Title: Received Nano Ledger S from France, Questions
Post by: jerry0 on March 09, 2018, 04:37:51 PM
I just got the nano ledger s at the moment.  Ordered it from the actual website so it was sent from france to here.  Had it expedited as well shipping.  I noticed that it is actually wrapped in packaging as in you need to rip it open or take a scissor etc.  Do you know if this is new?  I heard from others there is nothing over it and its suppose to come with just the box?  But those are only ppl who got it off amazon right?  So the ones that come from france does have it in closed packaging like imagine you bought a new iphone and you have to rip off that plastic packaging?

I ordered mine straight from the website and iirc it did come in a shrink-wrapped box. However, Ledger does not use a tamper-proof seal, because the hardware does the tamper checking.

This is correct. You can read more information about their security here: https://www.ledger.fr/2015/03/27/how-to-protect-hardware-wallets-against-tampering/ (https://www.ledger.fr/2015/03/27/how-to-protect-hardware-wallets-against-tampering/).

Also ensure that when you set up the Ledger, you generate a new PIN and 24 word seed phrase, to avoid any second-hand scams as seen here: https://www.ledger.fr/2018/01/12/scam-second-hand-ledger-device/ (https://www.ledger.fr/2018/01/12/scam-second-hand-ledger-device/).

Can confirm I just ordered two last month directly from ledgerwallet.com (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/r/0091) and they came with the shrink wrap.

I ordered direct from Ledger. If I remember rightly it was not shrink wrapped but this was a long time ago. The actual packaging or the seal is irrelevant when it comes to Ledgers. It's all in the machines.

It's the people who order from elsewhere and get a pre installed seed and a card who don't know what they're doing who have to worry.

I have bought from Ledger and I confirm it has arrived in wrapped packaging. I bought from the official website ledgerwallet.com (http://ledgerwallet.com).

You should be suspicious when you buy from Ebay or Amazon as you the seller may have changed the firmware and packaging. That is why it is always advised to buy from the official producer when you buy a hardware wallet.

This is something you should be worried about if you buy from anyone else than Ledger. In Your case you're safe and no need to worry. If we can't trust the original manufacturer then we shouldn't buy it :/
