Title: Psychology of Betting High on Forum Ads
Post by: Xian01 on October 01, 2013, 02:55:07 AM
 I came across this post on the recent ad auctions and my jaw dropped;

7 @ 30

 Why would someone make an outrageous bid like that right off the bat ? To me it just seems like an ostentatious waste of money.

Forum auctions end in an arbitrary time. Sometimes, they end before you can rebid.

That seems like a pretty good reason to me, provided you actually willing to part with that kind of BTC. But yeah, my pants caught on fire when I saw that bid.

I thought only ad revenue goes towards paying staff, while donations are for updating forum software?

You're right, and it's not even all of the add revenue only a percentage of it.

Do different staff members get different payments based on the sections they are moderating, or something like that?

Only theymos knows the payment algorithm.

Yup, it's based off of what you do.

Make a bunch of accurate reports of things that violate our policies (which, for the most part, our policies boil down to staying on topic and posting topics in the correct board). Keep doing that and wait until we need an additional moderator. Theymos will then select people from the topish of the list (he will check your posting history and such to make sure that you're a good person, so being at the top of the list isn't everything). He will usually start you off on a single board. If you do well there and keep reporting posts elsewhere, he'll make you a global mod when we have a need for one.
