Title: Presale vs ICO
Post by: blueapple46 on February 26, 2018, 05:11:56 PM
If a project has a presale, is it then automatically an ICO?

Yes, but its called different. Usually companies will start a pre-sale to get funds to market the ICO or to finish up certain things, get money for a permit or license you name it. Pre-sale investors get a lower price than ICO investors for supporting them and get closer to the softcap so they have the funds they need required to get their product out and marketed.

So you are saying that a pre-sale is the first stage and ICO is the second stage? Can a project have only a pre-sale and not an ICO stage? Or is that not possible?

The presale can be private (upon a request via e-mail or any other contact form) and public (the same as ICO)

Yes, an ICO can only have private sale and you can call it like first stage. It all depends on the particular ICO what do they prefer. In the pre-sale you often get huge discounts but then you will have to invest huge amount of money, mostly few thousand dollars worth or even more.

Now I am confused, can you explain the difference between an ICO and a pre-sale? I want to know this because there is a project who had a pre-sale but people in their telegram claim that the project is not an ICO. I want to know this for sure before I can prove my point.

the pre-ico use it more than anything to complete part of the program to carry out the project and to achieve the softcap, it is almost always private or selective and some ask for a certain amount of high money for those who want to participate in the pre-ico, already in the ICO it is more public and with minimum limits until reaching the goal in established money or hardcap

But what if there is no amount mentioned? No softcap or hardcap mentioned? There is only a pre-sale mentioned for a limited time, they do not mention an amount they want to receive. Is this project then still an ICO?

This will take too long... Your goal is basically to know if they're a fraud or not right? so can you just name the ICO here instead? It will be a lot faster since anyone who sees it can look into it.

A public pre-sale would by definition be an ICO.  It's just a way to try and lure people's money into a project by marketing later price increases as current discounts.  Most serious developers think ICOs are a joke.  Take a look at how Ravencoin is currently being rolled out.  That's the proper way to introduce a coin to the community.  No pre-mine.  No ICO.  Just supporters and hard development work.

I would say ICO is the whole event of selling and generating new coins/tokens, and it can include private sale, pre-sale, main sale.

Hasn't Raven been mined for a week before release?

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for.
