Title: Merit Sources
Post by: Wheelige on February 09, 2018, 04:25:38 AM
I can get behind the new merit system. I think I've seen an increase in quality of posts, except for the many posts complaining about how the merit system is bad. I don't think its 100% but its doing its job so thats cool with me. (please dont take this as another post complaining about lack of merit)

I'm interested to know if the 'merit sources' are publicly available knowledge or if they are kept secret to avoid merit begging? I think there are arguments for either side. My understanding is that higher ranks were allocated more Smerit at creation so to a degree the cats out of the bag however I have seen little evidence of begging to high ranked members so maybe not. I imagine that it would be a different situation for the fountains of merit as there is no finite supply for them.

Anyway, if there is a list it would be interesting to know.
If not, no harm.

Interested in opinions on whether on not there should be a public face to the top of the trickle down merit. Discuss.

Yes to both.

You'll eventually be able to detect merit sources from here:

Merit Social Hacking 101

1) Target Meta & Beginner Boards
2) Try to be the first person to respond to a decent post/question
3) If 1 & 2 don't pan out, attempt something comical
4) Add images if you are able or lots of links; if they are useful even better
5) Create 1-2 Topics in random boards daily that are solid questions relative to current market conditions
6) Be grandfathered into Merit points

Here's the response to your question from our Dear Leader...

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

I don't think I'd want to know who the exact sources are but I'd like to know where they are distributed. At one point Theymos mentioned that he could envision assigning merit sources by board so there is a focus on different boards. Cruising around the forum over the last few weeks indicates that the Moderators are not participating in giving merit in each board...which is unfortunate.

What we've saved in spam we've gained in redirecting traffic to the boards that have more merit givers, i.e., Meta.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score...
With this simple statement, theymos made the Meta board cool again.

Wait, has Meta ever been cool?

The merit sources are not just moderators. From the initial ~35 sources the number quickly increased to 57 but has stopped there for some time. Which boards do you feel are underrepresented and is there anyone you could nominate to redress that?

I don't see that as a bad thing. This is a huge change to the forum so the fact the people who maybe previously didn't care much for what happened are now involved in discussing it on Meta is progress of sorts.

Or in summary of 1-5: Use the forum as a place to discuss relevant topics and interact with other members. Number 6: Be annoyed I didn't get here earlier.

This gets you onto my ignore list, so no sMerits for you if you do this.

How'd you think if we go to Off-topic/Politic and start writing we love God and hate abortion would we earn some merit from local nutjobs?  ;D

I am a newbie in the cryptocurrency scene so I really do not have a lot to share.
That is already a disadvantage - I cannot create a good thread.

So the Off-Topic section is my present home. And I don't get merits from creating good comments.
In reality, people are lazy applauding others. So What can we do to rank up?

Get involved and learn about Bitcoin, you're not likely to do that in Off-topic. This is a Bitcoin forum so people are likely to appreciate your posts if you're making an effort to get involved in what this is all about.

I posted this before, but I want to repeat it.

I really hope Theymos is staggering the sMerit source refresh dates.  If everyone gets the sMerit on the same day, you'll see a flurry of posts and merit given, then it will be quiet for the rest of the month.

You can bug me all you want after 20 days from now, I will send 5 merits, I have nothing to hide.

So i looked at the picture and followed the link. Seems i have quite a bunch, but with no regard where they generated from? So we are smerit sources, are we special? or it was just a gift from new beginning, and we will later starve of them or something.

Snipped by a beggar a.k.a myself.

We are special, I'm a merit source and you are a merit beggar, both are special in a way. you should know everything about merits, your future salary depends on them.
Are you excited about having no salary after a few months? I am. you gave me a merit, as a merit source, I like that attitude, keep them coming, I will consider ranking you up to a hero member in 5 years with my 5 sMerits monthly.

AFAIK you get sMerit back 30 days after it's spent, not a hard refresh. I guess when the system was introduced, more people tried giving merits at the start, so we'll see a bit more merit given, but not a huge amount like you're describing.

Watch out for that, because I've read hilariousandco's opinion of members who only post in that section--so if you screw up you're not going to get any sympathy from a mod like him.

I suspect you might have more to say in sections like meta, where people basically just bitch about merit, trust, and sections like reputation where it's a huge gossipy shit show.  Keep reading and eventually you'll have an opinion worth sharing in bitcoin discussion, though right now it's pretty spam-infested and is probably best avoided.  You already got some merit, which is more than a lot of other people of your rank have done.

It really isn't easy to get merit, but as I've stated before that's exactly how it's supposed to be.  Ideally the shitposters will get discouraged and go away and for the rest, they'll up the quality of posts considerably.

And I'm always reading the same merit shit system it could be much joyful if I read something new, no wonder I'm in meta section, what to expect.

Most of the person complaining about merit has a laconic statement that lead oneself to dismay community.

P.S it is like everyone has been experiencing a loop here. as an average joe could I demand to read a different story about merit?

Don't make lazy shitposts in off topic. This is a bitcoin forum so not sure why you're here if off topic is your 'home'. The whole point of the merit system is to stop people like you who don't really contribute something.

He can spam away. With the merit system these shitposters will soon realise they're going nowhere.
