They are alphanumeric strings tied to an address and unique for the entire system. So for example instead of sending coins to 3J98t1WpEZ73CNmQviecrnyiWrnqRhWNLy you could send it to SatoshisHotWallet. I think such solution would make it much easier to use Bitcoin and considerably minimise user errors.
Seeing as this is being implemented for one of Bitcoin's forks it's certainly a feasible solution. Is something like this currently planned for Bitcoin? If not, can we raise a ticket to Bitcoin devs so it could be considered? Title: Re: Will Bitcoin support aliases? There was a proposal for aliases but it didn't get a mutual consent, to be precise BIP15 by Amir Taaki
