Post by: tytanick on October 14, 2013, 11:07:13 PM
Hello guys,

I have 25 years old Linux admin and PHP programmer.
I am not homeless or deadly sick or something like that (only having some depression problems:P but anyway...)
I came up with idea with rising fund that would give me chance to recover my 92 stolen BTC

My story of stolen 92BTC
This is pretty anoying and sad.
I have earned those 92 BTC by trading diablo 3 gold and also mining on GPUs.
Anyway i had those BTC on my mtgox.com account and unfortunatley it has been hacked (propobly by leaked md5 password sums as mony others)
I reported this imidietly to mtgox support and they couldnt help me because transfer was already sent, they suggested to report this incident to police.
I did report to police in my country Poland but after few months the trace is gone. Polish police could not helped me.
Transfer of stolen BTC's is here - you can follow where it went: https://blockchain.info/address/17hdCukYXEErDzEmp4jLiaWZpL7fsFYCKC

What i am trying to do:
I want someone to help me catch hacker and get my money back. Meaby hacker is already captured and i could get my btc back ?
I also want you guys if you have good heart and some BTC to spare - please donate BTC to my special account. Unfortunatley moderator doesnt like this ....

POOL
Please take a vote in my pool thread "Should MtGox give me back stolen 92BTC from their exchange ?":
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=310919.0

Unfortunatley moderator: BadBear https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=41911 is deleting my pool !

It was in 2012 (15 czerwca = June 15), you can also see it in the blockchain.info link provided by OP, and the report is from 17/07/2012.

The report looks legit to me in case anyone's having doubts.

Tytanick, can you tell us what response did you get from the police in regards to this theft? What kind of effort did they undertake to investigate this theft?
I'm having a hard time believing they did anything considering the fact that the Polish police is understaffed and usually not very tech-savvy unless there's political pressure...

I wouldn't really count on getting even a fraction of those money back, and definitely not after 14 months but good luck nonetheless.

I had somewere response document from the police, but i cant really find it.
anyway theh said something that they cant find this "hacker" and thats it....
I've even contacted mtgox and gave them my police case number but nothing happened.
Case is closed ......

I tried to find hacker myself because mtgox mail showed me ip of hacker: 178.215.199.188
I also contacted ISP company of this ip but they told me only that i can contact police because they wont tell me anything about person using that ip.
Anyway i suppose that this was proxy ip anyway ....

No 2FA and using mt gox as a web wallet, you deserved it. This is a lesson and you will never do that again and you will now invest more time in security.

Also you have skills instead of asking for donations go and hustle and get jobs in the community and earn it back, you could earn 92 BTC pretty quickly with your job skill and a good price point.

security lesson learned.
My skill is pretty nice and i have my own company.
But still 92 BTC is pretty big cash here in Poland - we are like a 3td part country compared to sweeden :D
And about donation part i said do myself, why not, i will post my case and see what happens - i wont loose anything so its worth trying :)

Anyway, thx all for donations, i have to go sleep. Bye !

Bitcoin is like silver or gold.

If you don't hold it in hand (the bitcoin equivalent being, your own server/wallet.dat file, private key securely kept, etc), you don't really hold it.

Web wallets are just as good as paper metal - totally worthless.

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

This is a harsh lesson. Many refuse to learn it until they've been dropped into the frying pan.

OP, you've been dropped in the frying pan. Be thankful that it was only 92 bitcoins and learn to properly secure your assets in the future. The world is full of people who won't hesitate to steal from their own mother. You must protect yourself.

Others reading this post, please try to understand the mistakes the OP has made, and learn from them. Secure your private keys. This means that you are the only person in the world who is capable of accessing those private keys. There is a wealth of knowledge available for those who bother to seek it. Bitcoins are one of the easiest assets on the planet to secure. You don't need to pay for insurance. You don't need elaborate security systems. You don't need an expensive safe. You don't need to pay someone else to do it for you. All you need is the knowledge which you can acquire in about 2-3 hours. A few key things to search for: offline wallets, cold storage, paper wallets.
cold storage is only trustable method in my opinion

I'm just curious why you've never mentioned this before...

You have a gap in your posting history from June 30 2011 till February 18 2013.  It's a little odd to me that you're saying this happened June 15 2012.

EDIT:
Just looked again and realized it was mentioned on February 18 2013.  I'm guessing this was either a bought or hacked account though.

If you have your own company then you'll be able to get back up on your feed sooner or later! no need to ask people to give 92 btc!

I don't what the terms of service says, but it seems to me that the stolen coins were held by MtGox and not you, so it was their coins that were stolen and not yours. You still have a right to your money.

I have feeling this only goes so far as in if you are a dumbass to not use the proper security we offer to secure your coins then the fault lies with you. I'm just going out on a limb there.

I don't think that's ever going to happen. The OP could always be on the lookout though, I guess.

There's a way to figure out if BTC were deposited into a site like Silk Road. I read a article about it on Forbes where they were able to find this out, but they said it would be harder if you didn't know what you were looking for, but still possible. After that you would have to message the business and prove to them that the coins were stolen, which is next to impossible if it was a year ago. Even if it wasn't, you'd have a hard time getting anything out of them. Your best bet is to figure out where the coins were deposited to be sold (if anywhere) and then contact the business for any information they have on the account holder. Good luck.

The police report seems to be legit and has words "Bitcoin" and "MtGox" so why are the mods intercepting his post
