Title: help settle a debate?
Post by: leath08 on March 14, 2018, 05:40:23 PM
Lets say both your parents are Irish, and you were born in England.
Are you Irish or English?
This question can apply to any country, just want to know what peoples views are might settle a debate I'm having.

If you are looking at this from the side of "law" child born in England is English. BUT! If you are just born there, but you are growing up in Ireland and you get used to Irish culture you can easily say you are Irish. You cannot define it just by saying where you were born unless you are applying for a passport or other important documents. It's up to you to be honest. You cannot settle this like that unless you are in the court :)

English with Irish heritage.

But it depends if you live there and consider yourself 1st or 2nd generation.

From a legal perspective you are English! I think what makes a lot of debates like these is that sometimes people just want to be different and stand out, and being born in a country they're accustomed to will make them choose to be "Irish" in whatever scenario applies lol
