Title: $260,000 stolen from my ethereum wallet
Post by: xxxcrypto on March 02, 2018, 02:19:20 PM
Hi bitcointalk users,

I am really asking for your help and understanding. Tonight i was hacked. My wallet (0x005AFd8B9823e54A398505e88DC62042C00a528E) was attacked during the night and someone stole around $260k. I entered the wallet to check my funds and found that half is missing. How can this happen? I mean i was never sharing my private key with anyone and .json file was in safe place. I was logged on with MetaMask for a long time and last time i shared my private key was in Etherdelta account 2 months ago. On my opinion, private key or .json could not have been compromised physically or by anybody.

Really stupid that this scammer started with tiny DATAcoin in amount of 0.57 cents... then Arcblock, Dragonchain and Nebulas and again Monaco $8 amount and then others. It looks really strange. Because other half of $250k amount he didnt touch. Here is scammers wallet (0xF2b4e6123F05D6b7c44Fefa4F0AD243E7d3A81cB). The other half was sent by me after 9-10 hours after scam to new wallet. Please can you have a look and help me with this issue? Any advices upon this issue?

Have you recently got into myetherwallet?
Most likely you have been exposed to phishing, fake sites that resemble the original site and they have stolen your private key.
Your actions are right to move the rest of your assets, I am sad that I can not help you and see what happened to you. Advice from me, if you want to hold alt for long term, consider buying and using nano ledger or trezor.

Are you sure you didn't share your private key to anyone? Because many users are giving their private key and address while participating on bounties and airdrops who are the most of the victims of the hackers.By the way there is no possibility to someone hack your wallet without your private key.But why he lest the other $250K worth funds left. ::)

Jeeez that is scary. Lately, there were some scams with MYetherwallet. They used phishing to get what they need.
Did you go to the Myetherwallet page?

Its quiet puzzling my mind why the hacker did still left amounts half of $260k? So theres still left $130k on the account or on your MEW. Then the best thing to do now is to get those coins out of that wallet and transfer it into another MEW since that address is already compromised.Be fast if you don't like for the scammer to get that remaining amount. His to obedient or do have conscience to left you out half of your money. ;D

If it really hacks he might steal all the money which is in your account, I think to check it one more time, because maybe you transferred some tokens. If it was hacked the person should steal all the amount in your account.

Well, if you are sure that you did not share your private keys with anyone, then it is a good possibility that your system itself is compromised. That's the only way a hacker can find the keys then. Also you said that you used your private key in Etherdelta. That could also be the reason. You shouldn't have shared your private keys there. Instead used the Metamask to login and transact. Few months ago Etherdelta was hacked and maybe that's where your key was leaked. Or as others have mentioned, you might have entered a phishing site or had opened a phishing email.

The best thing to do now is scan you computer with some good malware scanner like Malwarebytes. And if possible use a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano S. Also think where you could have made the mistake so that you don't make it again. If you remember, then post it here also, so we guys can also learn and be careful.

Yeah you are right?why the hacker left some amount in the wallet it is not big deal to transfer that funds too.

But what he need to do is move all the available funds to a new MEW or other wallets which can support your tokens.

It doesn't make sense. Why would he wait for 2 months to steal your tokens?
Think what you did, maybe you entered phishing site by accident.
Maybe you have keylogger.

sorry if tokens have been stolen hackers, let alone.

because it can not be pulled back to your wallet.

Indeed the amount is very tempting. and I am also sorry to hear that.

and I recommend using two ETH wallets.
one for storing tokens, and one for trading, so do not happen for the second time something like this.

So annoying, these incidents usually happen when you unconsciously click a link from email that virtually opens a page like myetherwallet, mistakenly entered private key gets shared immediately with attackers but here rises a question that why scammer didn't transferred whole amount/coins ? Was he fed-up of money or the time felt lessen for him?

I agree. And that two wallets it's better to use on two computers. One online and one offline. That way you can do offline transfers.
It is very safe, but you still need to stay away from phishing sites.

If you saw that the hacker is transferring small amounts of coins you should have done action and transfer your coins to other MEW log on to another device because i suspect that the hacker has a keylog on your pc or other means just to get your private keys, sad to say you can't recover those coins anymore unless you know that person and you have a solid and valid evidence you may consider filing a case against him/her.

Hello crypto community, i am coming back to you again with some updates of my unlikely story. I saw some ethereum movements 2 days ago. Here is the adress where money were sent  0x67E1BDA4ac3e9DaA16982d4745B838377236Cd25 (which is empty) and then straight to another one 0x0D0707963952f2fBA59dD06f2b425ace40b492Fe (where is around 140m funds on it).
What do you think whether this adresses of an exchange or something different?

shai sorry i sincerely appologize for that sudden incident, i was also hacked, but this is a decentralized system which you can't do anything to restore your token. what you will do is that just be mindful of airdrop and untrusted links you clicks on your email's also remove your private keys in any exchange platform like etherdelta, Idex and any other exchange that you export your private keys. i was hack through that processes.

in these system you think of your security first before any other work, and you know your security is your priority

i dolly sympathized with you.

if you find exchange details then mail to exchanges or contact them on telegram .
i dont think it is easy to get funds back once hacked but still you should not loose hope .

however why you did not buy a hardware wallet for such high amount of portfolio ?

A lot of people lost their funds because of hack issues. Seriously better not to use MEW. Even keeping your funds at exchange sites is more safe imho. MEW is the worst wallet by far. They couldn't develop a worst wallet than that one probably. Shame.

Yeah you are right?why the hacker left some amount in the wallet it is not a big deal to transfer that funds too.

But what he needs to do is move all the available funds to a new MEW or other wallets which can support your tokens.

That is the right option he needs to do because instead of losing all the left money and it is better to move to another wallet in order to safeguard the left money. We have to take care ourselves to protect our accounts, there are many people who target our accounts daily.

I think there was an issue recently with MEW being hacked and it was not advisable to log in to the Myerherwallet site yet because of the hackers who stole a huge amount of money worth. So logging in back to check your account would be very risky if you check your coins on your account back.
