It is difficult to know what is a good ico or a scam ico. Scam ICO sometimes can seems legitimate too.
You will have to do a lot of research if the team members are known. Also see if other websites are talking about them and the ICO.
See if the profile of this person match with the data on the internet.
Also look at the whitepaper and see if it is a realistic project.
Sometimes a legitimate ICO may have a poor whitepaper. Like Chineses ICO. But they may be legitimate.
Coins without a goal may be scam. Also copy of another coin may also be a scam.
It is better to just get airdrop or to trade them when they get tradeable and if you see that there is an opportunity that the coin can gain more value.
If the coin only drop, don't take the risk to buy it.

how to distinguish the good ico, ico scam
Try and verify the teams behind every icos and the technology behind it and you are good to go. Many people did not now that it is the teams that scam or make the project successful and most time that the way the project is promoted is what make it to be a good one. I think hundreds percent of projects problem are from the team.

Yeah you need to develop a really good filter for sure. For me the biggest question is whether the token is absolutely necessary for the operation of the blockchain.The best way to avoid Crypto scams is to do a lot of research. Don't just look on page one of Google, look on pages 2, 3, and 4.Also verify them out on Facebook and Twitter, see if they have respectable followers, or are they bought from other countries.

There are a few signs...

Their goal, token amount, token value should be corresponding with each other, if there's a fault in that math, that's a red flag for me.

Their team members and group of advisors; if there are any of them that was realted in a scam ICO before, that's another red flag for me.

Their roadmap should be realistic; sometimes a team may not be able to deliver roadmap instantly and it may take time to see a roadmap but it should be out before the ICO, if it's not that's another red flag as well.

And last but not least; I always keep this in my mind: "If it's too good to be true, it's probably not."

Before it's really difficult to know which one is good ICO and which one is scam ICO cause there are no ICO project analyze website but for now it's much easier when we can use icobench :)). Otherwise you can know which one is good project through the dev team, Whitepaper, roadmap and the way project's going to run. If a project is going to run lending, you should stay away from it :)

Personally I choose ICO, first I read about their whitepaper, check the customer care team on the telegram, see if they respond quickly to the questions the investors put out. They have an ICO community and have a Bounty community. You have to check the roadmap is reasonable. The information I give is the basic element for evaluating a quality ICO program.

These are major stages you have to consider:
1. Check the technical documentation -  discover if the blockchain is really necessary for the project or it's just a simple deriving
of money;
2. Identities of team members of the project - their social media profiles, interviews etc ( things that can prove that these people are real);
3. Innovativeness of the project and the level of competition on the market ( whether the project will be able to gather the required sum of money).

1. Read the whitepaper first. Do you like the idea? Is blockchain is that necessary for this project?
2. Think about the market for which project is targeting? Is it really big and promising?
3. Try to find their social media, mentioning their project in news/socials
4. Find all topics about the project on this forum, find their slack/telegram/twitter, etc. Research the community. Is it active? Is it big? Is it professional?
5. Find their members, try to find their personal info. Their twitter, linkedins, etc.

If it is hyped a lot then it is good ico because you can make more profit, some projects are really good but after ico the price can go below ico price, so good ico is not always profitable. If there is no team, no good website, it may be scam.

Understanding the real time need for such a project and the development team behind it will give the clear description whether the project will succeed or not. Even this prediction gets outlawed when there is lack of funding for the promotion, and in this regard everything is upon trust. Growth happens on the way.

Most ICO's aim and projects are all the same and it's really difficult to determine the good ones, so it's very risky, just take a lot of time reading, studying, and analyzing. If their goal is far-fetched or unrealistic  better avoid it.

Do a lot of research before investing on an ICO, it's difficult to distinguish if it's a scam or not. Check ico list on some websites and they have a lot of ratings there.

Check if they have a proper website that is running a https, telegram, twitter, reddit, medium and etc. If they don't update on one of those social media sites then the ICO must not be a proper ICO.

And importantly check their whitepaper if it will have an impact in cryptocurrency. And lastly check the team behind it and the roadmap of they are aware of their future.

