Title: Interesting thought on SR closure. Post by: ksteve96 on October 08, 2013, 05:38:10 PM Ever since bitcoin has gained mainstream attention, the US federal government and news ( which I believe have a relationship ) have made a smear campaign about BTC and it's illegitimacy. Their favorite weapon of choice to shoot BTC down was mentioning that it can be used to buy illicit goods online and that it was easy to launder. I know they couldn't ignore SR, of course, but I do find it amusing that by arresting the owner and shutting down the website, they have actually further legitimized BTC, which I believe is kind of the opposite of what they really want in the end.

The press are just ignorant. Like most people they don't understand the technology and make bad assumptions based on their meager knowledge of software. But SR they can understand, and it was the most titillating aspect of bitcoin. Drugs, guns, and secret websites are just too compelling for the press.
Network news is not about getting to the bottom of a story, it is about producing something that will keep you watching through the commercials. These days that is ALL it is about. I tell people to look at the stories they read with objectivity, news is a BUSINESS not a public service.
