Economy minister Johann Schneider Ammann, Said "Switzerland want to be a crypto nation" as at the time when many developed and developing countries are expressing their negative options on cryptocoin and we are hearing news that many countries want to ban it. What is your take on this move or comments?

News sounds positive, but we've heard elites and other nations espouse crypto before and nothing or very little has come of it (auroracoin anyone?).

Am sure it will happen eventually, still it sounds like a positive step.

Source says nothing much about it. However, I heard same kind of news few months ago that Switzerland is going to invest into crypto currencies and they are making their own coin, something similar.

However the news soon got desiccated in the middle of no where but when the news came for the first time it was very chilly one for everybody here and everyone thought that it will bring the revolution in the crypto world. Unfortunately the idea went off soon and nothing much happened about it. Im not sure what are they bringing this time into effect but again if they do contribute to the crypto then its good for us. But lets see what they really do and then we could talk about it more deeply.

Financial technology nowadays are necessary for a nation growing more rapidly, and i think nation with open minded for take on technology application will grow more fast than a nation who wouldn't.

The move itself is nice but it will be better if they will really execute it and become a crypto nation. It is very likely that ilthe crypto nation plan of theirs would not be set into action. I also doubt if it will be approved by their government. Probably this bit of news will continue to be just a plan unless they officially announced it to their citizens. It is also a huge step for crypto as it can be the dawn of cryptocurrency's revolution.

Don't know why but I feel all countries should go with this decision and we can see millions of dollars flooding into the crypto just like that.

Switzerland is country where Swiss bank makes the real move when it comes to huge money (black money in would say). With that said I believe this will be easier for them to accept and implement the new set of rules for the crypto. If the output of this acceptance is great then rest of the countries may start following them.

I mean who can stop them earning huge taxes on that kind of money and enriching the countries situation. Jealous countries will follow soon.

To the OP. I think Switzerland will be a crypto nation. I love this country and the way they care about their citizens. It is a very Bitcoin friendly country alrerady, you can google about it.

Switzerland is traditionally the land of financial services - so if bitcoin and cryptocurrency are the next iteration of finance, of course they want to be in on it. I would have been more shocked if they announced they were banning it.

After all these negative news regarding on crypto adoption. At last I have heard some positive news. Thanks for the link brother.I do still believe that no matter how many countries would see negative to cryptos but yet theres still some countries which do consider and do see its positive side on adopting it. If the whole world began to develop many years ago as a Swiss, now there probably would not be poverty. Correctly that they want to be cryptonation, they see this as a big profit, unlike many others who are still trying to take control of new financial flows.

Stable non-corrupt countries have nothing to fear from bitcoin and much to gain from the technology.

Dodgy countries have citizens who are determined to hide their money from their corrupt govts, which is why they are trying to ban bitcoin.

Well this could give cryptos some air of legitimacy though I would be a bit reserved. Switzerland is bankland, so it's likely the bankers themselves cooking up stuff to remain relevant.

Switzerland is a special case, they also recently voted to return their banking system and currency to a gold based standard in order to restore plain capitalism in the country.      Their central bank has operated a fixed link to Euro was unable to continue when ECB continually printed more money taking Switzerland into a devaluation scenario.

So the country has gone to polar points on the scale of monetary policy.   It might even be possible they take part in crypto, the other largest participant is Japan which engaged in a giant QE program and devaluation of currency to the detriment of the population.
    The other factor to note with Switzerland is its divided taxation system and city state type operation, its quite unique.   Famously USA has become altered from states to centralised to Federal concerns with many states objecting at times but never significantly altering Washington policy.   So I think its possible parts of Switzerland could encourage crypto more then others.

They are staying away from most international conflict. And one of the most important things is that Switzerland  is not a part of the EU so european establishment won't have a power there.

Switzerland has always been a country which provided to secure the capital. After the Swiss banks ceased to keep the banking secrecy, the people have ceased to use their services. Probably they realized this and want to reclaim the capital. Belarus is experiencing a famine of investment because of sanctions. They probably want to bypass the sanctions by using the cryptocurrency. It is also logical.

Compared to a relatively small population they have big and successfull banks.

