Title: Anyone got any insight as to why Thailand made Bitcoin illegal?
Post by: ech0 on September 07, 2013, 07:50:49 PM
Did they see it as a threat to their banking system or was it because the community stole their currency symbol lol ... Just can't wrap my head around why they would deem such innovation illegal.

Bitcoin is NOT illegal in Thailand.  That news story was incorrect yet widely published.

Some Thai exchange made a statement saying they got together with Thai central bankers and they were told to stay out of it for the time being. Whole story about Bitcoin being illegal in Thailand is based on that.

That was an undocumented meeting which Bank of Thailand didn't confirm even happened. Even if it did happen there's no law in Thailand forbidding Bitcoin. There are still Thai Bitcoin exchanges operating there without a problem.

It's a sad story of reporters not double checking the facts before making sensationalist headlines. It's even sadder as it made news headlines on Bitcoin Magazine and other such Bitcoin information channels.
