I also read it in news this morning and i think it is a great news for those who are involved in cryptos, especially when at a time there is a lot of rumors trying to paint a bad pictures about cryptocurrencies. We need more of those news to clear the air and move forward.

wow. It is very cool
pay an athlete to use cryptocurency, as long as there is approval from the athlete it is legitimate only
and this is also a new way to introduce bitcoin, through sports. to the world
and who knows, this trend will be followed by everyone later, if there is a race. and bitcoin as a gift. I think it will be very exciting  ;D

The only news here is the fact that somehow this guy acccepted a shitcoin as payment.

I mean, he's getting paid with a shitcoin that no one has ever heard of, a coin that's been in a downtrend for over a month and has low volume, and while it saw a small spike in the price when the news was published, it seems like people quickly realized that 'onG.social' is nothing more than another vaporware. Chances are this coin is going to disappear before the sponsorship deal with the athlete is over.

Yep and they simply use Olympics to market their future products. You can't blame them for doing that and I guess they prob paid some part in fiat as well. I myself wouldn't accept some big payments in some shitcoins specially if I couldn't turn them into more valid coins with speed.

It's really cool that crypto-currencies are at this level. I already heard earlier that the football club of London Arsenal advertises some kind of project ICO. I suppose that there will be more such advertisements, both in sports and in other industries.

Such cooperation becomes an advertisement to introduce the world of cryptocurrency to everyone in the world because with the cooperation of athletes and sponsors can make people curious and try to jump into the world of cryptocurrency to invest or trade. This is also good news to influence bitcoin prices in the market.

from what I read he is "The double world record". this may increase even more the exposure of cryptos, I liked how he replied:

Quote
"For me, the real risk of not getting anything is not there, because I got a little (cash) out of it already.

"And that combination makes this sponsorship really fun, right. Because we're going to help each other. I'm trying to get them a little more exposure to make them succeed, and that would help all of us, right."

this can be good marketing and I hope more athletes are interested in bitcoin and altcoins. as in this world the tendency of human beings is imitate other people. will have more chances of more athletes to get interested in altcoins and bitcoins

Didn't see what the coin was though.

it seems that is ONG Social

This is cool, but with such a non-stability of the price of the crypto currency, I think it is not profitable for them to receive it. Today, one price, and tomorrow woke up less than 2 times. :o

Wow, its good to hear about that. He became the first athlete to be paid in crypto. I think that is because he is under the sponsorship of ONG Social. However, that could be a good news at the end, even though the crypto couldn't be at high price at the moment. I hope other athletes follow the steps done by  Ted-Jan Bloemen. And the crypto sponsorship should be widen up to cross online game competition.

It is good to see someone gets paid in crypto currency, but by looking at the heading i really thought the athlete is getting paid by bitcoin,it is really hard to get sponsors for winter Olympic athletes and he is getting paid in some new tokens,it is good for him as he is the first athlete to get in that coin, either way it is a good start and hopefully we will see more.

Reading the news is a good one though because to a large extent, its bringing some level of publicity to crypto community but its still not addressing the bone of contention and not going to be any different from the series of celebrities that have come out to declare support for one crypto currency or the other.

The publicity he is trying to garner is already there and his actions to me is more selfish because whether the results come or not, he is already taken care of. What really matters that people are interested in is the security of their funds and the guarantee that they won't wake up tomorrow to realize that their entire wealth has gone. Until then, every form or celebrity campaigns are just cosmetic approaches.

I think events when someone, that is present in media, use Bitcoin or cryptocurrency for their business is very important.

Rapper 50 cent did something similar in 2014 and back than it didn't matter that much. But fast forward to 2018 the same news is well received.
Of course the price is more serious now, but still its a great breakthrough.

Ok, I do not want to be a downer here, but what happens if this athlete gets his payment in Crypto and this coin drops to

zero. Looks like this is not payment in Bitcoin, so the chance is high that this might fail. We do not want the media to report

that a world class athlete got paid say $100 000 at the time and after a year, when he cashed out..... the value dropped to

$100.  ::)

Wow, I didn't expect that. I think some of them athletes have already set their eyes on the cryptocurrency market, at least those who have signed up with getting paid through cryptocurrencies. However, as I know, that may be an incentive from their government because athletes join the Olympics  to represent their countries are actually not getting paid for it. So having read that they accept cryptos as payment, then that means whatever country they are coming from, is showing their support on embracing the market, which is an even better news.

