I am trying to built the 'base' of my rig and i run into some questions that i cant find an answer.

I am planning to built a total of 6 x 1070s mining rig. I will try to start with 3 and then add more if i find a good price for the cards.

I am trying to select a psu that will hande 3 gpus and i am bit confused about how to select it.

I have come across to a reasonable priced seasonic psu:

Does that psu hase enough pcie slots to power 3 gpus? My understanding is that this psu has 2x PCIe 8pin and 6x PCIe 6pin  so i can connect up to 2 1070s gpus (i think they require 8 pins). Is that correct? Cant i connect a 3rd gpu somehow?

Moreover the risers will be connected to the 6 pins so it has enough slots?

Finally is my base rig ok for future upgrades (6 cards) or compatibilty with future nvidia or amd cards?

Read the review, it says it has 3 power cable to PCI-E 6+2. so yes, it should power the 3GPU.




Yes, also if it has 6 pin splitters connected to your GPU can power up the riser, so you save an extra cables.


You need to underclock your 6 1070 later on for 850w, If you plan to have AMD's I guess its safer to have at least 1kw of PSU rating.

Where should i connect the 3rd cable on the psu?  Isnt the 6 pin pci-e on the psu underpowered for the gpu?

So from my understanding i will use

GPUS(3xgtx1070)

8 pin connector from PSU to GPU using power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section
8 pin connector from PSU to GPU using power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section
6 pin connector from PSU to GPU using an 8 pin PCI Express power with detachable 2 pin section
 
Risers
3 risers connected to psu using 8 pin PCI Express power with detachable 2 pin section

If your risers has 6 pin connector, then this is barely enough to power up your 3GPU and risers, I've seen the actual pictures and it is indeed splits, 3 cables with 2x 8pin(6+2).

So what you recommnend?

well, I'd recommend to check some Corsair models, in fact they might be even cheaper then Seasonic , but has the same features and endurance limits
personally I have 1KW from Corsair and quite a lot of miners choosing it, cause it really bulletproof quality and has long warranty, by the way
so, imo, you may consider it as well

Just get the corsair ax 1500i

Its expensive and because i dont have 6 cards now i will just buy one that will support the first 3 and then upgrade from there.
Should i look for min 3 x pcie 8 pins connectors?

Between the longevity and the higher efficiency you will save money in the long run.

Or if you want to save a few bucks you can mod a server psu.

If this is the case then I guess your chosen PSU should be fine, you can again buy the same PSU specs like the 1st one for another 3 GPU upgrade later on and buy add2psu cables. or simply use the Jumper style ;)
