Title: How does a Bitcoin have any value?
Post by: GeckoTrader on February 18, 2018, 09:33:42 AM
Bitcoins do not have value as a physical commodity like gold and are not widely accepted as legal tender like dollars.

Rather, Bitcoin appears to have value for the following reasons: It is popular.

In short, people accept and trade in Bitcoin because other people accept and trade in Bitcoin.

anything has value for its utilities. Gold has value not because it is physical but because it has usages. same as anything else.
bitcoin is a decentralized currency and that is its usage and what's giving it value.

Exactly. Call it speculative but in the future, btc price will go up because of ita transactional use. Its very similar to fiat form of money, where we seem to be making a simple thing like paper the most important asset we have.

The dollar has value because of the weight of the USA government is behind it.  But all fiat currencies hyperinflate eventually, history shows that. So basically its built on faith.

Gold has intrinsic value because it can be used for other purposes and its rare.

Bitcoin has more potential value than both because it solves massive problems. Lower transaction fees, decentralization so very little inflation, it can be swapped instantly all over the world, its more secure than regular money, its somewhat anonymous, and yet transparent at the same time, it cuts out middlemen, etc etc etc.  And because it was first, it is the most tested protocol.

Bitcoin value is determent by buy and sell orders people put. They agree on bitcoins value against national currencies. This is exactly the driving force. The more people want to buy and less want to sell price goes up and in reverse it goes down. We as people give it value but for bitcoin to be stable price has to be high to reach the supply and demand and for this we need major adoption. But now it simply have speculative value as there are not many places where you can use bitcoin and if you can use it somewhere they are going to convert it to USD or at least portion to fiat.

I would argue that part of the value of Bitcoin lies in the fact that it can be used to transfer large amounts of money, with relatively low fees.
It's still a lot faster than traditional banking and I'm absolutely positive that there are many people who use Bitcoin just for that.

Also don't discount its utility as a payment method for online payments. It provides a great alternative for credit cards, which some people have no access to.

Bitcoin has its own value since it is used as a medium of exchange and as a store value too. Bitcoin is difficult to define and understand as a whole if we look at Bitcoin it is simple and the value is used same as paper currency. It is also used to exchange goods and services. Bitcoin requires computing power and is controlled by a decentralized network and the money is transferred over the internet. If we understand the mechanism of cryptocurrency we will think it more secure.

Bitcoin is a digital currency where you can use it as a form of payment (only if a certain business allows it) but it can be converted into traditional currency that can be used to pay utilities and other expenses. Just like here in my country, it is legal and it is largely accepted if you use as a payment.

Yes and these opinions are sampled and aggregated through how much we buy and invest in it on the market and these market dynamics whether demand or supply determines how we all value bitcoin at any moment in time and that is its true value.

bitcoin will get more price as the supply will not grow more than 21million pieces.

I beg to disagree what you said that bitcoin has low fees in transfering money. I tried to transfer $100 worth to my other account the the fee is so high. For that one hundred dollars they charge me about 14 dollars which I can say that it is very expensive.

this issue can be addressed in different ways. First, I agree with you, bitcoin is really nothing physical, just a code, and is not a payment system, which is sad, but it is hardly possible because of its instability: it grows, it falls. But on the other hand, we extract the physical from the non-physical or even imaginary, that is, we profit from the same Bitcoin by investments, the growth of which goes into our pocket, when selling their shares! Therefore, I believe that as long as there is a demand for cryptocurrency and the market, people are increasingly interested in this opportunity and prospects, there will be a good profit for Bitcoin holders! In the market everything is bought and sold for Bitcoin, so what to do with Bitcoin, the decision is yours!

Let's say that I create another form of money, I call it Braincoin. You can use money with your brain. The only thing you need to do is to think at what you want to buy and say the price. So you go to a coffee shop that accepts your Braincoin, you just think of your coffee and say "three Braincoins". Very simple, who wouldn't use this form of payment?
Does it have a value? Looking at how you phrased your question, it doesn't, because it's not a commodity and it is not accepted as legal tender like dollars.
From my point of view, it has an immense value, because this revolutionize the whole concept of money and payments. It is clearly better than fiat money.
This is why Bitcoin has value.