That would be great; however, they are pricey to even be considered. I think that the so called payment they are getting is also a means of promotion for whatever developer or company is backing those coins. By getting their coins in the hands of those athletes, which are known world-wide, it could give them great traction to promote their coins and have more people talk about it, and hopefully, invest in it as well. I don't think the athletes are giving too much attention with that because I would think that they don't bother themselves with the cryptomarket, in general.

Soon I think many companies and not only will accept bitcoin as a payment method because more and more people are using it and would like to pay with cryptocurrencies

That could be a good start to a more far-reaching cryptocurrency activity. Having read that what's given are only low value or not-so-popular coins, I think that the main goal hear is no the investment but the marketing. I think the developers are after the idea that Olympic-level athletes are quite popular with the masses, and therefore, having to know that they have agreed to receiving crytocurrencies, it would give more people the idea that if the famous are getting on the wagon, why not us as well. I think it's a good marketing move.

Well, modern top athletes (and we are talking about the double world record holder here) get most of their income from sponsors, not from regular salaries from their respective clubs. Ted-Jan Bloemen accepted a sponsorship and will get paid in cryptocurrencies. It is an advert, yes - that is the purpose of sponsorship for the sponsors, but also a milestone as this is just the first one. Many will join soon enough, I am sure of it.

He's about to be paid and so, he's not paid yet. And it's not clear what specific coin in the 300 million coins ONG Social has mined Bloemen would receive.

Quote
Canadian speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen recently became the first athlete to be paid in virtual money when he struck a one-year sponsorship deal with ONG Social, a social network and crypto community, and CEEK VR, a developer of virtual reality experiences.

Quote
According to Kgazette.com, ONG Social has mined 300 million coins, worth a total of $138.69 million. The cryptocurrency was founded in June.
Although it's not known how many coins Bloemen stands to receive, he told Canada's National Post that the deal was "a minimum amount in cash, but most in cryptocurrencies."

Its great to find out about that. He turned into the primary competitor to be paid in crypto. I feel that is on account of he is under the sponsorship of ONG Social. Notwithstanding, that could be an uplifting news toward the end, despite the fact that the crypto couldn't be at high cost right now. Even though we don't know what currency they were paid in, being paid in a crypto currency is the most exciting prize. This is great publicity for crypto currencies along with provided the winner with a long term investment opportunity beyond the initial reward.

That's great news for crypto currencies in general, but especially good advertisement for the athlete and the mentioned sponsors. I would also be interested in what crypto currency the athlete got, but this might be revealed at another time.

Good news, today cryptocurrency reached Olympic games industry! :)
Speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen gets paid in cryptocurrency (https://edition.cnn.com/2018/02/10/sport/crypto-speedskater-ted-jan-bloemen-winter-olympics-intl/index.html)

whether this can motivate the sports industry on other branches to adopt cryptourrency?
need an international branch to be able to influence other industries, eg World Cup Soccer. With prizes using cryptocurrency, then adoption on other sports will emerge

This is really interesting because it shows the popularity of cryptocurrency in this present life. I feel that the day that the whole world uses most of the cryptocurrency in transactions and payments has not gone too far. The cryptocurrency market is growing very well over the years and it is a remarkable development of a new market such as cryptocurrency.

Do the athletes know more about cryptocurrency ?, or just know it ?. If indeed the athletes know more about cryptocurrency, I think that race deserves and is quite unique in gift giving. But if the athletes were not very understanding with the crypto, they are given a decent gift shaped ordinary course.

Cryptocurrencies are well adapted in sports and betting industries and Japan who will host this 2020 Olympics are also preparing to introduce the bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. There is no doubt that cryptocurrencies will be adopted to other industry aside from sports , entertainment and music industries as well.

where did you get that news? is there a legit source? if there is then this is probably a good news because this can definetely help and boost the popularity of bitcoin because of the exposure that it will get due to advertising in the olympic event. many countries all over the world will witness it and this may bring confident to them to think that bitcoin is really legit and not a scam. ill be looking forward seing this, for sure this will be an exciting event

I hope our country will be the next of it because our government has a little budget on athlete and sometimes as an athlete you need to provide on your own to pursue your dreams. I experience before that my friend is an athlete that he can't provide shoes on her own to run on a contest, so I've let her borrow my shoes so he can run comfortably. Even though he did not win in that contest I know that someone will see her talent and sponsor him.
