Title: MERIT
Post by: rohanpandav on January 30, 2018, 09:58:29 AM
People can illicitly transfer Merit to others. What's the point of the merit system if such things happen?

What's the point in anything if it can be illicitly abused? Might as well just get rid of every law ever created. No point in qualifications either when you can just buy one off the internet. I don't think any system where you can gain some reward or qualification or kudos will be free from abuse but that doesn't mean it is worthless.

That can happen but still, this might be a good idea because there's currently little incentive for the older members to help out newbies knowing that they likely won't have any sMerits to give out (unless other older members see the random act of kindness I guess). The problem would lie in making sure the system doesn't encourage any more account farming, which is exactly what the Merit system hoped to combat, while making sure it gives enough incentives for older members to actually bother.

Merit sucks. I've been studying threads and posts and now at this point it's obvious that people don't award merit to others for good posts, they reward it because they know each other on here. Very sad system. It needs to be trashed or redone.

Wise comment. You just changed my opinion about merit system.

No, the main system is to reward great content and for those people to earn benefits they deserve. Lazy unscrupulous people will try abuse it though just like they will try abuse or exploit any other system, but as I just said it doesn't make it worthless.

This is the problem right now about the merit system but it doesn't mean its not good, it just so happen that we have our own standard and we can't dictate people from giving merit if you just saw a quality post then you might either give merit or just scroll down because you can't do anything about it.

If you really want to help people from getting merit then try to post the link of their quality post here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2819141.0
Don't worry, later on everyone here will adopt the new system and give merits to those who really deserve it.

Why there is not a beta version, a referendum?
I think this system is too poor. There should be a large and full function merit system, not just a button and click on it, put some merits. it's not like that. It should have more function, maybe like if someone report some fraud, and Mod record it, after 10 times reported successfully, reporters earn merit...just example, many other can go with this merit system

The only good Merit has done is that it prevents account farming and I am seeing improvement in the content as well. But, at this stage, the main problem is how to get MERIT.

Merit sucks. I've been studying threads and posts and now at this point it's obvious that people don't award merit to others for good posts, they reward it because they know each other on here. Very sad system. It needs to be trashed or redone.

When merit isn't given to good authors, it makes me sad :C

And your point about exchanging merits, for instance, someone sends you 10 merit and you send back 5 merit back and so on, this would just spoil the system and will give the undeserving a better position in this forum.

But what if people trade merit, like I mentioned above? Or what if people just buy Merit and then merit lands to some lazy unscrupulous person and he's in a better ranking than the one who really deserves a better position but doesn't get merit points.

What about it? The world isn't going to end nor does it mean the whole system is broken. The people who are exploiting it should be dealt with as appropriate.

I'm not sure I would go as far as that, but there are certainly some distortions in the awarding of merit points. Whilst I was posting about the merit system, I picked up 38 points fairly quickly. As soon as I stopped, and began starting threads about the Bitcoin system, and posting in such threads, I haven't received one merit point. This may be that my posts are rubbish, or it may be that the forum priorities are now involved with crypto bounties, and the increasing of the size of sig spammers advertising potential.

Exactly forum priorities are now involved with crypto bounties and very few people care giving merit on regular threads in bitcoin system or discussion.

Oops! I found your post by chance. There is link to thread on negative side of merit system:

(1) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2833242.msg29220773#msg29220773
(2) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2833242.msg29230124#msg29230124

There are both negative and possitive sides of merit system. In my thread, I have discussed about how the behaviours of higher-ranked users will (might) change over time due to merit system.

The idea is to paint the trust to random users, just because of the slightest mistake!

Are you going to play the victim now?
"Merit is bad because I was abusing it and got -trust, but it's not my fault it was just a small mistake!"
Let us all have a minute of silence for your neutral trust lost forever in the great red sea.

Not true, I speak to very few people here on a personal level. I’ve been giving out Smerits based on what I see as good, constructive posts that hold value to people in the community. Stop being so paranoid buddy & concentrate on posting high quality stuff & you’ll get rewarded.

and what if the thread is spammed with posts which don't deserve merit? The posts which deserve merit will get covered with spam posts.

You are right, not all useful posts get merit
try you read the posts in every forum, there are many good postings that do not get merit, whereas the usual writing gets merit
I think merit is useless
