Title: possible scam allert
Post by: gica_contra on September 02, 2013, 07:16:12 PM
Just received a PM from a guy offering to give me some free NVC. Trick is I had to download the wallet from a site spelled a little differently from the official one. If you fell for this scan/move coins/unplug computer/pray.

Hahah that was a very very blatant and bad attempt of a scam. I'm pretty sure you can leave out the "possible" in your thread title :D

Hi,
My Novacoin giveaway has began! I am a large holder in NVC and want to boost it's popularity. To do this I am offering the equivalent of 15$ in NVC for every person that gets the NovacoinQT wallet and sends me the newly made address.

I will be doing this up to the one hundredth address I receive and depending on the results I get on the NVC market I will either continue or discontinue these giveaways. Please do not attempt to send me multiple addresses, I have my ways of finding out. After downloading the wallet send me a pm on here with your NVC address. Hope you realise the investment opportunity that is Novacoin!

To be qualified you must get the wallet from Novacoin.org and generate new address. Don't send me old NVC address or address generated from exchange sites.

Thanks

This is what they sent me

These guys try too hard. The last sentence is a dead give-away. I first thought of giving my Cryptsy address but since he has the magical ability of telling exchange addresses from personal ones as well as old ones, I guess no free NVC for me :(

http://sourceforge.net/projects/novascoin/files/

I believe the scammer removed the infected client.

His "novascoin" link has been removed and the download link on his site now redirects to the real novacoin sourceforge.

Here's the virustotal scan of his QT:

I guess that my report was read by sf.net staff, finally.

But the new page appeared:

_https://sourceforge.net/projects/novascoinqt/

Just sent this file to DrWeb, Kaspersky and Symantec.
