Title: Can all crypcocurrency coins and tokens be stored on the Trezor Hardware wallet?
Post by: zemnieka on February 02, 2018, 05:35:38 PM
I plan to purchase coins and tokens from projects less than 3 months old and I need to store them somewhere.

No, Trezor caters to some coins but not all. If you bought a Trezor and a Ledger Nano S you'd have a lot of the mainstream coins covered.

Coins supported by Trezor: (https://www.cryptocompare.com/wallets/trezor-wallet/)
  • Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Bitcoin Gold
  • Litecoin
  • Namecoin
  • Doge
  • Dash
  • Zcash
  • Ether
  • Ethereum Classic
  • ERC20 (which covers a lot of alt coins, but not all)

Coins supported by Ledger Nano S: (https://www.cryptocompare.com/wallets/ledger-wallet/)
  • Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Ripple
  • Litecoin
  • Zcash
  • Strat
  • Ether
  • Doge

Ledger supports more coins than trezor. Here's a full list: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/cryptocurrencies

As for trezor you can see the full list here: https://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-faq/overview.html#which-coins-are-currently-supported

Also all ERC20 tokens are supported for both but you have to use https://www.myetherwallet.com/

hey,

a trezor + nano ledger s are the top hardware wallets to go.

all the compatible coins have been posted already in this post before.

most of the new projects are ICOs or erc-20 tokens I guess. you can store them at mytherwallet (MEW) and open MEW through e.g. ledger. - this is the safest way to go.

I wrote a comparison on both products and characterized them in detail: https://bitcoincashback.net/Blog/trezor-vs-ledger-review.html

we also have a "how to get started guide" at our website which describes all basics you need to do at the beginning.

lots of success!

I did not know Trezor and Nano supports only a hand full of coins. The coin I will purchase are relatively new and are not ERC-20 tokens.

So, my best bet with them would be to download the coin wallet and store on a computer?

exactly, when neither ledger nor trezor supports this new coin, then you should go for the wallet they uploaded (probably on their github/website).

make sure to create a safe password for your client and print it as a paper wallet too.

i would be careful of just downloading wallets from new coins. some coins and wallets are pretty shady and its possible a wallet can compromise your machine, letting them steal not only those coins, but coins from other wallets on that machine. not to mention any other stuff on the computer.

best bet for unvetted coin wallets is run each in its own virtual machine. that way they shouldnt be able to mess with the other wallets in others VMs if they turn out to be malevolent.

you might want to open a new thread for each coin and ask what wallets are best for that coin.
