Got my Sapphire 5830 Xtreme yesterday and I've been steadily ramping it up to its eventual failure @ 1020mhz core. I've found it's stable at 1010mhz core with memory underclocked to 300mhz. This is all at stock voltage, and frankly I couldn't be happier with what this card turned out to be capable of.

313.5Mh/s @ 1010mhz core 300mhz memory stock voltage -k phatk VECTORS BFI_INT AGGRESSION=12 FASTLOOP=false WORKSIZE=256 (in regards to 128 vs 256, for me at these settings the 256 worksize actually bumps my hash rate 5Mh/s)

UPDATE: My card now steadily cranks out 331Mh/s @ 1025mhz core with 360mhz mem, 1.180 voltage. Updating the phatk kernel is key to maxing out hash rate, going to the current version bumped me up a solid 10Mh/s, not bad for simply updating phatk.

i've been running mine ~325-330 for close to 24 hours, but i'm lowering it to 1015/300 @ stock voltage since it's running a bit hot. still get 322Mh/s though. :P

it's a pretty nice card to overclock.

25%+ past stock is not something i get from every gpu!

I have one that will hash at 1100MHz with added voltage, which cranked out over 350mhash/s with memory, OS, and software tweaking, but I decided I'd better put it back to it's Furmark-approved 1075MHz @ stock volts after I woke up to discover a crashed computer and several missed pool rounds. I have another one that can barely make it past 950.

It's interesting that they mine so well, since Crysis 2 will destroy these 5870-rejects.

PS. 5830's get the best hash rates at 350-360MHz memory with worksize 256.

I got a few of these but haven't been able to get anywhere because of json-rpc.org being down. Arghhh.

hmm, that's weird, mine performs better at 128.

spewing 342 mh/s @ 1075/300, bumped the voltage to 1.17...not quite stable.
oh well.

My only issue so far has been adding voltage - when I move the slider in TRIXX then hit APPLY, all it does is go back to 1163. Are these particular cards locked?

Whats the card temp and ambient temp?

Ambient is 30C. Card idles @ 40C, full load @ 70C

that's pretty good for a 5830. but I got mine to 370 on stock clocks.

Just ordered a 6950... can't wait for it to arrive..

I had the same experience and the impression that they didn't have voltage controller hardware on them. However, after several incidental driver removals and reinstallations, it magically started working! I know it is actually working because a card overvolted and overclocked to new levels will crash pretty quick if you remove its volts. I am using the full Catalyst driver package 11.6 with the included SDK 2.4, and the latest version of Trixx for Sapphire (a new version of Trixx just came out that supports independent overclocking of multiple GPUs too). I would try a complete ATI driver removal and reinstallation - just run the original installation package and pick "remove all ATI drivers".

I gotta visit my mining rig tomorrow and try some of these settings. Far too amazing. I think I'm totally underutilizing my mining capabilities. Probably only averaging 240 MH/sec.

Unless you have your case opened up with a high CFM fan blowing right on your card, or you're water/oilcooled, I call BS on your 70*C full load @ 1010Mhz....

I am not impressed with my Sapphire Xtreme at all when it comes to temps and how loud the fan is even at 70%.  Also, this is my second one.  I returned the first one because I said it ran too hot, but this new one is the same.  I run at 925Mhz and temps run in the low-mid 70's.  And that's with a Coolermaster CM690 case with six 140mm fans running.  If I run at 950Mhz I get 74-77*C but the fan gets too annoying and I'm trying to not kill this card.

My ASUS 5830 DirectCU run MUCH cooler, and the fan is MUCH quieter.  Clocked at 975Mhz, the ASUS runs at 70*C with 60% fan.

I'm currently on the lookout for another ASUS to crossfire instead of the Sapphire Xtreme.  Then I can throw the Saphhire Xtreme in my rig in the basement so I don't have to hear it or worry about temps...

I do have a room fan blowing at the case, but the case is closed up and the fan is across the room. However, the fan is right infront of the AC duct so its circulating the cold air that way. But yeah, I have the GPU fan stuck at 90% and remember the Xtremes have upgraded HSFs.

The ASUS DirectCU setup looks awesome. If I had my choice of any 5830, it would have been that one hands down.

I have 5 5830s running in my basement, with no additional "high CFM fans" blowing on them.  All are running at 69-70C @ 1010/250 stock voltage. No cases.  all open.
Ambient in the basement is about 20C.

Parts in bold and underlined was my point.  Not a regular setup.  Myself, I don't set any special conditions to my computers.  They sit in my house in my living areas.  You must have a chilly basement.

Anyone else having trouble getting 4 over 900? If i move anything past that it freezes the whole system. i have AC blowing directly on the board and cards.

What program are you using to get past the stock 900mhz? Are you on windows or linux?

It may be a similar issue that I had.... check your task manager while starting the miners.  Mine were killing my CPU, I had to set the affinity on all phoenix processes to the same CPU core so it wouldn't eat 100% and crash the computer.

Either you are looking at the hash rate your pool says you have, or you made a typo, or you are spouting BS

Man you guys make me want to crank it up on my 5830. I get 225 on stock and 270 when I push it to 900Mhz via CCC. Tried MSi AfterBurner but what annoyed me about that is you need to keep moving the slider down and then saving then repeating that step to get the memory down to 300Mhz. It also gave me my first set of blue screens even though I never pushed it so much. TRIXX is way better as I can move the sliders in one go to all the extremes and then revert back when i am using the system for regular stuff (but still mining at stock!) Now all I need is the courage to do it!