Check Bitcoinus ICO, sale have been started and it's not too late too join. :)

Good luck finding the best ICO!

Its hard to distinguish that, because rightnow icos are all everywere.
You have to read first all the information about that ico before investing or joining, like reading its white paper, road map and etc.
And try also to invest or join in an ico with trusted manager or dev. Because some of their projects are very successful.

actually, we can not know exactly which is scam. because there are many good projects with an experienced team but failing on ICO. I think you just research carefully and wait for the lucky.

Not that hard, as most are scams and most are trying to do something someone else is doing better. But some more specific things:

1. A "discount" time period for ICO with limited coins, then price goes up
2. Airdrops, period
3. A whitepaper that overpromises
4. A roadmap that is unrealistic
5. A team with little experience/the wrong kind of experience

And always trust your gut-

Well, it is pretty difficult to look for a good ICO with the current market conditions. Maybe there are only a few, probably 1 out of 5 ICOS are worth the risk to invest in.

Actually, most of the icos in where i have invested lately are down from ico price (sadly)

A good ICO has a best team, has an active telegram, has an organized spreadsheet, good bounty manager and has a great white paper. And lastly, an ICO will be considered as best ICO if it will reach ots soft and hard cap and will become successful.

Hard to do but with proper research at least you can lower your risk of getting scammed. Always check the team behind the ICO, are they real, do they have the skills etc...Read whitepaper and reviews online from websites like icobench and similar. And never invest more then you are ready to lose.

It is very hard to find or notice which ico is a scam or legit. There are ways for us to identify which is which but still there's a high risk when it comes in investing into Ico's. And for me these are my steps.
1. Check the concept of the project and compare it to the other project and see if they are like the same like most of content came  from the other
2. Roadmaps - check their plan if it is possible to get their goals in the given timeframe.
3. Team members/developers- always do like a backround check (achievements, prev. project etc.)

I know there are still a lot of ways but see whatever it is, even though we have checked all in our checklist there's still a chance that we end up investing into a scam Ico.

Now, I think the most important way to avoid ICO scams is another ICO mechanism, such as DAICO or at least some third party escrow. The investors should know how this funds are spent and if it is possible to earn money.

what if the tokens are unlocked for ICO participants and the rest of the tokens are locked for 6months to 1year (devs fund/future marketing/bounty, ETC). I saw that BelugaPay are unable to release the funds for bounties right after the ICO, it will take atleast 6months to distribute it. The bounties are more than 4months duration.

In the present day is complex to perform this analysis, for example: There are projects with great development and with high dissemination and in the end up failing, on the other hand, there are projects with little structure of development and promotion is medium and  becomes a success. In my opinion a survey of investor interests can help, usually great attention is generated for projects essential on a day to day basis.

It's very difficult to do that, nowadays many scammed ico disguise in a very best way, in ico we don't get a lot of security, we invest based on the white paper and some information from the team and the company, all we can do is research to make sure everything is fit to what the creator and team developers mention, that is why newbie are not suggested to join ico because the risk is high and need a lot of source to do the research

I don't think those methods are good to judge a project. Those can be made up. . And some projects seem good but exaggerated, quite hard to be executed. Need think a lot and carefully if want to join ICO. By the way, I had ever seen a really serious project. The operation team goes to different countries to participate in conferences and meet investors.

A good ICO always gets good grades from different sites. You need to look at the project team, or people who work there are not scammers. Also, when choosing, I pay attention to how the website is designed, this is also very important.

In any case if there are doubts in the team or the project, it is better to refuse from investing

Checklists to validate a good ICO
1) Road map
2)White paper
3)Website
4) Team supporting the project
5)Advisors

Go through the profile of the team and google those names whether they are genuine as they mentioned in site or road map.

Based on my experience to know the good ICO we have to see what the first project their team is working on, see what the ICO price is, and is their Hardcap achieved? A good ICO will also definitely list the coins in good exchange too. For ICO scam be careful with high prices, usually they cheat us the investors hear the price of their coins. So we must be smart to choose ICO to invest. My suggestion if you have the wealth to invest, choose a well-known and famous ICO like BTC, ETH, NXT etc. Thanks.

