It highly depends on who you are asking to
But surely between 10,000 and 1M

It also depends on who you count as active user - as for the number of active nodes, have a look at the Bitcoin Map wiki page (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_Map) to get an idea. The forum stats (https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?action=stats) might give you an indication as well. The leaked Mt. Gox account list had slightly over 60.000 entries back then. So, make your guess...

My personal estimation would be somewhat around 200.000 "active users" (for some "reasonable" definition of "active users" ;))

The MtGox leaks showed about 60 thousand accounts. Some of those were probably inactive or duplicates, so the real number of users is likely to be less. Now, Gox is the largest exchange outhere, so even assuming there's a percentage of users that use only other exchanges and people that use no exchanges at all, even the most generous estimates take you around the 100 thousand users mark. So I would think that's the estimate of people using Bitcoin. Some would say it's too small for it to take off. I like to call it "room to grow" :P.

This shows how many connected nodes there are to Bitcoin since December. The first date displayed is December 18, 2010, and the last date displayed here is July 12, 2011. I used the data from http://dump.bitcoin.it/misc, and counted the number of occurrences for Status:"Up" for each day. As you can see, Bitcoin is not dying.

A node is someone running the Bitcoin client. It does not count someone who is only mining.
