Title: Do you get demerits when you merit another person?
Post by: Jake_Shannen on January 31, 2018, 12:57:31 AM
With the new system of ranking up and another person giving you credit for a quality post, the process of ranking up really became interesting. Just how does this merit system works in actuality? Are these merits transferred?

Based on what is written here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit I would say that you only lose sMerit (sendable merit) when giving +1 merit for somebody's post.

There's various information on the Meta board, and an indication on how this affects the ranking is detailed here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.0

Your Merit will not be affected when you transferred smerit to user/s, everyone has spendable smerit (you can see your available smerit to spend once you try to give others). smerit should only be given to quality posts and threads. A new rank system has been implemented, every rank needs a required number of merits to rank up.

right now I'm hoarding them (mine, mine, mine)

not sure why....seems silly in that I've gained FIVE more

the whole thing is confusing....HODL coins....HODL merit right?

(bitcointalk...trying to get me to change my HODL ways as BTC tanks under 10,000 USD...its a plot I tell ya!)

First I start to spend my merit points...and see how EASY it is...then the call will be to spend some spam coins...then

BTC......I'm not falling for this obvious.....behavioral experiment.......

(sorry, too much caffeine...as BTC price tanks...caffeine goes up!)

But I mean really, are you supposed to BLOW all your merit points like 'gold stars' in kindergarten and when you hit zero

you have proved you are involved enough reading posts ...for all this too matter?....

kinda like bailing out a boat..in order for it to float.....?

whatever still stinks of messing up my HODL mentality..when I am most vulnerable at below 10k btc......

(maybe merit is supposed to make me feel good and buy btc...hmmmm...wanders away mumbling to self..kicks can....grrrrrr)

Thank you, I appreciate it. So basically it really got really hard to rank up because even if you post quality ones, I still need to be acknowledged by those with expendable merits.

I've seen users tried handing out -merits i'm not sure if the receiver's merits were reduced.  Every time a user receives a merit he/she also receives 0.5 sendable merits. There's no good in hoarding sendable merits because these are replenished every month and we have "source merits" these guys have an infinite amount of sendable merits.

If you think one of your posts is worth a merit you can go to bill gator's thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2819141.0) and link your posts.

I don`t know, I've never click sMerit to anyone.

I like it this way, let's just say it is an achievement, for one's success in creating quality threads.
But suspicions arise, what if someone log in with another account, and did click sMerit, to his other personal account.

So if you're a Sr. Member or higher you have atleast 50% merits to give out since every merit you have you get 0.5 sendable merits. Thanks for this, I'm really learning about the new system and I've tried reading in the meta also where topics like this is discussed more.

I don't think this is being made clear enough...

No matter how many sMerits you send to people, your merit points will never go down.

Once you receive merit points, they will always be yours no matter how many you send away. The number of merits on your profile can ONLY go up and cannot go down. Merit and sMerit are completely different.

I guess that's another issue. I also like it this way, quality over quantity. The merit system focuses on the quality of the posts. 😊😊😊😊

The new system is doing its job well, but it looks like it will be a challenge when we want to increase our rankings in the future when no one wants their sMerit for anyone. I think this system has many limitations. I hope it will be a positive change in the future.