I'm new to this field, but I read a lot of information about the "world" critical currency, ICO. I can only say that a good project can be found either with good intuition or with a very thorough analysis of information about a specific project, but you can simply participate in everything. By the way, now I'm participating in the project # Konios, this project has collected a very serious and intelligent team, in the success of which you can not doubt. I am confident of the success of this project. I invite everyone to participate in the ICO. The idea of the project is very promising, and this sphere is constantly moving forward! # KoniosOfficial

how to distinguish the good ico, ico scam
HOW TO SPOT A GREAT ICO (AND LEAVE A BAD ONE ALONE).
The ICO phenomenon has started to play a significant role in the crypto-startup world. Lately, more and more experts are looking to decentralized crowd-funding methods with interest.
But, the absence of legal guidelines in the operation of these ICOs has resulted in more than a few scams. This is hardly abnormal for an entirely new, unregulated field; but, would-be investors, nonetheless, find it difficult to discern potential opportunities from grab-the-money-and-run schemes.
If you look at lists of recent ICO campaigns it is really hard to come up with any sort of reasonable filter. There’s so much to be obviously skeptical of in this space that wealthier and experienced investors won’t even consider it — with good reason.
As with any investment, nothing in the ICO space can be predicted or proved with absolute certainty. Analysis of the team, style and quality of management, and even some basic managerial accounting data is not available in most case. Still, most ICO trackers try to combine lists of presumably relevant parameters such as: who holds the collected money (in many cases investors do not even know!), what kind of social network activity a given project can boast, and other seemingly disparate data.
Does this mean ICOs are all bad? Of course not. I prefer to apply some patience, best-practices and investment experience to avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater..
I think I have a working solution to help make an informed assessment of a given product in this domain. Despite the fact that most of the important parameters are not measurable, we found a simple and transparent matrix by which to judge a given ICO:

         •   PRODUCT DIMENSION

Some people like to build parallels between ICOs and the IPOs of the modern technological era. But, this analogy is incongruent — the problem being that the great majority of projects behind ICOs can not present a functioning product or service. In older and less tumultuous times, one could probably make a good enough judgement by reputations of individual team members, e.g. “It’s not Tesla, but Elon is doing a new app…”. Such an approach doesn’t work in crypto-oriented startups because even if the product in question is projecting future success based on past achievements of one or more team members it will likely be a within different legal, work, and management structure as the previous product with no guarantees.
Another important thought to be aware of is that the amount of money raised by an ICO in no way directly translates to a corresponding quality of product. Marketing budgets, clever branding, great intro videos, SEO-wizards…all of these things can help attract attention, bring funds, and inflate perceptions.
With this in mind, we have ranked ICO projects into three tiers: https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/0*PIL8lCBWoXznLN2E.

                1. Lowest tier. No product. These projects lack anything users can touch or test. The company (or just a team if there’s no legal entity) presents only the project pitch and promise. Most of such projects — if not all — have GitHub accounts with some code; but, you would need a few full-time analysts to do even surface-level due diligence.
                2. Middle tier. Second/third/etc product. Example: Iconomi. The ICO result was also impressive: over ten million USD raised. Neither the Iconomi fund — the face product for the ICO — nor any clear full-scale technical description exists. Founders do not try to hide, though. They have Cashila — a great and well accepted product that has been around for a couple of years making many bitcoiners’ lives easier. The existence and usefulness of the team’s previous product seems to be enough of a promise for Iconomi investors.
                3. Highest tier. Functioning product. Rarely, does a project fall into this category by offering a usable iteration of their product during the ICO. Example: Ethereum, Swish.

