Title: Your favorite stablecoin??
Post by: jack107 on March 17, 2018, 11:50:08 PM
Been seeing a lot of talk about stablecoins lately like this article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/shermanlee/2018/03/12/explaining-stable-coins-the-holy-grail-of-crytpocurrency/#432e3ce84fc6

What do you guys think about them? My personal favorite would be Havven since they're not pegged to fiat or gold and is trustless.

I'm not a fan of these fixed conversion rate coin/token like Tether. The same with LTU_btc, I always prefer my own local fiat currency if I want a "stable" status for my investments (PHP).
Also, AFAIK there's no local exchanger for them that's why it could take a longer process for real life usage. (Ex. bitcoin -> Tether -> if I need php / instead of bitcoin -> php )

Nothing turns back with stable coins. Crypto's nature is pumps and dumps. There were the real profit is seen. If the crypto is stable, then i would prefer my own local fiats then a stable coin. And if all crypto coins are going to have a stable value, I don't think everyday we would have a new ICOs coming in and more investors falling in crypto market. So fluctuation in price is the main source of crypto's growth.

I had some interest for Tether, but I have seen some negative speculation about that, so I didn't look for that anymore. The nearest Crypto-Currency to stability that I reach now is DogeCoin. Not so stable, but at least well known already to know it's not a farse and that there isn't anything behind it.

theres no such thing as stable coins when were talking about cryptocurrency because every single crypto is intedly made to be a volatile coin. we dont need stability because we cant just posibly earn a profit if all of the coins became stable. you should better convert your coins to usd or any local currency in order to avoid the dangers of being a volatile. usdt is also good alternative in order to secure your profits from constant fluctuations.

Won't be the first crypto/token to attempt a pegged currency. Tether's dominance might have showed the way to all these projects but its spectacular failings should also present a strong case for saying that they simply don't work and cannot be sustainable.

Volatility is probably something that can't be avoided with something so new. It will take many, many years for bitcoin to mature as a "store of value" - this volatility will always be there for as long as the majority of bitcoin and crypto users continue to see it first as an investment asset and as a speculatory trading commodity. The same patterns can always be seen with new currencies. I myself was very familiar with using one of the world's newest fiat in the South Sudanese pound. It was enforced as a means of payment but ultimately fell victim to trading speculation, with people still preferring to use other currencies, even preferring bartering to paying/receiving it.

Changes value every minute is the only constant in crypto currencies, well my best token right now is Ethereum, it's very useful as a gas in my wallet.

I'm not really sure there is a stable coin I fully trust at the moment. There are a couple that I believe are relatively promising but its the issue with scaling that doesn't seem to be any closer to being solved. The liquidity needed to be a secure stable coin that could potentially support the market will be absolutely huge!

Coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum and highly volatile.

That’s true, but is it disadvantage for an investors. Nope, volatility is one of the assets of bitcoin and ethereum. Buying on dip and selling on a higher price within the week will give you more profit than an stable market price that would last for a month or two. It is risky, but the higher the risk also means higher the profit.

people do trading with crypto and also people usually want to get profit from buy the particular coins such as bitcoin or ETH and some of them are very liked volatility because they able to buy at the lower price and sell at the high price and unfortunately volatility always be a part of cryptocurrencies so i'm not really sure people will liked stable coin

Exactly.
Besides, who need stable coins when you can make profit out of unstable coins  ;D

This is the exactly same point which hit my mind because we all are here for earning and learning new features of the crypto currency and we really do not want the market to get stable. The stable market is already available in the form of Dollars, Pounds, and Euros etc with bare minimum fluctuations but we have opted for the crypto so that with more fluctuations we can get the chance to earn more in the market with lower level of risks.

I really think havven is the best out of all of them. The Havven platform uses two tokens to achieve stability.

The havven token provides the collateral for the platform. Nomin tokens (stablecoin) are issued against the value of the collateral token. This dual token approach incentivizes users to hold havven tokens because network transaction fees are paid to havven holders. As more people use nomins for everyday transactions, the value of havven tokens will increase due to the higher fees generated.

I recommend everyone to read into this because it really is very interesting. https://havven.io/

This system is way better than trusting what tether is doing with them being so centralized.

It's funny to see that someone is able to pay an article writer just to advertise these coins for his own benefit. I'm not familiar with these "stable coins" but only tether. It can be stable for now but time will come that this can be one of the most frustrating coin or it can be one of the best. We all know that crypto coins are volatile.

Can not agree more.

The most stable-coin is USD.  If you consider the so called "stable", why do you think about investing crypto coins? You should keep your USD.

