Limited applicability is not going to allow the coin to take of anyway, so considering the effort you have to put into developing the coin as well, why not adopt an already existing coin and use it?

It's the same way Apple has its own app store and Google has it own app store. Basically it's a free world, anybody can create anything.
The hard part is: will people adopt or use it? Will people join or support the network? People do stuff because they benefit from it. One reason this gaming company, Atari, decided to make its own currency is because its in their best interests. If people find it useful, convenient and cheap, the goal is reached and a network is born. Besides, they would want something custom-fitted to their needs and goals.