Why does gold or the dollar have any value? Because every agrees it has value, that is all it takes. The same goes with digital currencies like Paypal and Skrill, they have value because everyone agrees they have value. Bitcoin has value because it has utility, that utility is both being a store of value, and a medium for the exchange of value.

What is the difference between an decent apple on the tree that nobody wants and expensive apple on the Tokyo market? Some things have their purpose and gain value because of that. And some things are valued because we give them value.
In simple terms Ferrari Berlineta when was new had a price of 300k today you can find unused ones for 900k ( producing stopped in 2017). Yes it is maybe one of the last aspirated w12 Ferrari in the world and maybe there is his value. Is it better than a new model, no, but why he got that value now? Well we gave him that value, because it's becoming increasingly rare as time passes.

That is actually true, bitcoin is also a form of currency which indicates a decentralized system that does have a value in the form of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is also decentralized in the sense that no sector of the government manipulate it. Maybe in some point we think Bitcoin does not have value yet it does have value that is dependent on the movement of its stock on the market.

The value of Bitcoin is derived from the way people want it at the moment, including other factors like the economy.

What you said is confusing to me. You said that the value of bitcoin is derived from the way people want it at the moment. So if that is the case why does the price of bitcoin going low and decreasing? Why not just breaking the all time high everytime?

Bitcoin is a new technology with unique features - it is an irreversible interpretation that transfers these amounts and savings. It's free from censorship and other attacks. It also has the power to confiscate authority (directly or indirectly through inflation). At the beginning (year 2009) Bitcoin had no value, but the above lists became attractive to the people because they did not want mine and offered the first deal for the dollar. So, the first standard was established as such. Then, this was made stronger - more people saw that Bitcoin could be sold - and that Bitcoin applied unique feats to conserve / move / keeping value.

because its "Popular"? no. not so. bitcoin isn't that popular. USD is popular. the GBP is popular. the CYN is popular. Bitcoin has value because of its store of value. it is a social value NOT linked to anything (not even popularity) Satoshi Nakamoto purposely created bitcoin to be this way. otherwise it would ebb and flow as would the value of whatever it was linked to. Hence miners solve complicated monotonous algorithms that do NOTHING for mankind. it just burns energy, thus giving Bitcoin its own value independent of all other variables.

I don't agree with your view. And I don't agree making this thread a moderated one as well. Bitcoin is popular, that is true. And a lot of people are joining the Bitcoin community because it is already gaining so wide popularity all over the world. But before it became popular, Bitcoin was a lonely invention which started very anonymously. But it has a good use. It is an alternative form of payment to people who prefer to avoid the role of banks in their every transaction. And from there, Bitcoin is gaining the trust of the people.

I think bitcoin is very valuable because of this many people change their life they can earn money in easy way

I don`t think that`s the reason.Bitcoin has not really changed the lives of many people. I believe there is no rational way to help determine the real value of bitcoins. Bitcoins are valuable as collectibles. Their reliability as "custodians of value" depends on the number of people that use them. The more people believe in the seriousness of Bitcoin, the more confidence people will have in this payment system.

Basically, in summary, it is demand and supply that makes bitcoin gets its price values. The other main reason is its use as base currency in purchasing most of the altcoins and also the easiest coin in converting to our fiats. This has earned bitcoin its high regard and value.

I like to compare bitcoins with patents.
A patent only allows you to do something. If many people want to have that permission, the patent is worth really a lot.
Bitcoin allows you to transfer money without banks. And that is something many people want.
Bitcoin allows you to earn because of its increase in price. That is something many people want as well.
To me there is the value of bitcoin.

Rather, Bitcoin appears to have value for the following reasons: It is popular.

In short, people accept and trade in Bitcoin because other people accept and trade in Bitcoin.