USD is not even a coin, is it? It is a real fiat money, cant be called as a coin although most big exchanges let the users to trade USD-Crypto Coins.
I also wondering what is the point of using stable coins like what OP talking about? When we are talking about investing/trading then stable coins = zero profit. I think stable coin is useless at the moment.

There used to be one and only stable coin until the end of 2015, it was litecoin who stabilized at around 4$, it never went down or up more then 10% and was under huge manipulations, now-days, beside Tether which is being backed by the US dollar, I don't think there isn any stable cryptocurrency.
More then that, Tether is not too stable as bitfinex is under investigation to check if they really own the funds to back the tether, if they are found to like about their USD reserve, then tether will be worth nothing as it won't be backed up by anything.

We cannot say that there is a stable coin.In cryptocurrency we have no assurance in any coins unless they had a good stabilization and good developement in the market. We all know that they are flactuating and still volatile any moment they can be gone because nothing is permanent in this world.

My money is on Havven. ICO sold out in 90 minutes and raised $30M beating Power ledger as an australian-based company for amount raised. There is huge demand for something like this. Their system is the only one that makes sense. I see too many stablecoins try to stabilize the price while tying themselves to something that's not stable----> USD or gold. What a joke.

Lots to anticipate especially for mass adoption. these are going to pave the way for that movement.

Bitcoin is not stable coin since its go with the series of pump and dump schemes which truly love by traders. But you could look the monero since for me that is the most stable coin so far and yet potential one to be hold with. And I would rather search for new potential ICO coins with working platform right now since those are the new thrend and maybe there's one of them would pump more harder in future.

I dont think there is a stable coin in the market. If you look at charts nowadays almost all cryptocurrencies are flactuating. Cryptocurrency is very volatile, no one can predict when will it rise or drop its price. Although in investing you could say there is a stablecoins, by investing in mutliple cryptocurrencies which will allow you to diversify your portpolio to lessen the risk of losing your investment. Having multiple cryptocurrencies in your portpolio compensates the rising or dropping of each individual cryptocurrency. To put it simple, if one or more cryptocurrency in your portpolio drops while the other cryptocurrency rises, making your investment stable.

No coin is a stable coin in the crypto market because every coin depends on the price of Bitcoin, mostly people are majorly holding Bitcoin. Once the price of Bitcoin is kept reducing all other coin price start decreasing.

Simple as that! The main reason why we are here is because we want to invest in a coin with a product and solution and apparently a stable coin which apparently makes it centralized and controlled defeats that objective and since that is defeated, what is then the point? I would just rather stick with fiat like you said, since I know I will have my government to deal with if anything happens, than holding a centralized digital currency.

If I want stable I will move to fiat. What is the point holding a stable coin? It total shows one thing if it is stable, which the fact that it is centralized is, controlled and have nothing to offer than to close the normal fiat. So, why would I even trust those who have decided to launch a stable coin when I can just at least stick to the centralized fiat without worrying? I even find it hard to want to leave my holdings during a trade in USDT considering all the things that have been said.

I don't like the cryptocurrencies to be stable. We already have the flat money which is stable always the unpredictable nature of the cryptocoin price attracts so many traders to the market,so I think stability is not for the cryptocoins.
If we evaluate the coin price in BTC instead of dollar then LTC and ETH price are very much stable I think.

Exactly it is best thing in crypto currency that it is very unstable and it can move high and low, for now there is no currency has been that fluctuated how much fluctuation bitcoin has and it is the most attractive thing about bitcoin. people like bitcoin as when the buy bitcoin at low [rice and then they hold after holding finally they sell at most expensive price of bitcoin which make them happy and grateful, and financially secure, so bitcoin is an unstable coin and I really appreciate my bitcoin saving for it.

There are still no stable cryptocurrency so far, the main criteria to look for a crytpocurrency is the stability, scalability, decentralization and adaptablity. Most cryptocurrencies are volatile, for its volatility has an advantage for long term goal but a big risk for a short term trade. Even bitcoin as the pioneer of the cryptocurrency have not achieved its stability for its adaption to the masses it still not that wide. If we speak about stability their dependent to fiat or a main USD currency should be abolished and we deeply rely on crypto-crypto exchange and not on crypto to fiat .

