If you find cheaters report to mods here
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2896910.msg31441438#msg31441438

So far checked 2000+ accounts, with 50 smerit points transactions, 7 cheaters reported (xxx) on my link, 23 suspicius (x) 28 seems fine.

Sadly the link to the post with merit can be no working, but the links for bitcointalk users are 100% working
So you need to click on profile, and see merit history

Post by: EthanB on March 03, 2018, 03:02:20 PM
I'm wondering if anybody has come up with a good distinction between suspicious merit and stupid merit? Besides intention, which we cannot tell lest ye be an oracle. It seems that we may be unduly punishing certain uninformed users, which seems a bit harsh if that is the case. We must understand that newbies, uninformed users and regular low-ranking users are going to merit posts that aren't spectacular. There has been obvious abuse of merit that we have tracked down and taken care of, but I just don't want us to get over zealous and end up throwing out the baby with the bath water. Is their foolish use of their own merit worth punishment? Obviously circles of merit abuse are actionable, but where is the line and what is the most "innocent" or "questionable" case in which someone has been punished for merit abuse?

What criteria are you using to qualify these as suspicious, cheater and fine? Either way, useful sheet for multiple reasons. I just hope my concern is not misunderstood of unheeded.

If I remember correctly, I was given 50 merit for a post, and I suspect that was to allow me to award sMerit to newbies and juniors ( which I have tried to do). Being able to award sMerit is really the only advantage in receiving merit for Heros and Legendaries.

Although it's always nice to know you are appreciated, but a thank you and an expansion of a post might have more value for the forum.

Thats why the file is public, anyone can check and report here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2896910.msg31441438#msg31441438

So far I reported few people
1 jr gained 90 smerit in 10 minutes to rank up from 2/3 people
3 alts linked with proof of eth address linked

So in others words I report only clear abuse the suspicius one if no proof I don't report.

WOW what a great job you've done! What is your target in this cheaters finding? Is it kinda job for you? I saw couple of cheater who abuse merit system, but I just ignored them. Do you count that every concrete case should to be reported and I'm doing wrong with ignoration of such subjects?

This is sort of what I mean, I know nobody believe this case to be abuse, but when a user that isn't fully aware of the guidelines of merit notices this they probably get bright ideas about throwing their merit around in a similar fashion. Then they appear to be abusers for following the lead of the prestigious members and sending merit around foolishly (because they do not understand the nuance of your case in receiving merit), but not maliciously. I'm not defending merit abusers, because coinlocket$ seems to be operating admirably.

So in others words I report only clear abuse the suspicius one if no proof I don't report.

This is more comforting, in a sense, because I suppose I wasn't thinking too clear headed when I was concerned. I must have forgotten for a minute that the mods and staff have the final say on whether or not someone is going to be banned. DT members seem to do a fine job, most of the time, at holding their trigger finger unless it is deserved. I can't argue with only reporting the cases that have solid evidence to back them. Am relieved to know that we're operating on more than a feeling.

Boy, oh boy, is this something. This is going to make me entertained for hours. I've never worked with google spreadsheet but can I download it so I can edit it myself or is this strictly online?

Found one suspicious that asked for merit to redistribute it because he was stuck? and so he received 50 merit.  ;D

Is not  a job cause i'm not paid  :-[, I hate cheaters of any kind. I think some people here are lucky and joined this world years ago so I really hate when they are high ranked and they cheat, so I always report.

Some cases are very clear, like senior members / full members sending 20 to user X and then getting 10 back for a crappy post.

If the merit exchange is less than 2 points... I would just let it go. Else, just use good judgement.

Always take into account that once the initial smerit is depleted, even the farmers will need to do good posting to rank up, and that is almost here judging from the graphs that show merit awards declining asymptotically towards a certain value that can be managed by Theymos by creating sources or giving them more merit.

Actually, if you're a Hero Member, you need to have at least 1000 Merit to reach the Legendary Member status, so if you're strictly looking at Merit as a means to 'level up', it still has utility to Hero Members.

However, end of the day, the idea is to influence behavior for the good in the forum, and I think that general sentiment is true even for Hero/Legendary Members. I don't have data on this, but I would be surprised if the quality of posts even for the Hero/Legendary Members hasn't gone up since the introduction of the merit system.

At some point your post quality can hit a cap and it doesn't get much better; most Hero/Legendary members are at that mark with the exception of true signature spammers. Still, if you're making a contribution to the forum you're still going to get merit and what you deserve. Plenty of people are already at 600-700 merit from the default 500 merit for Hero members. Heroes and Legendaries typically get less merits for good posts in most sections of the forums, but merit is still being passed around.

