Title: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: PEC07 on January 28, 2018, 03:52:19 PM Hey everyone, I think I may have lost all of my bitcoins trying to follow a guide to claim my BCH from my BTC on Coinomi unfortunately. This is the guide I used https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2062488.0 . I followed all the steps and everything was going correctly until everything completed. Last night I sent 0.75 BTC from my Multibit classic wallet to the Coinomi app following the steps provided in the guide. Once everything was completed it showed the same number in BCH, 0.75, that I had sent in BTC. None of my BTC was in the wallet after that on my PC or the app, only BCH could be found and showing just a value of 1k+, 0.75 BCH there. Coinomi didn't create a new BTC wallet on its own like people were saying it should. I am worried that It just converted my coins into BCH, 0.75 BTC to 0.75 BCH. The thought of losing over 7 thousand dollars for no reason is killing me inside. If anyone here could help me I would be so grateful. It still shows the BTC being in my wallet though when I type the receiving address into blockchain.info. I also notice that when I type the address into a similar site for BCH it shows that I have the BCH on the same BTC address as well. In an effort to try to recover my funds, I then created a BTC wallet on Coinomi and transfered the BCH it gave me into that wallet to see if my missing money would populate into the new wallet or the now almost empty BCH wallet, it didn't work. I have emailed Coinami support awaiting for a reply. I'm so scared right now.
Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: Xynerise on January 28, 2018, 03:56:47 PM It seems you sent BTC to a BCH address?
Can you post the TX ID or wallet address so we can confirm. If this was indeed the case, do not fret. Just import the seed for that address into either another BTC wallet, or get the private key from Ian Coleman's BIP39 tool (run it offline) and sweep the funds. I sweeped my wallet using the guide I linked in my first post, and it seems instead of splitting it did a weird conversion that seems to not have gone right. Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: Xynerise on January 28, 2018, 04:12:37 PM Paste the address you sent the 0.75 BTC to.
And the transaction ID of the second transaction you made from the BCH wallet on Coinomi Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: PEC07 on January 28, 2018, 04:16:29 PM Unfortunate, that's the time when you think: damn, should have used Coinbase! I know that would have been safer but nothing I can do now. I was going to put the BTC in my ledger wallet I just received after I did this. I was trying to claim my BCH from my BTC beforehand, of course now I regret my choice. However regardless, Coinbase does not fork coins for users. But just keeping my fingers crossed, this is one of the biggest regrets and I am just hoping someone can help. Well, all I can say is: let it be the worst thing which has happened to you and everything else be good! The bitcoin/bitcoin cash address you swept into Coinomi to claim your BCash is Code: 13vgvuUmt5cU73Q8EHknHV3FznVx1t9zPG https://blockchain.info/address/13vgvuUmt5cU73Q8EHknHV3FznVx1t9zPG It appears you were confused and thought that bitcoin and bitcoin cash are on the same blockchain and a transaction on one chain is reflected on the other. However this is not true and the 0.748BCH you had as 0.748BTC was swept into Coinomi while the original 0.748BTC is still intact in the address (your Multibit classic wallet, according to you) TL;DR: you swept Bitcoin Cash, not bitcoin into Coinomi therefore your bitcoin is still on the same address/private key it has been all along. Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: PEC07 on January 28, 2018, 08:24:04 PM Thank you Xynerise for all your help :) . I figured it all out. Will write info here incase others run into the same issue.
The main thing to remember for future use by anyone reading this, transfer your coins out of the wallet with BTC before sweeping. They are not needed there, long as was there before the fork date your good.
Now I just also claimed my Bitcoin gold with Coinomi after I fixed my situation, with no issues. Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: HCP on January 28, 2018, 09:29:25 PM
The confusion stems from the fact that when BCH was forked, it's creators deliberately attempted to become "the" Bitcoin, so they did not change the address prefixes (”1” and "3") like most altcoin do... The end result being that any given "1"-type or "3"-type "Bitcoin" address is also a valid "Bitcoin Cash" address. However, these addresses exist on a completely different blockchain. Think of it like having a USD bank account at BankABC with account#12345 and also having a EUR bank account at BankXYZ with account#12345. Same account# ("address") but different currency at different bank ("network"). Quote

Unfortunately, you choose to sweep with Coinomi and paid a premium fee rate of 200 sats/byte which seems a bit of overkill given the current network state :-\ Given you were moving 44,000 bytes worth of tiny inputs, that cost you almost 0.09BTC! :o It's highly likely you could probably have paid less than 1/4 of that to move your BTC. :-\ Title: Re: Help, lost all my BTC trying to claim BCH on Coinomi Post by: PEC07 on January 29, 2018, 03:20:13 PM

Now that does make more sense to me the way you explain it. Definitely a lot of mistakes were made here and I would have done it differently had I knew. Just happy I got my BTC back, though it cost me the BCH I never knew I had until recently lol. At least now I know a bit more about the process and can do it a bit better next time, was able to get my BTG with no issues after this mistake. But really am grateful for people like Xynerise and you HCP in this community who try and help others such as myself, Ty =) . Hopefully if anyone runs into a similar issue they will see my thread and not make the same mistake. Definitely scary business if you never did it before, or at least it was for me. |
