Title: Can ASIC's be used with Vanity Gen?
Post by: crazy_rabbit on September 11, 2013, 12:43:00 PM
Something occurred to me, I'll soon have some USB Block Eruptors on hand (A piece of history!) and I was curious if they could be used with Vanity Gen. It would be worthwhile is ASIC's could be used to generator Vanity addresses.

You can use the BTC mined with ASIC to pay other people doing vanitygen for you

Good answer. Except of course, they are block eruptors, so I won't be generating any BTC with them anymore. :-)

Why? Has the algorithm to mine changed in BTC or are they broken?

If they still mine at ~300 MH/s, you can still over time generate some BTC with them in a pool...

ASIC = Application Specific Integrated Circuit

The application of block header hashing is not even remotely similar to the application of EC point multiplication.

So, while the literal answer to your question is that yes, you can use ASICs for vanity address searching, the answer that you are really looking for is that no, the specific ASICs you already have are not suitable.