I consider Bitcoin and Ethereum as stable coin but not their value, both coin are stable in the top of crypto market which has strong value even their value going dump and pump both coin are consistently profitable. That is why i choose these coins at my bucket to hold for long period of time because i believed that it would be more worth it,

Honestly, I wonder why I would want to leave my coins in all these fixed rate currencies when I can as well just trade it against fiat directly. I feel it is just a way for some devs to just generate some free coins for themselves with no real value or importance since we can just make use of fiat which is already serving that purpose. Even USDT right now is not trustworthy, so at least for something that I am sure I would not end up regretting, fiat remains the best option in this case for holding a stable currency.

Personally, the high volatility of the prices of CryptoCurrency is one of its advantages so I am not encouraged by the kind of stable currencies.
Generally, all rely on centralization making it useless.
One of the most important currencies that have a fixed price and depend on a future model of decentralization is Havven (my favorite stablecoin).

I use litecoin as a safe haven in the event of a breakdown

With what has been raised over the few months on tether, it just gives me one reason not to ever take any centralized digital currency seriously. It does not belong to this show and if I want to have my money in a stable currency, fiat is already serving that purpose at least, and the devil you know is better than the angel you do not know.

I see stable digital currencies as worthless and of no serious value or anything special it offers and as long as it is that way, I do not want to wake up one day to start hearing stories.

USDT is only one being stable in the crpyto currency market. Except this all the other crypto currencies will not be stable. Since the price volatility is high in the all cryptocurrency market you cannot expect the stability at all bro.
If you want to invest on stability income means you can go with mining. That too will fluctuate according to the difficulty changes on the number of investors increasing for the concern coin buddy. So op would not find the answer at all.

The concept of "stable" is not combined with the notion of "crypto-currency". Because now everyone is talking about crypto-currencies and how easy to earn money here and this attracts many inexperienced traders. In turn, big whales know about this and use newcomers. Therefore, I think for a long time there will not be a stable coin

We all know in crypto world there is no stable in price. The prices of coins are going up and down. Even bitcoin is also not stable in current situation but we can trust bitcoin. Because always bitcoin is the king in crypto world. No other coin will beat bitcoin. The price will have fluctuations but it will not never go down.

My favourite once is Ripple. The Market cap of Ripple is good along with its Volume and the price is stable. Neither it goes damn high nor damn low.  It is stable and that's why I like it so much.I hope it remains as it is.

To be Honest i haven't seen a sort of "stablecoin", even fiat, if you will just keep your fiat from time to time it will stay to what value it is in your beloved country but when traded to other country then the price always fluctuates it's either it goes up or down, so in other words there is no stability. I think OP is saying , what is your favorite coin that doesn't drop it's price double than the growth.

There's no such thing as an stable crypto currency even the most popular and with a good technology coin fluctuate's. Even for bitcoin because that is the nature of an decentralized digital money, volatility is in it's nature. The good thing about volatility is it enables you to profit unlike the stagnant stock market.

I totally agree on your post, the volume of bitcoin and other altcoins is totally can change its value every single minute. Sounds like, the only constant in crypto currency is changes, even local currency of course. So don't expect the word stablecoin.

Ripple is a low value coin, but it is really amazing coin. It is more powerful coin than Litecoin, Dash, Etc. Its really a stale coin, its value getting a little down than other altcoin. Peoples love this coin really.  I like ripple personally. I also support Dash, NEO, XLM.

Havven is a good stablecoin project. Found this that describes what they do:

Quote
The Havven platform uses two tokens to achieve stability. The havven token provides the collateral for the platform. Nomin tokens, a stablecoin, are issued against the value of the collateral token. This dual token approach incentivises users to hold havven tokens because network transaction fees are paid to havven holders. As more people use nomins for everyday transactions, the value of havven tokens will increase due to the higher fees generated.

Havven is a totally decentralised stablecoin, which means that, like bitcoin, it is secure and resistant to censorship. However, in contrast to Bitcoin, Havven uses a decentralised asset to reduce price volatility. The asset backing for the stablecoin comes from transaction fees generated by the Havven network. This means the asset is distributed and cannot be lost, stolen or seized.

I see a HUGE need for this in the market and for mass adoption in general.

Some of the exchanges provides a chance to exchange your bitcoin to usd not usdt which still I think is a better idea then trust some cryptocurrency with "stable" rate, that's not also a bad idea but trusted exhcange is better then cryptocurrency

Stablecoins have a very large total addressable market IMO.
I've been following the developments in Havven - they've got quite an impressive team and they've launched ETH-backed Nomins on Mainnet for a short period. It'll be interesting to see how they drive adoption.