Thats probably a point missed, Switzerland previously had a reputation for very discrete banking.  However since world reserve currency became regulated by US government as primary issuer of dollars, it was no longer possible not to reveal personal details on request of accounts normally outside the US system.    USA can exclude Switzerland from dollar trade and that would be a far greater loss.
In the past world trade was tied to gold as was the currency of Switzerland, so they have lost that independent standard.   Obvious thing would be to create a a crypto similar to the old banking standard with unrevealed details of participants .

They are taking the positive that the cryptocurrency market offers, particularly it is good that they are given opportunities to cryptocurrencies, but at the same time they are not going to fully access until there are other governments that also allow it, what happens is that there is a certainty that if they accept it, it will be on their own terms and we will not know to what extent it would become an equal market to that of the currencies.

This is not new. Switzerland has been friendly to crypto. I bet you haven't heard that a school in Switzerland has started to accept bitcoin as tuition fee payment.  Though I can't remember if they are the first school to do it.

This is really welcoming news because there are a lot of nation who are against bitcoin. At least we have one nation who is very open minded, willing to take the risk and embrace this new technology. Don't worry about those banning bitcoin and cyrpto. They really don't know how it can improved their economy and its not really design to be used by criminals.

Switzerland by all means have always been a economy friendly economy. In a way that they want to be the nation where the whole world can save their money with. We all know about the old stories of Swiss Banks and how they are used to launder tons of money. This news of Switzerland wanting to become a crypto nation is great news. It will move crypto currencies into greater credibility when a country adopt cryptocurrencies and mint their own crypto coin too.

You're talking like there isn't much crypto-friendly countries, but I disagree. What about US, England, Japan? Not even talking about Netherlands, where there is city, at which you can actually purchase stuff with bitcoins. Yes, some of them imposed a taxes on BTC, but it should be considered as good news too, because it's an important step towards BTC legalization.

Sometimes back, I did read that Switzerland railway ticket counters are going to sell bitcoin. But never heard anything after that. But in between time Japan declared bitcoin as a legal payment system. So, there will be no significant impact we can expect what an economic Minister is considering compared to what their government will be declaring about crypto currencies.

I mean to say instead of giving some signal about crypto currency adoption like these, why not they just come out with a clear regulation about crypto currencies because that alone will be giving significant impact to crypto currency industry and also for a better economy growth for their country.

This is not democracy, but nothing more than common sense. I loved the news - expected recovery of the cryptocurrency market and increase its capitalization given this information.

Yep, really a motivating news for crypto investors, after all the negative news spread this one makes sense that a country has knowledge and accepting crypto for future development. The other news like some countries like China have imposed ban on bitcoin is not actually a formal news, if it all that is true they can only ban transactions in their country but cannot ban bitcoin as a whole. Anyway, good news heard after Japan's move in crypto.

Brilliant, it goes to show that other progressive countries are not going to stand by and let these silly bans happen. They are understand the technology, they aren't greedy about it, and thus they will adopt the technology at a much faster rate which will only benefit their citizens in turn. Shame on you Korea and China we all know why you are "banning" bitcoin and cryptos right now and it isn't for the good of the citizen (which is what you claim)!

Well, bitcoin seems to have been a real pain in the ass for the governments of the countries you mention (Korea and China), and we have yet to see what Switzerland and other European countries which are seemingly pro-bitcoin would be up to if bitmania scaled up there to the level it was in these Asian countries. My point is that we don't know how the "progressive" countries would actually react if people got engaged in bitcoin as deeply as they were in Asia.

I believe that Switzerland will provide the opportunity to use cryptocurrency not only its citizens but also citizens of other countries. Only it can be very difficult. Its funny how Switzerland is thinking of this, when they have Swiss banks, got to see what they have got to say, apparently they are also banks at the end of the day. Swiss banks are known for anonymity, now if Swiss becomes a crypto economy, we know what is going to happen ;).

Not any Swiss banks will accept you without giving your identity.The Bank privacy period is gone for 1 or 2 decades now. Switzerland can exchange information with other countries in the context of administrative assistance according to OECD standards as well information in the context of mutual legal assistance.

