Title: Aluminum Stackable Open Miner Frame
Post by: lordtangent on September 05, 2013, 06:56:51 AM
Scrypt-coiners!

I've devised an efficient open miner frame design and I'm trying to gauge if there is interest in a kit. It's sized so that it can comfortably hold up to 6 GPUs while still maintaining double spacing between each GPU. (fewer GPUs allows for more generous spacing) It's designed around the dimensions of a 20" house fan and two frames can be stacked to fit perfectly in front of a 20" fan.

If I were to provide a kit for this, would anyone want one?

I could offer it in two levels of completion. The basic (cheaper version) would only have the cut tubes, fittings and hardware with center punched marks for where the holes go. With this option you would use self tapping screws to hold on the GPUs and "tap" the holes for the motherboard stand off yourself with a regular steel computer case screw.  I'm still developing a simpler stand off system that uses either plastic standoffs or spacers and self tapping screws. But regardless of the final form of the basic kit, the user would do the last part of the work.

I might also offer a fully drilled and tapped version for people who would rather just pay for the extra work to be done.

Here are some photos.

I think you're in the wrong place. GPUs have no place in bitcoin mining any more. Try posting this in the altcoin forum section.

Looks like the mods moved it to the correct part of the forum.

I'm still working out the exact pricing but this is the ball park.

Simple kit ~$70 + S&H

"Drilled and Tapped" kit ~$90 + S&H

LTC or BTC  accepted of course.

Keep in mind, my design is still Pre-production. If you want one tomorrow, that's not going to be possible. I would need 2-3 weeks lead time from now.

I'm trying to gauge demand to get an idea of how many resources to put behind it.  Once in production the whole picture changes. (I would have posted in the commerce section with a price tag if this was ready to sell this instant!)

The lead time at this point is more a factor of not having inventory rather than fabrication time. The pictures are of prototypes I built to prove my CAD design.

Once I go into actual production I would always have some amount of inventory on hand so I could ship them right out as orders came in.

@ckolivas I guess you could use these to hold BFL Monarchs when they ship in two years. But this wasn't conceived for Bitcoin miners so you are right.

If you are still doing this I am ready to buy a $90 one. PM me if you can sell. I can pay with BTC/LTC

I'm looking at building a new rig, and this may be what I need. I'll be watching with interest. I'm in the UK, though, so will need to know what the shipping costs would be.

The fully built and drilled unit is what I'd want if I were to buy one. Not sure yet, but interested.

Very nice indeed. Do you have the production of these up and running?

it would be nice if someone posted the dimensions of the tubes, that way ppl could just go to their local hardware store and have them made.

Price point seems a bit off, but I do like the layout better when compared to openrigs.com @ $60 USD. What about selling the plans instead? I know one can pick up the tube aluminum at home depot, its the connectors I am having difficulty sourcing.

Cheers!

We tried smaller versions, but when you reduce the space between the cards significantly you may as well not even bother. The heat map at 6cm (back to front spacing between cards) is horrible compared to 8cm. The whole point of an open frame is to let the heat disperse naturally and evenly. When we have some time we'll be put up thermal imaging (FLIR) photos of rigs running at different space points to demonstrate the heat dispersion at more compact intervals, but trust me when I say that more compact is non-optimal:)

Each rig weighs in at around 5kgs - 5.5kgs, plus packaging material and so on. But volumetrically, our custom boxes are 14.5kgs. Shipping internationally is expensive when it is a parcel that big volumetrically and that heavy:)
