Are you kidding? I'd be surprised if 0.1-0.2% of internet users even know what bitcoin is.

Blockchain tells about 500k wallet users.

Then there is 25 million transactions total... Which sufficiently large part is probably satoshi dice and others.

Couldn't find info on unique addresses in chain.

But my estimate would be around 5M max...


Which is the 0.2% of 2 400 000 000 internet users in 2012...

And that would be upper end of one time users... The real count is probably lower...

Rather than percentage, I am a bit more curious about how many people actually use Bitcoin.
My guess is it's not even exceed 10.000.000 people..

Number of addresses in the UXTO (Unspent Transaction Output Set). I couldn't find it either, but I would like to know.

That seems a good ballpark figure....1% have heard about it, maybe 1 in 100 of those may have tried using bitcoin or at least downloaded a client.  Of course that is just guesswork on my part.

Around 0.000071% - but that's a generous estimate.. in fact less than 185k people (not much more than the number of registered users on the bitcointalk forum - currently 151k) hold as much as 1BTC. The total number of keys holding 1BTC or more is currently ~223k however around 35k of those keys are the satoshi wealth (unmoved 50BTC coinbases). There's a report on my site; http://www.klmist.com/keysreport.html that updates daily showing the number of keys holding various amounts. I think it's fair to say that almost everyone who uses bitcoin is registered on bitcointalk.

0.00001%, even 1% is enough for Bitcoin to hit $1000. If you compare to the world, Bitcoin is really small :)

1% of the world would be about 70-million people.  With only 21 million bitcoin that comes out to about 1/3 of bitcoin each person on average.  So it is possible you could be quite well off if you hold even a small number of bitcoin.

The big road block right now is barrier to entry.  When anybody can use bitcoin as easily as using the Internet or a credit card (or nearly as easily) without fear or specialized knowledge, adoption can really move forward at an even faster pace than now (which is still very fast)

How about China?

A lot of those registered accounts are bots or sockpuppets/scammers, the true number of accounts is probably like 10% of that, and that's being generous. Each scammer probably has at least a dozen accounts.

And don't forget that most people involved in Bitcoin are either miners or investors hoping to get rich, which is why most threads on this forum are about how to make/earn more of them or what the price is/should be.

No-one has ever been able show actual stats for 'real' transactions involving BTC, but my guess is that when gambling or silk road is excluded then the number is very tiny indeed.

The real problem is that it's not clear that for many people that Bitcoin actually offers any real advantages for transactions, other than limited examples of international P2P transfers. BTC transactions aren't free (miners fees and costs of buying/selling Bitcoins), aren't anonymous and all parties take substantial risk of price deviation if any element involves any currency other than BTC.

I think bitcoin's #1 advantage is the fact that it's not owned by any corporation or bank. That in itself makes bitcoin more desirable.

Plus it has first mover advantage.

that made me lol hard.  I think lots of people have "heard" of bitcoin, most ppl i talk to have.  I've yet to meet someone irl who uses bitcoins, other than ppl i've talking into holding a few.  I'd say its very small still, but growing rapidly. 

I'm busy on a research with this question. Just have some patience on the outcome.

Woah, 10% of all internet users? That's insane man, I don't think more than 2% of internet users use bitcoin, and that's still a very large guess. You have to remember the internet is huuuge.

I'd imagine it to be a very small amount, like 0.1 / 0.001 % maybe but that's a complete guestimate.

Would be interesting to know the average amount of wallets each bitcoiner has, personally had at least ten different blockchain wallets, not that I'm a scammer  ;D

2 % also.
I guess even 0.2 or 0.1 % is also to much.
None of my Internet friends use actively bitcoin and just a few even heard about it  and I really have a lot friends online.
Any way, you have to look atr it from different perspective.

Bitcoin is still at very early stage very fare from becoming mainstream.

Last I heard it was 0.1% of the population, that would make it around 7 million people.

It's quite a bit lower than that still but in the same order of magnitude.

We aren't even close to 1% yet, that number would be amazing. Sadly the number is small but is growing with time, as more and more merchants start accepting BTC more people know about it.

I think a very little percentage.But one day bitcoins will be a normal for everyone for online transactions as PayPal is for eBay. It I'd a genius exchange.

I think the actual number of people that use bitcoin is low compared to the number
that have heard about it but for whatever reason doesn't get involved. I think we have .01%
right? Not very many...

I think he have ~2 million users so if the value above is correct that would imply 0.03%.

Yeah It is lower than 1% and It's kind of cool that we are ones of that 1% :) But if ebay would start accepting bitcoin imagine how much % It will grow up, and for now only we know little internet "secret" which is called Bitcoin, kind of cool :} Sad that we can't take any advantages of Bitcoin now because at least I miss bitcoin price train =/

There is so many problems buying bitcoin even with this low percentage of users,

now just imagine how would banks react if the percentage of bitcoin users would be 10-15 %

We are still early adopters, but that doesnt mean that the price of 500ish USD per bitcoin is justified, given that there is still so many opened questions and concerns.

The only one who made research public based on data is Risto and that's what he got as a result if I recall correctly. For a large part it was based on the leaked MtGox database.

Who knows? Maybe 1 percent? Or two?

Not enough  ;D. If Paypal and Ebay get on board, that could go up consideranbly tho.