It is a great new for crypto world since it would open up a new opportunity for ICO to start in their nation and could give a boost on cryptocurrency. We could expect price hike if their are more nations to be open up on cryptocurrency.

I am sure a lot of people didn't even bother to read what the article is all about before jumping to comment on how good the news and how its going to be make bitcoin $50,000 over night but reading that article made me realize two things and that dream everyone is happy about, might be far from coming to reality.

1. The comment is a reported statement because the article didn't quote the minister directly but state that another body reported it and when the source cannot be traced directly, the probability of distortion is high.

2. In the said article, there is a caption that says "We think there is huge potential — but the market is not as disciplined as we want. We want it [the ICO market] to prosper but without compromising standards or the integrity of our financial markets.” and that is where the challenge because everything he was reported to have said is a conditional statement and what would necessitate that seems difficult to achieve.

Eventually it may happen but not yet. Bitcoin just isn't able to be a country currency it is far away to be something like for the simple reason that it is not stable. So in time when bitcoin stabilize , nations may take it for serious to consider bitcoin as a currency and it would help better the economy as it is decentralized.

It would be doing that too. It appears to me that Switzerland understands the true worth of crypto and how important it is to be a crypto nation in order to survive in the future. Well,  that sounds positive, but first, I’d like to ask– are you from Switzerland? If you are not,  then why are you so excited about the news,  cause it has nothing to do with you. And know it, if Switzerland happens to adopt the use of crypto as a their real currency,  it wouldn’t be bitcoin,  they will create their own crypo that will be issued out by their banks, and it will need a lot of verification, cause its not going to be like bitcoin.

Saying that they want to become a "crypto-nation" will make readers think that they will be transferring into a cryptocurrency only mode of payment. As they are only looking into possibility of having their own cryptocurrency market without any compromise with the standards and integrity on their financial market. I must say it is a good move as they will be one of the nations where they have their own regulated market.

It’s interesting how some countries are really embracing cryptocurrency technology while others want to overregulate it. There are a few countries like Switzerland that see the benefits of Bitcoin and want to evolve with it. Personally I am satisfied that more countries join, there are very few who support the movement of cryptocurrencies, but it is very positive that although there are few who join in this. The important thing is to see how this will favor the region of cryptocurrencies, and how the Swiss would favor in this case if this country became one of the main ones in enabling the circulation of cryptocurrencies.

The country is indeed integrated into the European economy but it could be said with no less certainly that it is very well integrated into the world economy as well. On the other hand, it is not part of the Eurozone and has it own currency, the Swiss frank, which is rightfully considered one of the most stable currencies out there. So I don't think that the European regulations, whatever they might be, would seriously affect their own decisions toward cryptocurrencies.

I am Swiss, based in Geneva. The local government is looking towards crypto as a way to fuel the economy and become the european hub for cryptocurrency. Silicon valley -> Crypto valley

This is good news for the entire cryptocurrency community and ICO projects in general. Switzerland has always been an innovative country, if its government develops rules for ICO and crypto exchange services, then we can expect positive changes in relation to crypto currency in other European countries, which will lead to higher prices for crypto currency and interest in ICO projects.

We still should find out if this is the personal opinion of the Minister of Economy or if he has been speaking on an institutional level. Sometimes good politicians have good ideas but then their pupeteers pull their strings and their behavior changes at once.

Actions speak louder than words. Words don't mean a lot now anyway, and in your place I wouldn't have futile hopes. If the US and EU crack down on bitcoin heavily, Switzerland will have to back off even if they are overall friendly toward cryptocurrencies. Let's not forget how Washington eventually made the Swiss banks share private info on the accounts opened in these banks by the US citizens and even pay for that.

Now we just have to hope they'll translate these words into reality. They may talk as much as they want, but we need clear steps in this direction.

I was hearing a similar news for India but then a  leading private company here announced its own coin. It was in the news for some time and then it settled down. I guess the government in India is still waiting to see if bitcoins are some sort of scam or not. They will never want to get associated with something resulting in huge loss for its citizens. Any ruling party will then have to allocate some money for supporting such people. Also, this can be a huge election issue here and a party may loose elections if  a lot of people suffer because of this.
