Title: Knc vs Butterfly
Post by: barwizi on October 13, 2013, 09:01:46 AM
Is it better to blow 5 grand on the supposed november shipping for KNC or to order the PCI-e Butterfly labs item? Considering how long it took butterfly labs, then i haven't seen or heard of a working KNC miner, it leaves me uneasy to invest. Last time i used the wait and see approach, it worked, didn't order and i used that money to make more from scrypt clones.

what do ya'llz think?

KNC miner have better records and better deal, just don't go near butterfly labs or you will be doomed.

As an alternative you can buy Hash from cex.io (https://cex.io/r/1/fattypig/0/) (referral link) :)

OUCH!

On topic, KnC has some delivery and hardware hiccups. Given their development cycle, I expected it to be worse. I think that if you were ordering right now, they would probably deliver your units on time. The first lot, they did far better than I expected, and a bit worse than they were hoping for. So far, as near as I can tell, they have shipped around 700 units, most a week or so behind schedule.

By comparison, as of a few weeks ago BFL was still several months behind their initial pre-orders. I really don't think the two companies compare well. KnC seems legit, but have let their pride in initial accomplishment blind them to some of the more mundane realities of doing business. Understandable, and frustrating for their early adopters, but still a good company. BFL has dropped the ball, kicked the can, obfuscated, delayed, and often outright lied for most of their history. On integrity alone, I would not do business with them. I would only buy a BFL rig if it were through a third party in person, with the rig in hand. From everything I've heard, despite their Kirby Vacuum style of marketing, they do have good hardware once they get around to building it.

My .002 BTC :)

I would wait & watch Bitmine & maybe Blackarrow, lower power consumption per GH & by Nov-Dec,lower prices  ;)

And you'll have a better idea about the network speed  :o  6 Petahash by 1st quater 2014 is possible..................

Why not use that 5k $ to just buy bitcoin?

I can't answer for everyone, obviously, but to me, the fun of the hardware and exploration.

It's also a long term bet on the transactional side of BTC. Even though I know that I will not see positive ROI in a short timeframe, I still want to do it. Only reason I haven't is that I don't yet have the spare cash.

barwizi:

You order a Butterfly in June 2012, you get it in April 2013.  10 months.
Your order a KnC in June 2013, you get it in October 2013.  4 months.
Butterfly is still shipping orders from March 2013 today, so they're still 3 months behind KnC.

KnC's next batch will be out next month, so it's probably first half of December at worst.
BFL claims to be shipping the Monarch in quantity in January, so if you order today, you'll get in February 2014 at best.
Difficulty is increasing 30% every 11 days or so, and probably won't slow down because of upcoming shipping skeds of all other companies, so you're looking at a 270% increase in difficulty between the time you would get a KnC and the time you would get a Monarch.  You also need to add in the 180% difficulty increase from now until the first week of December for your KnC calculations.

You're probably still better off mining scrypt. :-)

I would be asking the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th largest mining pools, are they expanding? in need of more miners? what are their short term plans? 1 - 3 yr range.

Don't forget.....BFL is ALWAYS off on power targets,by at least 3 times & shipping targets, like you mentioned,my bet ?? BFL won't ship the Monarch's till June or 2nd quater 2014 at earliest  ::)

I will go with bitmine desk or even rig, they also offer an upgrade modules and with price lowering, you'll easy upgrade on speed ...

Buying mining hardware right now is stupid and will just cost you money. Wait for when the exponential increase in difficulty levels off (not gonna happen this year) and then decide to purchase your miner. It's still risky, but it will have a much better chance of earning you back your money. In my opinion both KNC and BFL are not the ideal companies to buy from, BFL speaks for themselves but KNC is also not as professional as they make themselves appear to be. Bitfury is easily the best company that delivers right now, and companies like Cointerra/Bitmine/Blackarrow seem nice but still have to proof themselves. All the more reason to wait and see how this all pans out, right now it's all one big losing gamble.

My problem with Cointerra & KnC & others is they offer nothing in my price range, less than $3000(include shipping).Main reason I'm watching Bitmine & Blackarrow so closely  ;)

BA offers units for around $300 for 100GH,Bitmine's units start at $1500  :D

Just wait & see shit is killing me  :D

I wonder how Josh and the rest are getting their belongings out of town.  Can't use moving vans, people would notice.  I'm guessing a lot of cargo van deliveries.

How do they determine which poor bastard is the last one out?   Or do the employees just show up one day and the doors are locked?  Or maybe the doors are left open.

Does the FAA make flight plans public?  Josh plus six suitcases of paper wallets holding other people's BTC can probably make it about 1500 miles in his flying machine.
