Title: Rules how to give merits?
Post by: Fnrecana on March 06, 2018, 02:07:00 AM
Merits have become an important factor to rank up in this forum. What i always read is all how to earn merits and didn't notice any rules that stated how to give merits. Is there any rules about it or you can just give merits to any post that you like to spend your smerits? If there are rules about it is there any consequences to the violators? Because i think that there where some people who gives merit even in low quality post. What i have always read in post how to earn merit is to make a good quality post. Is it ok to give merit even in a low quality post? There isn't any violation with that, right?

There are no rules with regards to giving merits as long as it's constructive, meaningful or helpful to other users. It is because merits/merit sources are scarce that they have to assess who to give their merits to thus insert deserving high-quality post.

If there are rules about it is there any consequences to the violators? Because i think that there where some people who gives merit even in low quality post.

Low-quality posts should not be given merits freely, if in those cases, it is possible that users are giving merits to their alt accounts to just gain merits. This also leads to merit distribution abuse which you can investigate if there's an exchange of merits between people, etc. But with that method, it will not really last long as Smerits decreases by half everytime you send one. Also, those users must be put in the watchlist as there's a possibility of merit abuse.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

there are no rules set in stone but more like guidelines
beware... if you give merits to your alts, selling merits or anything regarded as abusing the use of merit
some DT members with no hesitate would red trust tag you  :P

Is there any rules about it or you can just give merits to any post that you like to spend your smerits?

Technically there is no rules stating about giving merit to a certain kind of post.

If there are rules about it is there any consequences to the violators?

There is no rules. If you got caught cheating the merit system then your account will either be tagged with "RED" instating something like this.
https://i.imgur.com/zvAHAwQ.png

Or get your accounts ban like them (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2998032.0).

Because i think that there where some people who gives merit even in low quality post.

Those people are merit farming and giving the merits to their alt account. Its just a matter of time, eventually they will be caught for doing such act.

What i have always read in post how to earn merit is to make a good quality post. Is it ok to give merit even in a low quality post? There isn't any violation with that, right?

Like i said, there is no rules regarding that. You can give merit points to low quality post since its a readers perspective in giving out merits. Be warned that if you that, then most likely you will be tag also. Merits system was introduce to remove and/or reduce spam from account farmers who rank and sells the accounts for the purpose of joining signature/bounty campaigns.

It would defeat the purpose of merit system if low quality post were to be given merit. Dont follow the wrong doings that you see in this forum for the sake of your own benefit. Help the forum to reduce spam and abuse in the system by reporting suspected merit farming.

you have none to give out - so I would not worry about it, spend your time reading, posting in your local board and trying to learn how to communicate in English!

Actually there's a rule that eveyone should follow.
Thou shall not merit a post that doesn't meritorious.
Thou shall not buy merit it will be tag in your DT
Thou shall not exchange merit for a certain amount of fiat
Thou shall not sell merit it will be tag in your account

That being said merit sources need to look closer to a post than normal user.
I hope I make it clear stating the normal rules we should obey according to forum history.

If you got caught cheating the merit system
If there are no rules, how can you cheat the system?

Technically, i dont see any rules regarding merit but a mere guideline on what post should be given merits. Cheating means you are abusing the merit system for self gain.

Ok thanks for the advice. Im just curious about it. Just want to know what might happen if i gain some merits and it give to others. I will read more and improve my communication skill. Thanks man. 😊

I've stated the rules everyone should follow, however it doesn't suit few members here.

there are no specific rules about giving merits, in fact, we are being encouraged to spend our smerits because it will be forfeited at a given time making it useless to keep, merits are given to a worthy post or commendable threads based on you own perspectives, if it looks informative and can be much help to the readers, then by all means spend your smerit, giving smerit on you own alt account are somehow based on conscience and honesty, there are consequences though, you can either be rejected by campaign managers or worst getting your account and all your alt accounts banned. so spend it wisely, give it to someone who really deserves it and not only to rank them up and get paid a higher rate on campaigns.

