Post by: Jeffery Musk on March 09, 2018, 12:50:57 PM

According to that the Egyptian government is secretly siphoning off the processing firepower of its own population.

I personally don't have a problem with this as long as they're upfront about it. I'd rather do this than endure ads. I really wonder how much it can pay though.

Indeed, how much can they earn?
I lost touch with altcoins but I think they are still mining monero with that cpu power.

Maybe it will work when your audience is high specs computers like a gamer forum or video site, but I doubt people randomly picked would by a redirect would give you even a few pennies.

The worst part is this:

The hardware used to implement AdHose also doubles up as a censorship tool. It blocks access to news outlets like Al Jazeera and NGOs like Human Rights Watch.

I would be more concerned about censorship than a 10% cpu usage.

Substantially, Bitcoin has soared over the past 12 months with an increase of more than 900 percent since February 20 last year, despite major price fluctuations. Bitcoin's current price is still more than $ 8,000 from the all-time price reached in December.

I don't think the Egyptian government can do such stupid thing, maybe someone working in one of the Internet service provider companies is using his position to do so.
I can't imagine how much they can earn from that!

Indeed, the web browser mining is gaining a popularity lately due to increasing the demand in the cryptocurrency, and also the website owner has a more choice to monetize their website and mining scripts is a one of the solution instead of traditional banner ads.

Egypt is pretty poor - they have a large population, no oil and their tourist industry got trashed by all those terror attacks. So if they're using that to supplement tax, then more power to their elbow.

This just prove that cryptocurrency gradually dominated all over the world. As a crypto enthusiast, we must promote to other people by letting them to know well about cryptocurrency.
Crypto mining activity affects the speed of transaction and might the one that cause bitcoin surged. If there are lots of investors as well as miners, there is a possibility that the mining activity will rapidly change time by time.
Therefore, crypto mining activity is good because it helps the transaction mpre better and reliable.

I wonder how much percent of that comes from illegal scripts implanted into browsers as toolbar downloads or download accelerators, you know, the common free stuff.

Wouldn't even be surprised, which is sad. It's an easy way for people to make some quick cash if they'd like, and I doubt it takes up enough resources for people to even come to notice it. This'll go away soon when browsers stop it / AV notices what's happening.

This does give us a bad name though.

What this has to do with the topic started by OP ? We are discussing about crypto mining scripts  in this thread and you are posting about the increase in bitcoin prices. :)

Now coming back to the question, I know some people doing this and they told me that it can be profitable for new coins. I am not in favor of these activities though as most of the time the  end user is not informed about this and it is being done without permission. There may be legal issues if you start doing on large scale and someone is smart enough to notice this.

Thinking along the same lines, because for the most part, ads are annoying and some carry harmful files with them whenever they are clicked, so if a website says "hey, we're using some of your processing power while you're here" that would be cool and okay with me. But if they secretly injected a module that will continue mining using my processor without me even knowing, that's a different thing.

With the number of hits a popular website receives, it could well replace ads as a form of revenue, IMO.

I suppose that most of those scropts are even hidden in ads.
So you get both, the anoying advertisement and the script using your computer what you are not aware of.
It would be fair if they asked how you would want to contribute to the website you are visiting. Either by watching advertisement or by sharing computer power.

As squatz1 pointed out, this will end soon, but for now Bitcoin name is getting dirtier day by day. People are scared even from the "Bitcoin miner" name

it is still a good news for me because we need more miners to process our cryptocurrencies transactions.
if the crypto mining activity increasing, it means the miners increased too.
if there are not enough miners, the transactions process can be very slow to prcoess.

you don't understand how mining works and you also don't understand what illegally abusing other people's computing power means!

more miners doesn't mean faster transactions, and less doesn't mean slower. difficulty will adjust in PoW algorithms so that it takes the same amount of time to find a block.
as for abusing, you are not allowed to use other people's computing power without their knowledge and that is what these sites are doing, it is like running a malicious code on your computer.

If you are able to pool more resources the more power you have and the more amount of money,it is not a silly game of mining without the knowledge of the user, the people behind it are making a huge amount of profit by injecting these codes and you do not need to be having a high tech system they will just pool in your free resources which in turn will slow you down and can cause damage in the long run. If any website is running these codes they have to declare that so the users have the choice whether you will give them those opportunity to take your resources rather than stealing it.

How people can avoid that? There's a way to say that "XX" website is concealing a miner? Adblockers seems to ignore that

What a coincidence! There's this thread that has a list of those mining script blockers.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3123275.msg32293321#msg32293321

It contains of software that will stop those miners with 3 different browsers, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera.