         •      COIN DIMENSION
The middle and most important word in the ICO acronym is “coin”. We’ve written about how difficult it might be for a project to “coinify” itself. Sales of “coins” didn’t become the new type of crowdfunding overnight. The first appcoins were merely trying to repeat the success of Bitcoin and were mostly clones of it in technical sense. Later deviations became greater, alternative coins got transformed from cryptocurrency to “application coins” and this is where things got really mixed up.
The basic borderlines, however, remained where they were from the very beginning. Thus, projects can further be judged through a second set of criteria and fall into these three categories:

                1. Lowest category. A senseless app coin claim made. Examples are numerous, unfortunately. It is very hard to explain why KimDotCom’s project is okay with bitcoins while Steemit, Incent, Chronobank and dozens others are not. These coins have very little chance of success due to a) being fundamentally superfluous and b) trying to survive under strong speculative pressure.
                2. Middle category. There is an app coin and it is really needed, it is part of product’s essence. Example: Ethereum. This kind of project is very rare. They are generally less attractive compared to straight-forward DAOs or DACs (distributed autonomous organization or corporation) because it is extremely difficult to keep your inner currency, the blood of your product’s organism, in the needed temperature range under the pressure of free markets filled with short term traders (and hackers too).
                3. Highest category. No appcoin claim. Projects in this category do not try to create an “inner currency” proving this way or another that normal money (or even BTC) are not good enough for them. Such projects are basically incorporated companies or stable teams transforming their organization into a formalized form of a DAO with voting, petitions, and budgeting put on safe, distributed, rails. This case is the closest to “normal” IPO when companies just change their form of ownership via a general public offering for individual ownership of equities. Examples: Iconomi, Swish.

     •        MAPPING THE ICO SPACE: https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/0*qYvf0RtN-WTBeDIb.
Our map divides the space into a nine-slot matrix with positive and negative spaces determined at various intersections. An interesting application of this map is measuring the risk parameter of your portfolio if you own a bunch of coins. There’s a simple set of rules we suggest:
             - Comparing two assets both in the negative territory: the greater the amount of money already collected by a project in the negative territory the greater your risk associated with owning its coins; negative-territory projects — lacking solid grounds in the first place — become even less stable when they grow larger.
             - Follow the contrary rule when comparing two assets that are both in the positive territory: the greater the amount collected by a project in the positive territory the lower your risk associated with owning its coins.
             - And, it goes without saying, one should avoid investing in ICOs with negative characteristics at all. Of course, sometimes there are factors that prevail, such as large “early-bird” bonuses making speculative investment more worthwhile.

***3 WAYS TO IDENTIFY AN ICO SCAM

1. The Developers Are Anonymous

The first and most blatant sign of an ICO scam is that the token’s developers are anonymous or otherwise-unknown. While it’s true that the creator of Bitcoin — a pseudonymous individual or group operating under the name Satoshi Nakamoto — did not reveal his true identity, he was able to this because he created a network that did not depend on the trustworthiness of a central authority. This is not the case with ICOs and TGEs. By holding an ICO, a startup is asking token buyers to trust that the developers will deliver a working product instead of running off with their money, so the team should be willing to back up its promises and claims with verifiable identities.

If a team is unwilling to identify itself, token buyers should be very cautious about contributing to the project. While there may be valid reasons to desire this privacy, it is far more likely that their purposes are nefarious. PlexCoin, for instance, declined to reveal the identities of its team members, obfuscating the fact that one of its organizers had run afoul of securities regulations in Quebec on several occasions, both before and during the PlexCoin ICO.

2. The Token Does Not Have a Clear Use Case

Another sign of an ICO scam is that the developers are unable to clearly articulate a valid use case for the token. The token should serve a key purpose in the startup’s platform. If it does not, the token will not sustain its value over the long-term. Related to this problem are tokens that advertise themselves merely as digital currencies without offering any real innovations or improvements upon existing cryptocurrency technology.

3. The Whitepaper Sets Unrealistic Goals

However, even if the token does have a clear use case, token buyers should be wary of startups that advertise overly-optimistic roadmaps. If the whitepaper sets an unrealistic development schedule, it either means the developers are using deceptive tactics to attract token buyers or they lack the necessary experience to give a sensible scope to the project. Either way, this does not bode well for the success of the project and its corresponding token.

