I don't think he was dumb as lazy.  To maintain anonymity there are a million things you have to do and if you mess just a couple up it can ruin the whole thing.

Operating inside the US, serving primarily US customers?

It cannot get any dumber.

Oh wait, it can! In July, Homeland Security showed up at his door asking questions about the fake IDs he had ordered. His apparent response? Business as usual.

The only non-dumb response in that situation is to run, because your life as you know it is about to be over.

Thing is that the technology driving Silk Road did not even burp from what I understand. Where one dies, two more shall rise to take its place. I have no doubts many will spring up, learning from this guys mistakes.

But the server running the site has to 100% locked down from revealing it's owner/location. 100% not 99.9999%. Because one microscopic slipup and that persons life is over.

The stakes are high indeed, but so are the profits.