Everything has its value. As long as the recognized people are more valuable.

An antique, for example, is not really useful, but it is often valuable because there are many people who approve of it.

The same is true of bitcoins, which are now accepted by many people.

How this one is good though you tried to express it completely but there is difference between the bitcoin and antiques. Though the comparison was upto the market conspiring the OP's question.

So yeah, anything that has recognition or anything where people want to invest their own money (which is valuable ) gets the value of that much of money. For example, Lisa Painting, now what the use of that, despite the thing that it is just known for its mysterious smile and people want to have it because it is popular in the world and one of its kind! The end result is billion dollar painting.

In similar ways, bitcoin is crypto currency with at least some use for us. Its getting value because the demand for the same is growing day by day and people are putting huge investment into it. That why its getting value.

Trading BTC in the market following the law of supply and demand is what determines the price of BTC. However, the costs in mining is also what makes BTC become expensive. The people gives BTC value because it was created for the people to enjoy their freedom for their wealth. It is a revolutionary advancement in technology which is different from the traditional investment vehicles we are aware of.

Now tell me what are the usage of that certain bright stone you called gold.  ;D
People tend to make something valuable when they are shining and that is all it is.
They picked gold because it is harder to find and that makes it valuable.

Now about bitcoin. It had value because of its usage. I get fast transactions now by sending money at a lower price than but large amount of sums.
It is better than a gold which is just so hard and heavy.  ;D

The amount of demand and supply of the Bitcoin determine the value of the coin at any point in time.

This is the main reason which I really think price of bitcoin has a value. The demand which people continues in buying and has the support in bitcoin. Until now it is unstable because of the demand from the user itself.

Yeah, the example you gave like antique is physical, it can be seen. . . Also with gold and other precious metals in contrary to bitcoin which is just digital currency. You cannot see it nor hold it with your hand.

For me Bitcoin is created because of technology. It is like gold where you can exchange it to fiat. That is the same with Bitcoin. Its value can also be exchange in fiat. Good thing about Bitcoin is, this not controlled by government Bitcoin is controlled by us as user of Bitcoin.

Yeah bitcoin is created because of technology but the real purpose of it is not beneficial anymore, transaction charges are very high. For example when you transfer 100 dollars it will cost you  around 10 dollars. And by the way bitcoin now adays is regulated by some government in some countries.

It is not simple to understand how a currency worth is it is managed through a proper strong system and thus after the initial coin offering the interest of the public and the people trust this for the future make the currency value for life time. For the first time it is not so hard to know the currency future but this happen sometime that the bad news have brought some panic in the market for which the market disturb for little time period.

I don’t think the value of Bitcoin comes from being popular. Yes it is popular, but that’s not what makes it valued. The only thing that matters, which is the thing that gives it its value is how much money that is being invested in it by the people. Being just popular makes no sense.

Well, the popularity makes sense in its own way, cause if nobody knows it, no one will invest in it. I’m just trying to explain where the value comes from.

The biggest advantage of bitcoin is the anonymity and absolute security. This is a great advantage that bitcoin has compared to the previously impossible currencies, which is very beneficial for financial systems around the world. That is why bitcoin is very well received in countries with technology priorities such as Japan, Korea, the United States.

Rather, Bitcoin appears to have value for the following reasons: It is popular.

In short, people accept and trade in Bitcoin because other people accept and trade in Bitcoin.
Popularity is not the reason why bitcoin is now valued by people rather because it is very beneficial. I believe that Satoshi Nakamoto readdy made this stage of bitcoin he prepared for this, he gives effort and he give his whole knowledge on how btc become valuable to all people so not popularity but because bitcoin is very potential coin.

