Title: Fed up waiting
Post by: iHashFury on September 15, 2013, 12:40:53 PM
Hello

So I ordered a BFL Jalapeno on the 3/27/13 got fed up waiting so I purchased a USB Block Erupter to play with bfgminer. Now the price has dropped on the Erupter and it wont even pay for its self anytime soon.

Where does a newbie go from here?

Would like to setup a diy low power hobby hash farm with a  Cubox-i or raspberry - but what asic should I invest in?

Do not mine if you expect to win money. ::)
Or try crapcoins.

If you just want to mine as hobby (Youll lose money for sure) just keep with your usb miner. As long as youre having fun with it.
You wont be able to purchase anything in the near future that will even pay for itself.

If you mine, it is to make a profit, not losing money

Alot of people said: "Im mining as a hobby"

Most of them probably still "hope" to make profit.

This is why pre-orders are such scams. So many people buying hardware when they can't realistically determine ROI (and generally when they get it, it will not pay for itself barring a new bubble). This BTC economy is fucked up.

You better off mining script coins like litecoin, ftc and other alt coins the difficulty will not rise as much compared to bitcoin.

Ditto this. I highly advise against most/all pre-orders on general principle. ROI is a huge gamble. And many of these companies are just shady, too...

Where does a newbie go from here?

Here's the secret to finding the holy grail of digital currency investment.

First realize that before Google, there was a search engine called AltaVista that dominated the space. It makes sense that other digital currencies will emerge to compete with and eventually surpass bitcoin in terms of popularity. Look at bitcoin as a blue chip rather than a growth stock. Now start researching to find the alt coins with the best chance to compete with bitcoin. Then pick two or three and invest small amounts in each one. Then work your ass off to help the communities build these currencies as you watch your investment grow.

Thanks for the advice.
I have now set-up 3 load balanced pools to merge mine bitcoins and alt coins.

My USB Block Erupter could pay for itself yet!
