Title: Secure email services??
Post by: de704 on September 09, 2013, 01:38:26 PM
I heard today to the TV that the "N$ A" normally hacks into Gmail. Does anyone know of any good secure email services?

I probably need to check out the bit message thing too.

Thanks

secure-mail.biz shut down in November 2012.

Several months later it suddenly re-opened our of nowhere. No one knows if this was done by the original guys or someone else. My money is on: "It's the NSA"

Something like https://gpgtools.org/index.html with your own open source mail server and computer?

Right now it is a crapshoot about what is secure and what is not.  Between certificate authorities being compromised so you don't know if you are being MITMed, backdoors in MS software (and potentially Mac OS X), Blackberry, iOS, Android (plus either intentionally crippled or stupidly designed PRNGs), Tor issues, and the like, you have everything to worry about if you really need something that is secure.

As far as a random (ha ha) web site, you don't know who is really behind it (as stated above by GreyHawk and NP some web sites in particular).  In the past you might have thought that big companies (Google, Apple, RIM, MS, IBM etc) would stand up for privacy, but in reality none of them have been doing so as of now from what has been published.  Or at worst, they've used poor security practices or allowed working groups to be derailed so that the standards can be more easily corrupted.

Silent Circle (https://silentcircle.com/)
Actually much more than just email from Phil Zimmerman
mail.i2p (http://www.i2p2.de/techintro.html)
Relatively safe due to the nature of i2p, but still requires GPG...

FYI, Silent Circle no longer offers secure email services. The reason being, since Lavabit, another secure email service, was "shut down," they do not see a way to keep user's emails private. You can read the explanation on their web site, but basically Lavabit closure set a bad precedent. They closed following requests from a govt agency. Also, Silent Circle cites the fundamental un-private nature of email as another reason (having to do with the headers and sent and received email addresses are always visible).

IMO, Bitmessage is the best way to go right now.

Take a look at http://prxbx.com/email/

I came here just to say this.

If anyone cares about security/privacy, they'll ignore posts like this:

Don't be ignorant.

Anything to backup your claim? It seems to be good enough for http://www.prism-break.org (http://www.prism-break.org), why not?

This is the only way to be secure i suppose. Setup a server in your home and have it act as a mail server, problem solved. You need to get a domain and a non dynamic IP  :)

But still, if the email is sent in plain text, it can still be read before it arrives...

I did some research after my government decided that the providers have one year the time to change their infrastructure so they can log following things:
- which websites you visit
- when you visit them
- who you mailed
- when you mailed
- from who you got a mail
- which hardware you used
- where you used it (when you get a call on your mobile phone, they will log the location)
- who you called
- who called you
- length of the conversation
- they log calls from landlines, mobile phones and services like skype

All these logs can be viewed by the government, police, even the institute for post and telecommunication,...  :-\
And they work together with the NSA, so I guess they will happily share everything with them too.

So in my search for a good mail provider I ended up with these 2:
www.countermail.com
riseup.net

The first one you can pay with bitcoins, and the second one accepts Bitcoin donations.

But like some pointed out, you can't be 100% sure that your privacy is safe.  :(
But imo better try than just give it to them.

http://prxbx.com/email/ (http://prxbx.com/email/) is a good start, I use Riseup but you need to bear in mind that a lot of activists have accounts with them so they're much more likely to be under surveillance (plus their servers got raided a while back). Encrypt everything you want to keep private.