Bitcoin is a new technology with unique features - it is an irreversible interpretation that transfers this amount and savings. It's free from censorship and other attacks. It has the power to seize authority (directly or indirectly by inflation). At the beginning (year 2009) Bitcoin had no value, but the above list became attractive to the people because they did not want mine and proposed the first deal for the dollar. So, the first value is established as such. Then, it is strengthened - saw more people could sell Bitcoin - and apply the unique feats that keep the Bitcoin conservation / space / price. Bitcoin has really not changed the life of many people I believe there is no reasonable way to help determine the real value of bitcoins. Bitcoins are valuable as collections. The number of people using reliability as their "protector of value" depends on them. More people believe Bitcoin, more confident people will remain within this payment system.

Its not very apt in saying bitcoin has no value at all.
The fact that it is decentralized, and a digital monetary mode is itself providing it an edge over other paper money and commodities and therefore assigning it a value.

It being popular is not wrong in any sense, but that is not the only reason why people value it and back it. When we go to find the science and technology behind bitcoins, which by the way also laid down a pathway for many many other new cryptocurrencies these days, we cannot stop without aopreciating the whole system.

The security features are at par compared to paper money. And the transparency is also equally fascinating. And the fact that inflation can never occur in bitcoin system is in itself commendable.
Due to all of these reasons and many more, bitcoin has a value, rather an increasing value.

Yes, I totally agree with you. Bitcoin is very useful in the term of money transaction and transfer. When you transfer money using Bitcoin, you do not have any limit to transfer or limit of the amount of money that you want to transfer. That is why people become so interested and want to learn about Bitcoin. In the other hand, Bitcoin is encrypted currency that people cannot track down so easily. If you transfer money in huge amount using bank account so suddenly and unusual, you will questioned and be tracked down by the bank. Even though Bitcoin can also be use to doing transaction on the black market on the internet.

Demand, support, and reputability are the keys to the Bitcoins value. There is also another factor and that is the top market cap which is limited. With every block mined difficulty of the mining process gets harder and value is also influenced in some way because of that.
_______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________
What will happen when all the Bitcoin is mined? That is far in the future but I believe that the Bitcoin will come to the phase where it will stand on the stable value which will be very high at that point.

Just like all currencies in the world. Bitcoin is valuable because it is believed to be valuable. With dollars or other currencies everyone believes in it, and that value is guaranteed by the national government. However, bitcoin is not guaranteed by anything, but it does not depend on anyone. Its value only depends on the supply and demand rules at each moment. So no one can kill Bitcoin.

And the more demand the higher the price would it become due to thing called Scarcity.

The value of bitcoin is completely dependent on human interest in it. It's popularity plays a big part in giving it value because the more popular it gets the more people get interested in it and invest in it. As long as people buy and sell bitcoin, use bitcoin for transactions and trade bitcoin then bitcoin will always have value. And as demand increases, so will the price of bitcoin and the value will increase.

Bitcoin has value because it is as valuable as money. Bitcoin has the properties of money (durable, concise, exchangeable, rare, divisible, and recognizable) based on mathematical formulas rather than based on physical form (such as gold and silver) or confidence in the center (such as fiat currency). In short, Bitcoin is supported by math. With these attributes, all that is required of money to have an exchange rate is trust and acceptance. In the case of Bitcoin, this condition can be measured by the growth of users, sellers and early users. Like other currencies, the value of bitcoin comes only from people who are willing to accept it as a means of payment.

It is not quite correct to say that bitcoin doesn't have any value at all. Bitcoin do have a value, the entry point to have bitcoin is your paper money or your native currency. Which is logically a representation of your own money in digital form. Only because bitcoin adopts a system that goes with the law of supply and demand, that is why the values are changing. Had it not been the method used to give value to it and choose to used just a fixed value aligned to the actual currency then we can clearly understand that bitcoin does have a value and our views would have changed. Look at the paper in the paper money? Does the paper really hold a value? Isn't it really worth compare to the actual metal coins like those containing the equivalent gold or perhaps silver in coins? Of course the answer is no. But are you willing really carry several millions of coins to represent actual value? If you do then you would certainly use forklift to carry it for you when shopping at malls. How uncomfortable will it be!

I know fiat is backed up ny products, services or basically anything that a country produces as an income to place a value on their money. With crypto currencies, I'm not also sure. Maybe it's more of like how many people themselves buy or sell cryto currencies. I guess it could be backed up by fiat.

