Title: Someone keeps sending me BTC - what do?
Post by: checkmate on July 20, 2011, 10:38:56 AM
Hello guys,

I've been mining for some months now and use Bitmarket for my trades.
Since 14th of June, someone keeps sending me BTC to my Bitmarket account... it's around 172.8 right now, from the person (I did not trade it yet).

Some days there are no funds incoming, on others 3-5/day ... always like "5,65" or "0,38" - those kinda payments.

Where do they come from and why should someone do that? It makes me feel uneasy not to know where it comes from...

Plus 172 BTC isn't too less money, is it?

You can always send them to me if you don't want them, there is not really a way to know where they came from (as in a specific person)

Are they transactions/offers that you completed, but did not pay for? If not, then how are they sending it to your account?
Or do you mean that they may be sending to your Bitmarket deposit address?

That's a whole lot of coins!!! I would love getting that much. But if they aren't doing it on purpose, they should have found out that it's not going to THEIR account.
But they should have a chance to get them back if they are ignorant of what is happening.

Or another idea is that it is an error by Bitmarket. If this was the case, I wouldn't do anything...just take the coins :)

Could they be your mining payouts?

No.

Well, assuming you've told us everything there is to know, then someone has picked the wrong address to send to. Have you given the Bitcoin address that's receiving the funds to anyone?

Theoretically, you could have an address collision, where two people manage to generate the same address, but that's astronomically unlikely.

Only 'astronomically unlikely' if the particular software generating the address is doing it properly.

I think this needs to be followed up by the OP with bitmarket - just in case they are either generating addresses incorrectly, or somehow assigned to more than one user.

It could be a collision problem, if the random generation function is flawed.

If you want to help the Bitcoin developers correct issues with the software (assuming this is an issue with the software), then I think the best thing to do is to create another wallet, and "pay almost all of them" from your current wallet to your new wallet.  Document the transaction here (how much, when, and to which Bitcoin address you paid).

Also, state what version of the software you used to generate your original wallet, as well as the specific hardware platform.

Hopefully, the rightful owner will step forward and complain.  Then the software can be be examined for flaws in the algorithm.
If someone steps forward, have THEM pay the remainder of the coins to another wallet (to prove that they are the rightful owner), before you give them their money back.

Don't believe other people's claims that it's their money, unless they can prove control of the wallet through spending.

Odds are it is a bug in Bitmarket.  They are incorrectly attributing someone else's deposits to your account.

I'd figure out how to get it back. You could eventually be sued for keeping it, not to mention it just isn't nice.

Weren't people complaining about BTC missing on bitmarket? :P

Either way....that's a little ridiculous. Sounds like you should take a look at my sig.

Maybe someone is giving away free drugs on Silk Road and trying to frame you! Muahahah!!!

If you don't want to keep the BTC, I say you should spend it to help support the community.  Buy lots of stuff off the forum to support fellow members.  Donate some to people's sig addresses when they say something useful.  Try a few of the gambling websites.  Just spread them around, have fun doing it, and get some cool stuff.

Perhaps someone is confident that they can have your wallet.dat at will and is trying to 'launder' value through your identity.  That would be a method I might employ if I had need to cover my tracks. (I would probably leave you with your initial balance since I am not a thief...though it could be argued that using your existence in this way would be a form of theft.)

Note that this is a _hypothesis_ and nothing more.  Many people get confused on the meaning of that word.

^^^ This.  That was my gut feeling.  Anybody who is able to generate that quantity of BTC at current difficulty is smart enough to know they're not receiving their deposits... so either you have a Great Expectations anonymous benefactor (Spoiler Alert: It was the convict he gave vittles!), or someone is about to rob you.  I'd generate a new wallet, move the coins, change your passwords everywhere, etc. and do some serious spyware scanning.

Worst case scenario, you're being paranoid, but have raised your security and technical knowledge in the process.

If not, PLEASE don't come crying in here about how all your BTC were stolen.

Best of luck!
