Title: Gimp Letter Writing Campaign
Post by: kiba on January 23, 2011, 06:12:22 AM
Ok, I think we need to find out the email address first. We can use the same template in the EFF campaign.

If you want to send them a wire transfer you contact them on fundraising@gnome.org . So I guess we could use that.

No, we simply want to give them bitcoin...

You could use that to find out if they want the BTC is the point I think he was trying to make.

Contacting their fundraising address if we want to send them money sounds like a good idea.

Exactly. @Kiba have you done this already?

Hmm, I realized that I don't have a suitable letter.

Just FYI, Kiba, Krita looks much more promising to me as a painting and drawing app than Gimp.

Dear the GIMP team,

Members of the bitcoin community appreciate your open source image editing software and the effort of volunteer programmers to making them better.

The community using Bitcoin <https://bitcoin.org> -- a new open-source P2P cryptocurrency system published under the MIT license -- already comprises several hundred enterprises and individuals.

Several members of our community have offered to donate to your foundation, with x bitcoins pledged so far.  In order to accept pledged and future donations, the GIMP team would need to create and publish a Bitcoin address using a local client, or use an online service such as MyBitcoin.

Warmest regards,

Bitcoin community

Here's the letter.

being a member of the GNOME foundation, I've asked several people what they were thinking about accepting Bitcoin donation.

The answer is simple: the people handling the money have limited time. Having to handle a special software (including learning it and regular backup) then convert bitcoin into dollars or euros take time (especially the later). So, they might accept bitcoin if one of the following happens:

- It worths the trouble (like receiving 1000BTC/month worths it. Receiving 3BTC/year don't).

- It is possible to buy plane tickets with BTC (most of the budget of the GNOME foundation is used to buy plane ticket for hackfest).

Quite logical, don't you think?

Dear the GIMP team...

Not sure about the second paragraph, sounds too much like advertising. I would edit it like this:

Not really. They don't need to handle special software, they can just sign up at mybitcoin. They don't need to convert to dollars/euro every week either, they can just forget about it and check back every couple of months to see how much has been donated, and only convert when it's worth the trouble.

It is clear to me that I was too lazy for this project.

I think I should transfer the funds to someone else, but maybe it's better for me to hold the fund?

I think this is a good letter. The fund is 618 BTC and that should be a good amount of money.

I am sending it to fundraising@gnome.org

If it goes well, than I don't have to think about this damn fund anymore.

P.S.

Also, I linked Bitcoin for them to click on.

Apperantly I messed up the Netiquette concerns email.  :-[

Anyway, The Gnome Foundation only handles bank transfer. I'll or someone else in the bitcoin community will have to contact the GIMP developers.

i look forward to the day when every open-source project has a bitcoin donate address...

Try gimp@gnome.org instead.

If nothing happens then just send the coins to someone who already accepts bitcoins to get rid of the hassle. I'd go with Erowid to prevent the Bitcoin address from getting taken down (so far xkcd has gotten more donations and the address isn't even visible on the site).