Trixx is the way to go.  The fastest I run my cards is at night.  Now doing GPU@985Mhz and Mem@325Mhz.  Each card running 295-305MH/s.

Crossfired:
Sapphire Xtreme : 75-76*C
ASUS DirectCU    : 70-71*C

Total 610MH/s.

Seems Mem@325-345Mhz is best.  Still looking for the right spot.

I'm using Sapphire's own TRIXX software on Windows Vista x64. Nothing fancy at all, just download and install from their website. Only thing I'm limited to is stock voltage, for whatever reason it won't let me bump up the volts. If I set it to anything higher than stock 1163, once I hit reply it automatically reverts back to 1163, regardless of what I set the voltage to.

Try between 350-360. I was told that this was the sweet spot for this particular card when overclocked. Personally, 360 is my sweet spot.

Yeah tried TRIXX last night - managed to get to 301 Mhashs on 950Mhz/300MHz on my XFX card which was sweet!

When I close down TRIXX and re-open the app, I notice that the memory now shows 300Mhz as the highest value and allows me to down clock it to 0! Is there a value below 300MHz that is good or should we not go below 300?

What a great unit. Fits in a 5.25" bay as an independent unit to power your graphics cards.

Doesn't it feel great to pass up that 300Mh/s mark?? You can just feel the overwhelming value oozing from the 5830 GPU.

TRIXX did the same thing for my memory clock, and while I haven't tried going below 300, I've always read the sweet spot for mem clock is around 350-360. 360 happened to be the right number for me, but you'll have to play around in that range to find yours.

My 5870 only puts out 320 ish.  Its dropped since I added an old card in my second slot.  Not sure why.

What kind of card did you add to the second slot? Also, what kind of power supply are you running this system with? The more you can tell us about your setup, the more likely it is that we can help you figure this out. If it's drawing system resources, the second card may or may not be infringing on your 5870's demand.

Feels really great! I've been wanting to push the card higher than what CCC would allow so was eager to try AfterBurner - but that caused so many blue screens, it just annoyed me and made me give up. The look, feel and simplicity of TRIXX makes overclocking a breeze, and now I am not scared to push my card further! The AfterBurner interface for me was just too much and clearly the fact that it made me blue screen when i never pushed it anywhere close to what I am pushing the card with TRIXX makes me think that it has some technical issues.

I only wish I had bought a 2nd 5830 at the time I got my current one so I could crossfire. They were going for a steal and I only discovered Bitcoin a few weeks after they sold out =/

It is a bit strange becaues I can run the first card (Device0) only at about 970 core and 300mhz Memory but the Second one on over 1020 Core 300Memory stable

Im using Ubuntu 11.04 and all over ssh, when a card fails mostly phoenix hangs up but the other card continue hashing

i've tried setting aggression on device 0 lower (8) but it didnt help much

When i set aggression over 10 on any card and want to stop hashing (by killing the screen sessions for that gpu) it freezes the whole machine sometimes.

my best worksize settings have been for windows 128 and for linux 256

When i get to the machine the next time i will change the positions of the two 5830 to find out if I have the problem with Device0 or with the Card itself

But all Cards together are hashing at about 1600mhashes wich is fine for me rigth now :) (first 5830 @ 315 (970,300) second @ 335 (1020,300) and the 5870's @ ~460 (990,300)

Yeah, I was able to squeeze 300 Mhash/s @ 970 MHz core with 600 MHz mem from my 5830,
however I'm paying $0.30 per kWh, so basically the card worked just to cover electricity cost...  ;D

I just ordered my second one last night. Not sure where you got yours from, but they're still up on Newegg.

UK i'm afraid! Is it possible to crossfire say a 5830 with a 5850/70 or must they be the same? I'm thinking of getting a new setup with 2 6990s since a friend wants to buy the current setup i have with my 5830, hmm .. decisions decisions!

Just saw they're sold out here as well! I figured they wouldn't last long. You can crossfire any cards with the same 'thousand' and 'hundred' digits, so a 5830 can go with any 58xx card.

If it is for mining you do not need to crossfire.  You can always set up a dummy plug and/or supposedly the new catalyst (have not tried this option).

Where did you find your 6990s?

If you're using the phatk kernel, it was just updated within the last few days and adds a nice ~13Mh/s performance boost. Make sure you update yours!

5830's are great cards... mine's running 296MH/s at 950/300 right now... still tweaking

My two xtremes really overclock well. I don't think I got lucky with them either, because most of what I've heard from other owners goes along the same lines. I get 330mh/s from each regularly and recently maxed out one of them @ 1055mhz doing 345mh/s rock steady at full voltage (1.195v). While I won't be keeping it there, I continue to be impressed with the potential these cards hold. You should run them wide open and see what they give you. I find 1.180v to be the highest I'm comfortable leaving my cards 24/7, and this gets me well above 330mh/s with each, but ymmv.

mine crash after 1000 mhz

I can get mine up to 1020 and anything past that gets unstable.  I am getting 324mh though.  If i could get one that would hit over 1050 I would be thrilled!

Yeah these cards seem to be hit or miss with what you can push them to.  I can only push my card to 975mhz/300 memory before it starts crashing but my friend can push his card to 1030mhz/300 memory.

You three who mention your card's instability haven't said whether or not you experienced a crash at stock voltage or with your GPU overvolted. My GPU tops out around 1015mhz stable at stock volts, but as I mentioned, 1.180v gets me up to 1040mhz and maxing out at 1.195v is 1055mhz. Give your cards a little extra juice and see how much improvement you get in terms of max stable GPU clock.
