what is lightning network and nodes? keep hearing bitcoin needs to adopt lightning?

I suggest you read all about it and try to understand the underlying reason why its a good option for bitcoin to adapt. Specially the scaling issue that been the ongoing issue for more than 2 years now.

At first when I heard the word Bitcoin, I just snabbed it and I don't mind what is it. But when someone introduce the "Bitcoin", I was encouraged by her and started to love and mind Bitcoin. I just realized that Bitcoin offers a great opportunity to everybody. It is accessible and makes life comfortable.

bitcoin is the first crypto-currency ever created. So the bitcoin system payment need to be updated time over time.
Lightning network will be the next step  8) 8) 8)

Bitcoin doesn't need to add on Lightning Network but it will help the overall stress on the main chain and at the same time allow for private transactions and micro payments. While it isn't necessary it is in the best interest for Bitcoin that Lightning gets added.
