tried to reserve an IP and when I go into settings it shows under dchp that it is using the reserved ip but it freezes either way. Can someone please help me figure this out? I really need to run Bitcoin Core on Ethernet and not wifi. That issue is because Linux is being booted along side windows. I got rid of windows.
When I run ifconfig -a everything looks correct. I even have internet for maybe 3 mins before everything freezes and I have to power cycle. Just wish I could figure out why it is hanging. I think my hardware is too slow for 17.10 but if I'm using WiFi it doesn't freeze. I don't think it is.Have you tried other Linux distributions? Try Linux Mint and let us know what happens. Do we have a off topic thread for this items?
I have tried Ubuntu 16.04, 17.10.1 and Mint 18 Mate (32 and 64 bit). Everything works fine on wifi. Maybe it's a kernel issue? I just don't know what kernel to up to. Or driver issue? I check the drivers and from what I found online I think they are correct. Yes it is also happening on live installation usb. I have ordered a usb to ethernet device to try that out. From my research it seems like Ethernet isn't tested as much as wifi. This is the only time I have ever really needed Ethernet to work and of course it doesn't. Not sure what else to try. Everything works fine on wifi. Maybe it's a kernel issue? Try using an older version of the Kernel then. All those that you've tried are Debian based now, can you try a RPM based one such as Fedora? When I searched for "Toshiba C655d-S5200 ubuntu ethernet" on Google, I got hits (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=83508) from 2011 and 2012. Back then, they recommended a kernel upgrade, or manually installing drivers for the Realtek chipset. This should give you the chipset number: Code: lspci | grep -i ethernet Title: Re: Running Bitcoin Core on Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.10.1 HELP NEEDED Post by: CryptoHodler30 on January 30, 2018, 11:33:40 PM So I ended up buying a usb to ethernet device and Linux stopped crashing on me. So it must be an issue with the native hardware. Seems to be fine now. Thanks for everyone's help
