Title: Is there an easy way to make sure your wallet is safe on your home PC?
Post by: quantumcat on March 09, 2018, 02:52:45 PM
With the most recent hacks, this is a hot topic. We at quantum are suggesting using XMSS to secure your wallet as we consider to do with ours in our new blockchain.

What is your take on securing wallets?

This is definitely a good development. This will help to reduce the issues and incessant hacking of wallets and the stealing of people's funds. If this can work out well,i believe so many people will embrace the development.
I would like to ask if there are any demerits as regards the use of this new invention or it is 100% perfect?

Can just get a trezor or a paper wallet if you're extra paranoid.

A little bit investment doesn't cost so much if you compare it with the loosing of your portfolio by the hacker. Hardware wallets like the ledger and trezor are very recommendable. I am also afraid of the possible attempts of the hackers to steal my portfolio.

People are sometimes losing their portfolio because of the mistakenly giving their private keys but in the case, you own the hardware wallet the transaction need to confirm on it if you have it in the standalone version or even if you have connected some other wallet like electrum to it.

I think it's safe to use Electrum, because there is almost no one who has heard about the use of Electrum wallet to replace the bitcoin.
Even if the Electrum wallet is flawed, it will soon be fixed.

Yeah, I have the same opinion on that. Why doesn't people understand it's simple to protect your wallet? Also we can use removable hard drive and keep the wallet there.

Nah, bugs always happening in almost every software. In recent attack, hackers successfully hacked Electrum through bugs and immediately asked everyone to upgrade to latest updates to avoid your funds get stolen. I'd rather to have backup rather than stay in one place.

I'm not an expert in cyber security but Quantum claims to be a "cryptographic secure network". Bitcoin is also secure, no one hacked its blockchain yet. But when it comes you your home PC then everything is in your hands and any 3rd parties will hardly make it more secure. For better safety you can install Linux, that's gona be the most eficient move.
If you are going to save your keys to flash drive like lakimens offered then it is still not that safe. Sooner or later you will have to plug it in your PC and if it is compromised then you may lose your keys. In such cases it is better to use hardware wallets.

I agree with you, keeping them in flash drive is not secure or wise thing, if you plug them in computers then there is no difference keeping it on computer. Hardware wallets are the only safe ones for now.

Setup a ledger nano s hardware wallet on a fresh windows 10 PC should be secure enough for you to survive almost all crypto hacks. However, you do need to be careful about phishing sites.

Yes use that ol noodle of yours and memorize the words. Easier said than done and if you ever forget a word you are toast, that is probably why the safer bet is a paper wallet. Can't go wrong with those, all you need to do is protect it from fire and water.

Yeah, use a separate computer or OS for storing your coins in. With how easy it is to get hacked, you cant take your coins security lightly since your money is on the line. Also its not too hard to store your coins on a separate OS.

Better print it on a good paper then. Too bad that there is no printer ink that can beat pencils when it comes to preserving text.

Protect your computer with antivirus and use a hardware wallet, it should be quite safe. And most importantly, be careful of phishing and always double check the website address and wallet address you are intending to visit or send
coins to.

Nope, keys on an usb are subject to potential loss of information as well. Do paper wallet, break in two pieces, store in bank safes. Then keep also the usb.

Just use metamask extension so that your browser will be prompt when you are entering a potential phishing sites, install decent anti virus and malwarebytes so that you will be protected from these hackers, also use hardwallets because these wallets are the most secured even if your computer is already infected there is no way to steal your private keys.

I bought hardware wallet (my choice is trezor) for everyday payments. I guess 2-factor auth will always win vs any security actions with regular wallet.

go for a paper wallet or or any cold storage.. send transaction offline and when you will connect to internet all transactions will be automatically processed... but concept of your wallet is also good..

Install on USB, throw USB in some dark hole. PROTECTED.

Actually if you want to be 100% sure, you need to do/take few more precautions:

1. You need to be offline

2. And again - being offline while you are creating and saving your wallet.

3. Without going online, low format all computer drives after the wallet creation.

The easiest way to do it, is to make a full mirror of your HDD/SSD before going offline and wallet creation, then format all and then restore the mirror.

Sad but true, air gap is the safest way.

Security in the crypto world is very important. I think that you should have a separate device to store and work with crypto. And it should belong only to you. Don't let children play on this device)) Install good antivirus, antimalware soft and use reliable VPN services.

If you want it to be really secure and hack free buy a cheap laptop then keep it offline. Put a tough login password so even your wife will not be able to access it. Just connect it online when you are ready to sell.

You can use paper wallet and hardware wallet I think mostly safe it is. if you use coinbase blockchain then also you need to always activated your two-factor authentication system via mobile phone number and access via e-mail address.

If you are using PC on your home and don't trust people who are using it with you then just create an admin for you and put a hard to guess password, for the other user then create guest files for them to use. As to keep your wallet safe while opening it to sites, then use bookmark to keep you safe.

Anybody having a physical access to your machine can compromise it in 5-10 mins.

Don't fool yourself about any admin and non-admin passwords. Just check Google and Youtube.
