This just proves how ridiculously stupid people are. I can honestly not even believe what I am seeing here. FUCK PEOPLE ARE DUMB.

Wow. I didn't know a person under 30 could be that computer-illiterate.

The funniest part for me was the end. After they spend all that time slamming Ubuntu, the resolution lies in explaining to her that Ubuntu will actually do everything she needs it to do.

Can anybody living the US explain what exactly is that Verizon CD supposed to do? I thought those connection setup CD's were only used back in the dial up and early PPTP/ATM days?

Also, doesn't Ubuntu ship with a newer version of OpenOffice and not that 2.7 in the video? :D

All the cd does is set up the settings on your system and instal bloatware/spyware, in reality shes too retarded to set it up herself.

Really odd though, I would assume the Ubuntu installation would be using DHCP by default unless she too dumb to even select a network to connect to (if using wireless, no password since I doubt she would known enough to set up encryption), or connect the network cable... :o

I would imagine most of the problems she is having is having a router that is not configured properly. so it probably is not even Ubuntu or even the laptops fault.

She is probably the type that allows all her neighbors to download kiddy porn through her connection.

Here's what I see.

She relies on the magic software included on that CD to help "configure" her internet settings to automatically associate her computer's WiFi connection to her router.

What she doesn't realize (and is probably too computer-illiterate to realize) is that she just needs to click on the WiFi bars at the top, select her SSID and type in the fucking password. This is a problem that could have been solved in less than 10 minutes by calling a tech-savvy relative or mother fucking tech support.

As for the rest of it: Some college sites' student resources are anal about using IE, but Firefox is becoming far more accepted. And OpenOffice and Office are practically the same thing.

Well in her defense, she looks like she's doing some kind of arts or history course, so probably can't blame her for not being computer literate, although in today's world at her age it would be somewhat incredible and maybe criminal (for laziness).

IE9/10 seems to be stemming the change a bit and Chrome is also becoming increasingly popular. The latest "tick-tock strategy" by Mozilla is starting to annoy me despite being a long time Firefox (Netscape even) supporter.

And for what it's worth, OpenOffice has been forked out to Libre Office because Oracle was being an ass about things. I'm starting to get really nervous about depending on MySQL after seeing them mess around with Java and OpenOffice.

yes, i think oracle is screwing or should i say fucking things up. id imagine it would be difficult to switch from mysql because so many applications use it in a non modular way.

Yeah, too many apps are tied intimately to MySQL as it is. But internally I've been recommending that we start working on the postgresql part of our own db layer that never got coded because MySQL was working just too well :D