Yes this exactly. Lots of people in this thread dont understand what a stablecoin is lol. I've been very impressed with their fast development and launch. This is what they posted - https://blog.havven.io/the-full-launch-of-eusd-is-coming-next-week-43e3f9ddc79

I want to say, I'm not sure there is a stable coin that I believe is entirely current. And we do not need stability because we can not make a profit if all the coins stabilize. You'd better change your coins into USD or local currency to avoid the dangers of being easy to change. And maybe USD  is an alternative to profit.

This situation has prompted Ethereum ETH to develop and launch the World Trade Francs (WTF) which is a decentralized 4.0 stablecoin that is solely based on the next-generation blockchain technology. The stablecoin particularly is tailored to develop a free trade as well as an economic interaction system that will integrate the next-generation blockchain alongside the hypercube tangle technology.

Ethereum is developing its own stable coin? Never knew about this. Thanks for the information. Coming to the question posted by op, I wouldn't rely on stable coins like USDT(Controversial) etc since unstability is an inherent property of cryptocurrencies which can be minimized, but cannot be eliminated completely. I feel like most stable coins could end up being scams since no coin or token is completely stable in this extremely volatile crypto market which is why I advise not investing into such coins. Instead, focus on investing into popular coins like Bitcoin etc.

Haha, good one ;D Look at the date and the official ticker symbol ...

The Forbes article is quite bad (typical "contributor" level). They do not even mention Bitshares (already mentioned by CoinHoarder (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;msg=34423995), NuBits, and the Steem dollar. I'm getting impression that the "author" thinks that crypto begun with ERC20 tokens  ::)  (in fact, Dai is pretty similar to BitShares).

Havven, however, was new to me. The system reminds me a bit of BItshares' "peer to peer collateral" but has some unique features like the transaction fees that add value to the collateral. However it seems still a system that relies pegs to fiat currencies (e.g. eUSD) and other "real world assets".

What is my favourite? For now, clearly Bitshares. NuBits has proven to be unreliable and the peg eventually collapsed, the Steem Dollar, in contrast, appreciated way too much for some time (so it became risky to buy it), and the centralized stablecoins (Tether et. al.) aren't really better than PayPal (only that you can track them on a public blockchain, but you can't track the reserves behind it). Dai and Havven can be competitors to BTS but we'll see if their pegs hold.

Never heard about Havven? Which exchanges have it? I would like to see more information about, because I tried tosearch and didn't found anything.

Yup... I agree with you. Whenever I need to make sure that my investment doesn't go down in value, I just convert them to USD. Tether is going through a lot of problems now. I will not trust that currency until they publish their audit findings.

Its known to all that,in the world nothing is stable and nothing is permanent..in cryptocurrency every  coin are not stable.every coin are stay in up and down.bitcoin stay in top of cryptocurrency world.at last I like bitcoin.

Cryptos generally are not that stable in nature. As its not being regulated so the stability factor is out of question and this also helps for people to expect the significant movement happening and you can make money from this rise.

We are as holder or investor in crypto world should know what is the main characteristic of crypto. Crypto has very volitle and it will never been stable.
If the bitcoin or other altcoin are stable then nobody will involve in bitcoin world because people  like its volatile to make profit from.it.

Yeah right, bitcoin is the king of crypto and it decided the value of other crypto currencies. If it goes up, others go up too. If it goes down, others are also down. So the most trusted coin of course is bitcoin but can't say it is stable. It is highly volatile but that's how the crypto works. Because of its volatile nature, we earn huge amount of profits too.

Well, do you really convert it into "USD" or, for example, into "BitstampUSD"?

Exchange "USD" wallets are equally risky than Tether and other centralized "stablecoins". You could obviously try to use the most "established" ones (like Bitstamp) but I think everybody here remembers an exchange called oficially "Magic The Gathering Online eXchange" ;D

(There is actually an exception: There are a few European exchanges, like Paymium, that store their USD funds in a wallet of a partnering "bank-like" payment processor. In this case, if the exchange ceased to operate, in theory the State "backs" the losses and will return amounts below 100000 EUR as part of the Deposit Insurance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deposit_insurance#European_Union).)

I want to say if I am not a fan of this fixed convertible coin/token like Tether. But I have seen some negative speculation about it, so I am not looking for it anymore. Crypto-Currency is closest to the stability that I get now. And also we do not need stability because we can not benefit if all coins become stable. You should change your coins into USD or local currency to avoid the dangers of being volatile.

I have created a List of Stablecoins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3421190.0). It includes only coins where the collateral or "backing reserves" are hold decentrally, so Tether et al. are not included.