He doesn't mean it that way, instead he just wanted to appreciate the ones who Merited him, and even if it really is 50 Merits (which is absurd) he wanted to redistribute it to the lower ranked members which ofcourse those that are only deserving to earn Merits in exchange for the 50 Merits he received.

Well since the creation of this forum the Ranking system is just to determine how long have you been in the forum, therefore it was just a title. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are Hero/Legendary Members who don't make constructive/quality posts.

Found one suspicious that asked for merit to redistribute it because he was stuck? and so he received 50 merit.  ;D

I've found one my self some days ago but, I don't properly know how to report those misdeeds, and to be able to identify who are his comrades or alt accounts that he owns.

Can you provide a guide to this, I wanted to join the brigade if possible. I for one also wants to lessen the abusers to improve this forum.

I believe that the new merit system has brought more negativity than good. Perhaps, the quality of some posts has increased, but people simply not give their smerits. The new system has generated a new market for the purchase and sale of smerits. Crowds of people received a negative trust. Plus the fact that revealed a lot of multi-accounts. Soon smerit will end at accounts and what to do then?

Some cases are very clear, like senior members / full members sending 20 to user X and then getting 10 back for a crappy post.

Again, I wouldn't call even these cases "very clear" cases of abuse. It could very easily be the case that these users are using their merit in stupid ways not abusive ways. I'm not saying to avoid taking action against abusers, but to say that something is very clear when it could just be a couple of uninformed users that do not know what constitutes a quality post or do not realize the implications of their merit usage. "Crappy" Post is subjective, and if we're going to keep merit subjective then we need to accept that some users are going to merit posts you believe to be crappy. The hope is that the merit system will dry these people out, as they will be subject to the flow, decay and earning of merit the same as the rest of us. Without a source they cannot do any significant damage.

If the merit exchange is less than 2 points... I would just let it go. Else, just use good judgement.

I think the "good judgement" should come in the form of which posts you merit, not primarily in your crticism of the posts another user chooses to merit. I really believe it might be beneficial to just let them run rampant to some degree, and see what the impact is, because I believe they would run out of merit very quickly, make their alts/circles very obvious, they wouldn't be able to rank up and the system would discourage them much more. I believe catching them and making a manual judgement is only going to serve to allow these abusers to think "if only I hid my abuse better, or did it in smaller chunks I could benefit". We should allow the system to callously render their schemes useless.

Always take into account that once the initial smerit is depleted, even the farmers will need to do good posting to rank up, and that is almost here judging from the graphs that show merit awards declining asymptotically towards a certain value that can be managed by Theymos by creating sources or giving them more merit.

This is where we agree, and sort of the basis for a lot of what I've discussed. Merit distribution is going to be very efficient in a very short period of time. It isn't a perfect system, but I do believe it will get better with time and I also believe it has done a good job of proving that since it's implementation.

I'd be interested in a count of the number of posts that each awarder has given a merit. Awarders who give one or two points to a wide range of posters may be more valuable to the community than a heavy hitter giving out 50 at a time, even if he awards more points.

So what do I gain by becoming a Legendary. I've got all the benefits and facilities that I need as a Hero. All legendary with give me is a change of title, and a messed up coin at the end of my string. :)

Don't tell me that I can earn more from bounty programmes, because I'm one of the ones that thinks they should be banned.

I did a big review this week on my weekly report -> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oMMilTdBWJsFkORXm8e82SI-O5UeK36YtdXoOM6gxWM/edit?usp=sharing

Over 7322 merits for the past week

At least 450 are fake
At least 500 are almost fake
1500 are genuine
and 5000 unchecked too many  :-\

If we considering all the 4500 not checked merit as genuine we have almost 15% fake merit.
If we keep the proportion 1000 fake over 2500 we have 40% fake merit.
If we do a more realist proportion we can suppose 25-30% fake merit
Also almost 40-50% of merit is given/exchanged/giveaway to legendary accounts (nothing against it ofcourse, just a note)

Every RED merit abuser is reported for merit abusing here

Some of purple can be reported for merit abusing -> rank up from JR to member in 1-2 days from the same person
Others purple are on the right way to be reported. Some purple can be wrong but they are not reported for now, they are the "high attention" target.

What makes you think the new system has brought more negativity??? ??? Imagine people who came at the beginning of the year, now would have the status of a full member, the rank will be useless... :-\ I think the introduction of merit is fully justified. Otherwise all of us would rest against the rank Legendary and Hero  ;)

Nice to see a member giving so much time to find out merit abusers on this forum. I will go through the information shared in OP and will try to find if some cheater was still  left noticed.

Some of the ways to find alt accounts:

1) Check the writing style of the user. In most of the cases the account farmer will use same writing style in all his alt accounts.

2) Check the last activity of suspicious accounts. Suppose, you find that two accounts might be alt accounts. See the last activity to find any connection.
