Title: Advice for building a big mining farm
Post by: elissa on February 12, 2018, 07:22:10 PM
Hello guys!

We are planing to build a big mining farm.
For now we have a power of 3000 MHS. We are planing to add 3000 more in ethereum mining rigs and 15 antminers.

The question is:
Do you have any advice about cooling?
For now it is ok, but during summer that might be a problem. Any advice about what kind of building is better to use, what kind of cooling system, etc. would be great!
Thanks!

It is a good question.

About the place, I would suggest a large one, similar to a factory or a storage place.

For cooling...
I think that you have to have a system which takes out the hot air from the top of the room and a system with cool air on the lower part of the room.

I just dont know if its advisable to set up an eth mining farm right now, especially with the new Nvidia chips around the corner, market uncertainty, skyrocketing diff and possible Eth ASICs.

I think you need to reconsider all of this.

What leads you to believe there will be an ETH asic

There's just too much going on right now for anyone to realistically considering a large Eth mining operation. They simply missed the train and will need to choose another path.

Well, if it's a GPU mining farm, it doesn't have to be Eth, right? I mean you could just as easily start mining something else, right?

Then you assure if I invest 100k in rigs I'll not see my ROI ? 100k of rigs on single ETH is around 12kus/month at the current price...

If there will be eth asics then we will switch to other crypto. Anyway, we decided to invest and we think that it is still a good time to do it. We just want to solve the possible issue with the temperature during summer in the cheapest way possible.

I invested 70k in gpus mining 7 months ago and it was the same, peoples told bunch of things(speculation) and now I got my ROI...

For the heat, it's simple, something on the roof to get out the heat and hole at the bottom to get fresh air from outside. You can add AC to reduce temp of your room during summer. It's important to respect ventilation rules.

The thing is thet during summer there might be 35-40 degrees in my country. Do you think that just a good ventilation and a good circuit of the air will help?

I think that just ventilation wouldn't help you. You will also need some air conditioners.

Maybe..
And I guess that not just simple air conditioners but industrial ones.

Same temp for me during summer, it's why you need very good air circulating across your rigs. An AC will be needed if you don't have a big area. Personally, I begin to mine in July in a garage and the cards was running very hot, get out heat is very important specially during summer. You have to think about how you can benefit of your AC, big farms just have good ventilation, what is you environment ?

I have 250 square meters. It is a house in a suburb of a city.

best advice here , gpus are a safe bet you can always sell them if you want out and the waranties are long

You'll need an AC, I don't think an industrial one will be needed but a good one for sure. You'll need to make exhaust and intake, intake at the bottom and exhaust at the top. You can calculate the cubic feet of your area to be able to choose appropriate BTU for AC, CFM for exhaust and square feet for intake.

AC would destroy your earings , intake exhaust is your only option

It depends on the cost of the electricity. But they still have to use AC because otherwise they will destroy their GPUs.

One of my gpu farm is located at my house , i built a shed for that a little over 2 years ago .
During summer times Jun-July-Aug the temp is can get around 100F (38C).
The key for Cooling during the summer time is a airflow , get the hot air out , let the fresh air (filtered)  in , make sure there is no "dead spot" around your gpu rigs . dead spot i mean air flow a must everywhere , around all of your gpus .
My " Home mining cave" have around 100 GPU , RX 470/RX480/RX580 all 8 GB cards and usually 5-6x S9. I Set the temp control (overdriven tool / wattstool in the past) to 80C for the cards during summer , cooilng fans are runing around 55-75% and able to keep gpu/mem temperature under 80C without any Air Condition unit .
I created a great air flow , i have two 18"x34" ( 46cm x 86cm ) opening on one end , with air filters , and on the opposite side of the room there is two 24" Industrial Exhaust Shutter Fan with Var Speed  / 4450CFM (each) pulling the warm air out from the room. The air directed straight to the mining rigs with Foam Board Insulation panels (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Insulfoam-Common-2-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-2-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-R7-7-Faced-Polystyrene-Garage-Door-Foam-Board-Insulation/3014190)

Hello,we using big industrial fans, one of this blows 15000-25000 m3/h, we takes the cold air from the factory premises, and blow out hot air to the street. For example i have a 8 Classic (6gpu each) Mining rigs, on the winter when +5 - +10 enough fan of 800 m3/h, the air conditioner have a less efficiency, but on the summer you don't have a way.You need to cool the air. So it's need to be combined solution.

hello, you can easily do calculations to determine required airflow based upon size of your room/s and watts/btu's of your gpu (close estimate). Talk to an experienced commercial hvac installer in your area. You start with a rough idea of watts, estimate btu's per card, use the internet to find avg and high temps for your area, and then calculate cfm (cubic feet per minute or metric equivalent) you will need to maintain the temps.

maybe more experienced miners will share acceptable temp ranges & settings they run their specific cards at (in mid/large scale operations) during summer? rx 470/480/570/580 would interest me the most, as well as results LONG TERM with older generation r9 290x/gtx 970/etc cards that have been running for a few years at this point- anyone ?? of course ballpark figures would be helpful!

probably the solution can be either with OR without a/c

when considering your location, I would suggest that thermal mass (large concrete slab or concrete/brick building is good) & amount of building insulation (more insulation, takes longer time for building to heat up in the daytime) might provide an advantage as far as regulating temperatures. as well as large filtered intake & exhaust area/s.
