Title: Radeon 6950 and underclocking ?
Post by: Beta-coiner1 on July 22, 2011, 08:23:01 PM
I was wondering if any of you guys have successfully underclocked the memory of the 6950.Does the bios lock out underclocking of the memory as I seem to be only able to overclock ?

The temps are great but the sound of the fans are a bit too audible for my liking and know I can push the hardware a little more since it is next to the air conditioner lol.

Why do you want to underclock it?

^^Not sure how long you have been mining, but after reading the forum and doing my own testing you will find that memory speeds are not much of a factor when it comes to mining BTC or NC.The many benefits are lower electricity consumption by far,~10 C temp. drop and it allows more overclock on the core for better rates.

If you're on windows, use MSI afterburner. you'll need to enable unofficial overclocking. Then use the open close trick to drop the mem speed to around 400 on a 6950.

Lower mem speed = less heat = faster hashrate (like up to 5mhs)

If you're on linux, you'll need to use something else.

^^Thanks for that,I find it very strange that the MSI product work but even the official CCC doesn't...weird.It now works though and thanks,I will definitely be keeping this proggie around.
