You could get away with a much cheaper power supply and save money not using a case otherwise everything is solid.

if you follow the guide found on this forum, setting up a fresh 11.04 is rather easy, but u cant skip any steps ;)

Yeah I would go with a slightly less PSU, and a shitty case.

I was also thinking a cheapo motherboard with cables, that would also keep the GPUs very cool.

Your spending $1.23 for each MHash/sec capacity.  My seven rigs average $1.10.

You will need some storage for the operating system and software.  I use a usb stick.  But that is real slow and setting up takes a lot of reboots.  I would suggest an inexpensive hard disk.  One of my rigs has an 60 GBytes SSD drive, I wouldn't buy one they cost $120, but mine came with a computer I bought off of craigslist.  I love it cause it boots so fast.  You will spend a lot of time booting the computer.

The case looks nice but is not necessary.

I run 4 5870's off of a 850 Watt power supply.  It draws 700 Watts.

Having a low PSU can be risky I would suggest 1000 range, 1500 isn't needed.

sounds like a nice rig but I would def spend less on the case and PSU

I've seen the CPU be the bottleneck in my system while solo mining and I run a quadcore phenom II. If you are going solo I would consider getting a CPU with more cores. Don't worry about spending extra for larger CPU cache if this rig will be for mining only.

Also, at a minimum use Arctic Silver or better thermal paste for the CPU heatsink. The stock cooler and paste didn't get the job done for me (core temps exceeding 70 Deg C and emergency system shutdowns - not at all fun).

Why buy a case?  How much are you spending on the hard drive?  Storage is a big problem.  You'll see people buy a cheap spin-up hard drive, but a solid-state one is worth the few extra dollars for a lower power consumption rate.  Skip the 6970, it's not worth the money.  Best bet is 5x 5830s and 5 PCI x16 riser cables.  It's gonna get hot as all hell, what's your cooling solution?  I use a dozen box fans and a crude bit of duct work.  If you go with the Sempron, use Ubuntu.  Windows will bottleneck without a milti-core processor.

$2000 for ~$16 a day and dropping (1x 6990 got me this ~ 1 month ago). Resell or not, dosent sound like a wise investment to me.
