A large illegal facility for mining bitcoin was discovered by police in the Russian city of Orenburg. The farm has been set up on the premises of an abandoned factory. The masterminds of the crypto project have stolen electricity worth 60 million rubles. They risk years of imprisonment.

One of Russia’s Biggest
Investigating unusual consumption of electricity, police in the Russian city of Orenburg came across one of the largest facilities for cryptocurrency mining in the country. The unknown miners have illegally set up their farm in a closed-down plant, plugging the cables into the nearby transformer station.

In what Russian media described as “a scene from The Matrix”, investigators found racks upon racks of mining processors. The farm was equipped with powerful application specific circuits, and not the ordinary video cards, used by amateur miners.

That is a lot of stolen electricity and for sure the people that operated these mining farms are for sure rich as hell now!

Really incredible story,in a short video we can actually see how large was this operation. What is really weird is that somebody noticed this after who knows how much time. That could mean that miners had some help from local authorities, and as no one has been caught for now, they seem to have been notified that their operation is coming to the end.

I'm sure this whole project it is not the work of some amateurs, they spent a lot of money and time to do this.Probably someone was dissatisfied over his share of profit, that's how it goes in Russia.

Extremely large amount of money for sure. A miner isn't cheap. Though I don't think it flew under the radar that easily. For sure it had some connections that would have prevented its discovery. Those guys would have probably profited a shit ton from this, as electricity accounts for like half of the cost of operating the whole thing aside from the cost of hardware.

To set something up like that would've taken an extremely substantial amount of outlay all of which could be blown by one dog walker wandering in. Why not go fully legit and continue for years?

I guess the local police are going into the mining business now. Good luck to 'em.

good question, and another pertinent question would be: why did they take so long to find out? I do not believe that an electricity company has not realized that there is a certain place where energy consumption is abnormal. So my suspicion is that this may be some kind of political persecution, maybe this business belongs to someone from the opposition political party and as retaliation the ruling party decided to take revenge.

They are small fish, they have no conditions to do such a thing.

in the video they do not show much, which seems to me like a political advertisement
