Title: Bitcoin Black Friday - Let's spend those hoarded bitcoins!
Post by: JonHolmquist on October 15, 2013, 10:38:50 PM
Hello Bitcoiners!

Bitcoin Black Friday officially launches on Nov. 29th.

This is the second annual event. We had a Bitcoin Black Friday last year and had about 75 participating merchants. Here's a rundown of Bitcoin Friday results from last year. http://codinginmysleep.com/bitcoin-friday-results/

Everyone had a great day... Let's do it again, but bigger!

This year we're aiming to get 500 (Yes, I said 500) merchants signed up and offering deals on their websites ONLY for Bitcoin users ONLY on November 29th.

For those of you who didn't participate last year, Bitcoin Friday is a one day sale two weeks before the great American pre-holiday sale: Black Friday. It is a chance to prove a couple things:

  • Bitcoin is not only used for buying drugs. Huge this year with all the news coverage of the Silk Road closure.
  • People will spend bitcoins, and not only hoard them.
  • That the Bitcoin community treasures its Bitcoin merchants and appreciates their work and contribution to the Bitcoin economy.

Last year we had a couple spontaneous Bitcoin Friday parties erupt (looking at you Bitcoin Kiez and Room77 ;)). This year Bitcoin Friday will hopefully be sending packages of goodies (from BF participating merchants!) to groups that host Bitcoin Black Friday parties. Think Bitcoin Friday t-shirts, Alpaca socks, and other Bitcoin-related items. If you're interested in hosting a BBF party, let me know over PM. I'll be promoting this portion of Bitcoin Black Friday more in the next week.

So, I'd love some feedback on how the project has developed, please reply below with suggestions for this year's sale!

If you're interested in signing up for an alert when the sale begins, or listing as a merchant (it's free!) go to our website: http://BitcoinBlackFriday.com

I know, I met a lot during the European BitCoin Convention and I would gladly set one up. I just don't have the funds, nor the time, nor the skills required to do such a thing :P

Is there a Facebook group or event? If someone makes one I can join and invite over 1,000 people :)
And maybe the people there don't have BTC, but they may want to join in and buy some that day.

When will http://bitcoinfriday2013.com/ be updated?

I can't spam this link without causing confusion and saying Nov 29th when the website says Nov 15th.

I'll save my forum/chat spamming for tomorrow night :)  I'll get an extra hour of night to throw this link out there!

This will be a major stress test on the bitcoin network.

Good luck on the event.

Maybe we should get everyone that isn't buying anything on that day to send bitcoins to another one of their wallets.

We need to boost the number of transactions per day to make it look like bitcoin is popular.

Then and only then will they take bitcoin enthusiasts seriously.

I believe that we can offer the best prices on a lot of consumer electronics such as mobile phones, cameras etc. We can also offer fast relatively cheap shipping to a whole bunch of different countries. Just keep in mind that they will be imported so your government may charge import duties/taxes. These aren't applicable in the US, Australia and some smaller countries. Check here (http://dutycalculator.com/) if you're not sure regarding taxes.

you can buy amazon vouchers for devcoins:

Devcoins are cheap right now relative to other coins (they haven't gone up as much). Instead of spending your bitcoins, switch one of the alts with no merchants into devcoin and get some amazon vouchers.

I hope Bitcoin Black Friday is a success!  Is there anyway to analyze the blockchain to know for sure?

Do retailers typically convert to fiat when coins are spent?  Trying to time my next bitcoin entry -- trying to buy the dips, but there are no dips  :-\

Not normally a fan of this type of consumerism, but to me this is more about demonstrating to the world the growing power of bitcoin.  My GF and I reviewed the vendors listed at:

http://www.bitcoinblackfriday.com

We will be buying:

1. Coffee (http://bitbrew.net (http://bitbrew.net))
2. Honey caramels and regular honey (http://www.beesbros.com/store-for-bitcoins.html (http://www.beesbros.com/store-for-bitcoins.html))
3. Fancy loose-leaf green tea (http://tealet.com/bitcoinblackfriday (http://tealet.com/bitcoinblackfriday))
4. Sexy lollypops (http://www.lollyphile.com (http://www.lollyphile.com))
5. Amazon and Target "gyft" cards (http://www.gyft.com/bitcoin/ (http://www.gyft.com/bitcoin/))
6. 1/4 oz gold eagle (http://www.amagimetals.com/gold/fractional (http://www.amagimetals.com/gold/fractional))
7. A bitcoin T-shirt from one of the many vendors.

Last year BitPay did 99 transactions on Bitcoin Black Friday (and that was the record at the time).  It will be interesting to see how much we have grown.

gyft.com is offering 4 points per dollar on black friday, so 1 day deal only. i might make another order on coinbase and then trasfer it over there just for the hell of it. paying the exchange fee will probably negate any savings, but i don't mind.. it's just me helping move BTC around.

I'm planning on doing most of my holiday shopping today with bitcoin.

Who's with me?

We will be doing most of our Christmas shopping with bitcoin tomorrow.  We will be traveling with our new smartphones (paid with bitcion) trying to do our shopping and answering the Bees Brothers emails.

Never a dull moment with bitcoin!

Jon - please hire someone (serious here) to get the press involved in this.  Someone needs to gather the numbers for sales, or something, so that the press can write articles on this.  You're probably way ahead of me on this, but the press is writing about Bitcoin Black Friday - so they're going to go nuts if we can give them a dollar amount spent and number of merchants - maybe even number of purchases / people who participated.  This will be *huge* press for Bitcoin, and i would hire someone to contact every store that participated, and every press outlet possible (maybe put a notice on the website home page) ... to get the articles out there.

I realize this is short notice, but im hoping someone will consolidate this information on the sales and participants and help get the public aware of what went down!

Huge press opportunity for success of Bitcoin.  Very important!

And where does it say that LiteCoin can handle more transactions then Bitcoin? It doesn't matter that LiteCoin has "faster" transaction. It needs to have more confirmations then Bitcoin before it gets accepted.

EDIT: Changing your post and removing the Litecoin part doesn't help.

Well if noone ever spends their bitcoin then the overall bitcoin economy will not prosper which will lead to a long term lower value for your bitcoin that you have hoarded.

There is NO "bitcoin economy", if everything is being instantly converted to fiat. Once businesses close the goddamn loop and pay suppliers, employees, rent in BTC, THEN there will be a bitcoin economy.

Are you doing any deals this year? Then again, It would have to be a massive discount to get me to spend my coins at the moment. I just can't bring myself to spend them at current value. Feel like I'd be losing money if I did. Maybe this time next year will be different.

Sign up is on there too.

Some deals are already in and they're insane. Up to 90% off at one tshirt retailer. Some of our bigger merchants are doing more discounts than they did last year too.

We are. Most of our repeat customers replace their BTC as they spend them, though I do understand your sentiment. Unfortunately the exchange rate last year was much more ecommerce friendly.

Tbh honest my local currency isn't doing too good atm. But I think Bitcoin still has some more low supports to test