To avoid falling prey to ICO scams, token buyers should educate themselves and conduct due diligence before deciding to contribute to a project. Strategic Coin offers numerous resources to assist token buyers with their research, including token analysis reports and exclusive interviews with startups conducting token generation events.

Strategic Coin is your go-to source for information about launching and participating in utility token ICOs. Whether you are a start-up or existing business that desires to enlist the help of a professional utility token ICO advisor or a token buyer who needs help navigating the blockchain space, Strategic Coin will provide you with the resources you need to take advantage of market opportunities within the crypto marketplace.

determing which is which might takes time. You will know it by reading the whitepaper. Most scams ICO's project are not aligned with their roadmap. But sometimes knowing if it is a scam is hard given that the team behind the project are really a con artist.

hello friends, i think it is very difficult to distinguish the good ICO and the scam ICO. but may be able to minimize the scam ICO by examining the important things related to the project. one of them by observing the concept of the project, track record of the development team, advisory team, and business plan, as well as the legality of the project.

in my opinion the base for a good ico is a solid project, there are a lot of icos with stupid ideas that aren't related to the blockchain, so their token will be probabily worthless because they haven't a real usage. also a competent team is important, stay away from icos with an anonimous team, you need to see their cv and what they have done in the past

It is not easy to distinguish matters such as this, which in the real sense but also a scam instead of many and vice versa. clear if more thoroughly later because the longer it will be increasingly accustomed to distinguish a real scam and ICO.

I'm looking at the team, scam Ico are posting fake people in their team page, I have seen this on several Ico if they are faking people, this could only mean their project is fake and don't deserve our attention, if the team is real then you can look at their expertise if they can really deliver the goods.

In A LOT of the cases, ICO price falls down at the end of the ICO. I believe in 95% of the ICO, the best strategy is to wait until after the end. It gives you some extra advantages:

- serious possibility of lower price (than ICO price)
- you can check how much money was risen, thus having an idea about support and seriousness of the project

The first step is to develop a strategy for selecting ico. For example:
1- analyze the team;
2- The idea;
3- Whether this project is necessary to a society;
4- Partners;
5- I'm looking at the rating on https://icobench.com/ (https://icobench.com/);

2. Roadmaps
3. Team members/developers

how to distinguish the good ico, ico scam

An easy way to learn a scam or not. If everything is perfect, then this is a skam. If everything is bad, then this is also a scam. Should not be perfect and not bad. The project should have errors that the team has realized and corrected. A team that listens to advice. A project that really lives. A living project can not be perfect. The project should not with 100% certainty say that they will achieve the goal on an exact day with an accuracy of a minute. I consider "road maps" with exact dates absurd. The exact "road map" can only be a project that copies the project from a competitor. If the project does, something new, then they can not know exactly whether they will ever get it done, and even if it does, then when it will turn out nobody can predict. Therefore, if the team says confidently that they will do what they never did, it will be a lie and such a project will be a scam. The team should be honest always, even if it does not taste good. Remember the words of Elon Musk. He said: "There were 1000 reasons that it will not fly, but the rocket still took off. I still can not believe that it is flying."  ;D If the team says that they will create on 6 September 2018 an artificial intellect, it's a lie. When and who will create an artificial intellect nobody knows. Stay away from such predictors of charlatans!!!

There isn't any way you can distinguish between them two as all the ICOs have a pretty white paper with shills hyping and promoting their coins. You are better off just investing in already established coins as that way your investment will be safe.

It is more obvious if the OP of a campaign is newbie. I did not mean all newbie OP is a scam but it is just an assumption of mine. If that will be then their works is noticeable and self obvious that it is a scam. Honestly it is hard to say one scam campaign for sometimes the OP is not a newbie but higher ranks.

Even if they're real, they probably wont be a success. There are too many ICOs with too many of the same ideas.

I would check their team and ensure they are who they are. Download the whitepaper and read through it too. All legit ICOs should have a whitepaper.