The era of materialism has long been irrelevant. Although every day, realizing our foundations and dreams, our needs nevertheless demand from us with the word "here and now". Cryptography is the key to fast queries. The good it also develops significant steps. Leaving the Fiats behind, and overcoming the new frontiers of "restriction." Obviously, the current market will be significantly dominant, after the implementation of quantum technology. As an example, the Kelvin Blockchain project is based on quantum computing, which is already an innovation! With the coming quantum technologies, the current market must experience many changes. To be more exact, many coins will leave the market, as there will simply be no demand for them, due to the same technological superiority.
Kelvin Blockchain (https://medium.com/@kelvinchain/the-post-quantum-era-of-blockchain-todays-solutions-for-the-world-of-tomorrow-16bdd970f49a) project itself is flexible to implementing cryptographic algorithms which will make it one of the safest blockchains ever existed with 10+ signature available from the start. This project does not rely on any particular signature algorithm and due to the multi-client use - on some single consensus. In case of any problems, it is possible to quickly locate the threat and prevent it’s distribution throughout the system. Multiple blockchains with different consensus algorithms, token types, and assignments will be available. The multichain technology allows creating almost an unlimited potential for speed and productivity. Kelvin Blockchain can launch up to 2^64 subchains - more available subchains will benefit in increased speed and security. Moreover, all the blockchains will be processed in one wallet so that the client could have fast transactions, secure investments and cheap smart contracts as well as a lot of other services at his hand.

Traditional currency - inflation, devaluation, tax hikes, transaction hiccups, etc. Along with the Blockchain system, the explosion of the 4.0 carrier, has created the value of bitcoin. It's just your opinion, so what do you think gold is worth?
Bitcoin, like gold, has a safe-haven function, and the total amount of bitcoins is certain, and bitcoin is the representative of the blockchain.

Yes and these opinions are sampled and aggregated through how much we buy and invest in it on the market and these market dynamics whether demand or supply determines how we all value bitcoin at any moment in time and that is its true value.

I am a worker and my salary is not enough for my daily expenses and I'll find ways. Because of Bitcoin I have un extra income to support my needs in my life especially when we have a family. When I earn profit i can have money to buy something for my needs and to have the future of my family that's why the Bitcoin have a very big value for me.

The value of bitcoin is determined by the strength of its users, whether buyers or sellers, the same as trading goods in the real market, such as gold and silver trading. In terms of investment, bitcoin's better than gold and silver because the value of bitcoin's more volatile.

The same question can be rephrased as , how does a fiat have any value? This is quite simple. People agreed to move from the era of batter trading to a more convenient way where paper money was issued. People began to accept this in exchange of goods and services and eventually fiat gained value. The same principle applies to Bitcoin.

I believe that the value of Bitcoin is derived from the trust in the system and overall decentralization of the entire ecosystem. At this stage, any person is willing to pay $3,563 for one bitcoin just because everyone has agreed to transact at that value and this value is based on the law of demand and supply. Even when it comes to the Fiat currency, we believe the $1 currency bill has the value of $1 just because the government tell us to do the same.

make sense out of everything around.
Actually what is the value of gold? It can be like any other rock? Or maybe not? What is with money, traditional money?
Why Dollar have value, or Euro?

Now bitcoin is listed at US $ 3,666. even some observers and experts are convinced Bitcoin can be lower or higher this year.

I believe that the value of Bitcoin for this year can be the highest, in other cases, the future of Bitcoin is possible for valuable storage media,
It could be that bitcoin can be a valuable role, like you have a coin that you use today.

Rather, Bitcoin appears to have value for the following reasons: It is popular.

This is far from one reason! I agree that there are such things that are expensive because they are very popular among and therefore people are in great demand. But there are things that have information value. They are valuable because the idea itself is important! Bitcoin is one of those things. In this area there are no better ideas than Bitcoin, so Bitcoin will only grow!
