Title: X BTC stolen
Post by: Come-from-Beyond on September 17, 2013, 03:32:48 PM
Too many threads titled that X bitcoins are stolen. What is it? An attempt to spread FUD (Bitcoin is unsecure, blah-blah-blah) or housewives have started using Bitcoin intensively?

I'm guessing it's mostly FUD and/or people trying to get free BTC donations.

This story: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=295931.0 for instance, is highly suspect. AlisonZ got her bitcoins "stolen" within 5 days of registration. Plus her story is highly inconsistent.

timeline of AlisonZ's posts:
  • September 14: She announces her "company" is developing an online wallet, and asks for a 7 day, 1.5 BTC loan (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=294195.msg3152978#msg3152978)
  • September 15: She asks for where to invest BTC because she now has 15 BTC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=294593.msg3158274#msg3158274)
  • September 17: She posts that all her 15 BTC were stolen (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=295931.msg3172792#msg3172792)

inconsistencies:
  • why would she ask for a loan when she was to receive 15 BTC by the next day?
  • why would she ask for investment advice when she was announcing a new wallet company the previous day?
  • she was planning for an advanced wallet service, yet she doesn't know what cold storage was (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=295931.msg3172824#msg3172824)
  • "NEW Online wallet solution that is [...] extremely profitable for future users" - WTF?

At least a couple of them are scammers attempting to garner sympathy. Most of them probably need to be moved to tech support or scam accusations at least, not really bitcoin discussion.