See no one can tell you that for sure. It will require you to have awareness and some general analytical skills which are not common with everyone and hence those people fall victims to such scams. Until now I would have told you to blindly trust the campaigns which are started by good campaign managers like atriz, sylon etc but after the recent exposure of atriz and how he hid lies of a company which ended up with investors getting duped, I wouldn't suggest that anymore. Be your own judge.

By the way, I use some of the following parameters - from a speculative point of view:

* TEAM

- if team members are known, check their profiles and experience
- if team members are anonymous, check if there's a specific reason why they remain anonymous (for ex. because it's an anonimity coin). If there is no reason, I consider it as scam unless proven otherwise :)

* DEVELOPMENT

Do a follow-up of the development on social channels. No news of development for 4 months? Stop kidding yourself then.

* SUPPLY

NORMALLY (yes, not always), the higher the supply, the lower the chance of extremely high prices. But exceptions exist of course, especially for really good projects.

* SUPPORT / COMMUNITY

Check for numbers of followers: on Twitter, FB, BTCtalk threads and so on. NORMALLY (yes not always...) the higher the support, the more lifespan is guaranteed.

* THE PROJECT - OF COURSE

The most important thing. Just another payment coin? Just another gambling project? Real estate?

I mean, is it really an interesting project which has something new to offer? Be realistic and ask yourself:

1. Is this what we (or some - enough people to keep it alive) are waiting for? Gap in the market? Interesting project?
2. Does the fact that the project is created on the Blockchain create an added value?

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Sumptuously!
Delicately, and most importantly in simple words given a maximum of useful information.
And I will add - now I draw attention to who is the manager of the company's bounty. If I already worked with him and was successful - I will join.

In addition to these traditional factors, potential investors need to pay attention to a number of factors specific to ICO.First of all, it is necessary to answer the question of whether blockades, tokens and ICOs are really necessary to complete the task. If the same results can be achieved without the use of blocking, chances are, the best solution for this project is to leave ICO and attract investment in a more traditional way. The token released must be an integral central element of the proposed project, a kind of central link, a guide to the profits brought by the project

Look at the team, look at their qualifications and what they do. Do they have a working product or at least a prototype or are they just promises and ideas? I personally think that a working product is the best indicator for a good ICO, otherwise you just have to trust their team to actually do it eventually. In this bear market is harder for ICO's to succeed which in a way is good thing because it will eventually get rid of shitty ICO's. Eventually...

That could be a big problem today,  but some ICO are very obvious to see that it is just a scam specially if they don't have a strong platform and team itself. But some project also seems to be real in the start and we could only find out that it is a scam after taking investors money and disappear. That's why we should spend time on searching and reading the entire ICO details to be sure that could be a legit one.

ICO is not a scam if it does not achieve certain sales targets, everything is running transparently, ICO scam is a sale that does not actually pay you permanently without any explanation. At least from whitepapers, roadmaps, and even team exclusivity and developers make us believe to invest in supporting the success of ICO, what matters most is how well they look to create high traffic from large and well-targeted investors.

whether other websites are talking about them and ICO,
If not this will be questioned !?
See Also if this person's tim profile matches the data on the internet.
Look at the white paper or whitepaper and see if it's a realistic project.

The best way to distinguish between a good ICO and a scam is a white paper which has all the details in it, you have to judge everything in an objective manner there should be no inconsistencies in the technology concept roadmap and the team. If you check all these things it will be very easy for you to decide that the ICO is good or not.

Some of these projects are very sophisticated nowadays, and they are likely to have a way to deal with the indexes that are being evaluated on ICO quality rating websites, so I do not believe that those are true. . My personal analysis is, see the whitepaper, roadmap, team and product of the project.

The idea and purpose of the project also really distinguishes between a quality project and a bad project, look for a project that has good innovation and can be run when the funds have been collected, do not choose a project that has many obstacles to rules and regulations, and don't forget to see the formation of the team and see how complete information on their project..

I just saw a really similar topic few minutes ago, and i know this is important and popular topic "what is scam or what is not"

Generally what You should do is: Check the team, do a real research on the members and second check the project behind! Do they have plans, do they have real value offered to the customers or either to the world. And the website can be an indication how much effort do they put to create it.
