Title: Are wallet (not online services) to wallet transfers safe?
Post by: ThinkFast on October 01, 2013, 02:56:44 AM
Are wallet (not online services) to wallet transfers safe?
Ex: If I started using Bitcoin-Qt and then wanted to transfer my balance to my Multibit wallet.
I'm only asking because I thought I read a post about a bug in that scenario.
Thanks.

It would be nice to have compatibility list/sheet from develepers.
Maybe with versions, too.

Always assume it is unsafe. Backups are your friend.

Can you clarify your question? Sending your bitcoins with a normal Bitcoin transaction to an address in another wallet you control is not in any way different from sending bitcoins to any other address. If every Bitcoin transaction was unsafe, we'd have a problem.

Of course, whenever you receive significant funds (including from yourself) you'd want to make sure your receiving wallet is functional and backed up.

Migrating wallet files or private keys is a different issue.

Point taken. Thanks.

This is my approach to the internet too.
My solution is, buy a PPC Mac and do your business on it. Nothing else. How many hackers are targeting the PPC, now that Mac went to Intel?

Agreed.

So this is clearly the safest way.

You are very good at breaking problems down into simple terms.
Thanks.

On a side note: Given your signature, Have you seen the IMAX theater in Ashdod?

What you could do is export all the private keys from one wallet, then import all the same private keys on the new wallet. A lot depends on the different wallets. You can use pywallet on bitcoin-qt wallet.dat files to dump all the private keys.

I don't know about the other wallet software.

It's much easier to just send all your coins (or what you need anyway) from your old wallet to your new wallet. I do, however, like bitcoin-qt.

What's the possible issue if we install two different software wallet (ie. Bitcoin Qt and Multibit) on the same time in the same machine though?  :-\

I don't know of any particular issue with this scenario.