From were exactly you got that rule of yours?( please direct or link me that it came from theymos or cyrus) A self proclaimed rules like yours cant be obeyed or followed by forum members. There should be a consensus among DT member and/or mod for that of rule to be functional. If you were theymos then your words are absolute but since you are a self proclaim rule maker then your rules are trash.

As has been pointed out - there are some rules.

Don't even attempt to sell merit.
Don't exchange merit for favours.
Don't give merit to friends and family unless they deserve it.
Don't exchange merit with other members.
Don't award merit to promote sig spamming affiliates.

I have a few rules of my own.

Don't award merit to those who clog up the boards with annoying text formatting and useless images.
Don't give merit to necro-bumpers.

I don't have any authority here, so I just put offenders on ignore, and I gather other members do the same. If you break the rules, you will never get merit from merit awarders who have put you on ignore.

If you read the threads, you will see that there is a reasonable consensus about awarding merit. Some members push the envelope, but they appear to be aware they are doing it.

Im pretty much aware of what you are talking about. But please link to me on where i can see the rules that you stated(if its made by theymos). We are talking here about the rules and not a "reasonable" consensus, theres a big difference between the two. Until you can point me out if there is a consensus about the rules, then i rest my case or rather having a "reasonable" argument with you.

Unfortunately there's no general agreement prior to merit system.

However it is base on someone discretion according to forum history to left someone in the lurch with aboveboard conversation.

Or get your accounts ban like them (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2998032.0).

You likely won't be banned for merit farming but that user was banned because he has been farming hundreds if not thousands of accounts with bots in the Chinese section going on years and has already had hundreds banned, so he was banned for ban evasion but was caught or exposed because he was farming merit between his alts.

There is no rules.

I think most people will consider it cheating if you give out merit to alts for any old post. Merit is meant to be earned and was implemented to try stop farming accounts with shitposts, so I'd say just giving merit to your alts is cheating the system.

Enquiring minds want to know why this is so important to you. Do you want to breach the "rules", or do you think they should be tightened?

Its not important to me but since we are in "Rules how to get merits?" ive just answered the question that OP gave. From my understanding, there is no such rule that theymos gave in regards to giving merits, but he did gave a guideline.

I was just asking this guy on where did he get the rules that he stated and link it to me (if theymos came up with that rule).

Actually there's a rule that eveyone should follow.

Since it was a self proclaim rules theres not much weight in it.

I've stated the rules everyone should follow, however it doesn't suit few members here.

As simple as that, im just answering the question OP gave prior to my knowledge. Self proclaim rule is rather amusing.

The rule I know with regards to awarding merits is that you have to give it to a constructive post. Constructive in my opinion varies from person to person as we all have our opinions towards what constructive is. What is constructive for me may not be constructive for others because they have different standards. So I guess, the responsibility and the call of judgement would be on the ones awarding the merit. I don't think mods would question your judgement, they are concerned however with exchanging of merits or merit farming for the sake of ranking up or getting bonuses from campaigns; but if proven that you are not guilty of such act, then you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure that the merit would be justified accordingly with regards tp the post.

Nope, you don't HAVE to give merit to anyone. There is a good diversity amongst the members, and this means that reasonable/good posters stand a good chance of receiving merit from somebody here. I don't like posters who slow down my reading, so they don't get merit from me. Others seems to prefer the aesthetics of a post that is designed to be an art form. You take your chances if you think you can jazz up mediocre content with pretty formatting. :)

No one said you aren't answering O.P question.

it is not about backing up the information I also answer O.P question to the best of my knowledge without adding unnecessary opinion that could be misleading, sometimes we need to be perspectively capable of deciphering subtle meaning in a post to comprehend what it really wants to convey.

That is the beauty of the system in my opinion. Members are saying that it is hard to find others thinking on the same lines or agreeing to the post made. But since merit is not accumulated in hands of single person, everyone has fair chance with the system.  And if you are not able to impress anyone with your posts, you need to work on your posts. Sometimes it juts might be the writing skills. I have seen some members making really good posts but they do not format it well.
