Title: Bitcoin suddenly failing on start
Post by: FreeMoney on January 18, 2011, 01:19:19 PM
Bitcoin was working fine, I restarted, Bitcoin auto opened, and crashed. I opened it again, crashed again, I reinstalled, crashes every time. I uninstalled and installed again, no good. Everything else seems to work fine. I can't think of any cause. The only major thing I've done recently was install Ubuntu, but that was 2-3 days ago and it worked fine after that, and it shouldn't matter anyway.

I have to sleep soon, but I appreciate any suggestions of what to try and I'm curious about what caused this.

edit: It crashes really fast, if that matters. And it says "bitcoin.exe has stopped working" and "close the program" button.

edit again: I uninstalled, restarted and reinstalled and it works now. Has this happened to anyone else?

Have you tried to installed the previous version ?  Have you tried to launch bitcoin with a brand new .bitcoin directory ?

I got a call from someone recently with a similar problem.  He was using Windows 7 (the 64 bit version).

I told him to use http://mybitcoin.com instead.   :)

IMHO, most "average users" should be using a website, rather than bitcoin software.

bitcoin software is mainly for highly technical people, or people very interested in privacy (ie. they might run bitcoin over Tor).

I have no problem with 64 bit Windows 7.  Does he use Microsoft Security Essentials? :-\

or people interested in not losing their bitcoins due to some site either (a) absconding with people's bitcoins or (b) getting compromised and having its bitcoins stolen...

until there are real corps out there, with real account insurance and everything (think SIPC), i can't really recommend anyone to stick all their bitcoin wealth onto $randomsite.