I have identified two different "stablecoin mechanisms":
- decentralized issuing of stablecoins based on collaterals (BitShares, Dai, Havven ...)
- "floating supply" systems where supply is adjusted to demand - when price is low, tokens are taken out of circulation, and when price is high, new tokens are created (NuBits, Seigniorage Shares, Basis ...)

While I continue to believe that the BitShares protocol (and similar protocols like Havven and Dai/MakerDAO)  is much more solid than simple Nubits-based approaches (NuBits recently again fell under 60 cents  ::) ... ) the Basis (formerly Basecoin) protocol got my attention. It is, however, still in development and I have also not found information about its licensing terms, so it may be closed source or even patented.

Basis works a bit similar to NuBits but has a crucial difference: In low demand periods, supply is reduced by the system. But you can, in this case, buy "bonds" which are worth 1 Basis coin but have a lower price, and the Basis coins you used to buy them will be burnt. They will be returned 1:1 when the price is high. But if the price stays low, bonds eventually expire and get burnt totally. So the system can "contract" really - while in the case of NuBits and Seigniorage Shares it will continuosly expand.

I do not have any favorite stable coin because stable coins are for people who are scared to actually take any kind of risks with their money in order to make more money. I like the fact that cryptocurrencies are volatile, that is how you make money from investments, when the prices are down you buy and when they go up you sell, you just have to be patient enough to make the volatility work in your favor

They are really big and there is not regulations still in that space. Because of that they dont have to announce any private informations about their company or bank etc. I think that is normal too.

Not sure as I haven't done much due diligence on the topic. The only thing I know is that I will definitely stay away from Tether and may go for trueUSD or any other one that has been recently listed on Binance. I have heard good things about Dai as well.

I am not a very big fan of stable coins because i do not think that any of them are sustainable since their projects are not the kind that people are going to want to invest in given that an asset that does not move is least likely to make you any kind of money or profit but I would have to pick tether as the stable coin to go with since it has the highest number of investors

today, a stable coin can only be used to wait out the bad state of the market. Of course, every trader works with a coin, which fluctuates in price and earns with the help of price difference.

My favorite stable coin Paxos Standard Token(PAX). because it is controlled by a stable coin. Having a stable coin approved by the state of New York gives confidence. A stable coin approved separately from the SEC.

Every stablecoin is good and bad in some way. There are multiple kinds of stablecoins, too. The biggest ones right now like Tether, are seeing backlash because there is much controversy around if they are actually backing their tokens 1:1 with a USD.

I personally don't think there's any coin to be considered stable. Like you said, if coins become stable that means day traders will be out of business because they get profit from rise and fall of coins.

I agree, stablecoins aren't actually 'stable' at all.

And the most complicated aswell, I heard from some people that uses USDT or atleast store their wealth value in USDT asked for their importand data or went through KYC process. That'd be really troublesome for people if the money were frozen in the process.

But I think for a trader like me stable coin is very helpful at least for me. I don't know the mechanism of it but it save my money most of the time. But after the usdt incident I just decided to divided the most of it. If I have to hold stable coin now I hold some in usdt tusd and gemini. Stablecoun is helpful for me.

But established and promising coins I think are ripple, ethereum, eos, stellar, cardano. Ripple is one of my best coins that have much future. Stable coins are coins that have little or no disparity in price or value and examples of such are USDT, GUSD, TUSD and some others that are accepted as standards for coin pairing. Every other coin is subject to volatility.

Stable coins are US dollars backed coins that will protect the value of a person's cryptocurrency when it is converted. This means that aside from a few cents fluctuation below and above $1 the price pretty much is constant.
For this reason I don't see any point in choosing a favorite stable coin because they all serve the same purpose.
I use binance to trade mostly, this means that I use USDT mostly.

As for me i don't like stable coins at all. Stability is a relative concept. Stable coins are stable against USD because now it is the world currency but they have no future. In the future USD will lose its dominance and decentralize currencies will take its place. Real stability can be only in currencies with limited supply.

There is no stable coin in crypto world because everything changes in an instance and we can't control it. If  you are looking for an stability then cypto coins is not what you are looking for. Everything here is always changing and is volatile. That is the nature of crypto coins and it is really volatile. We should just be wise to buy coins with good potentials.

If we talk about stablecoin, we should of course mention about the USD Tether or TrusUSd because those coins always maintain a price by burning some coins or add more coins in the market. You can't expect cryptocurrency to be stable because those are not regulized by anyone. By the way, we don't like volatility? Or we don't like volatility for the sake of bearish market?

How not to say and bitcoin is the father of the cryptocurrency, I think it is the most stable

Bitcoin is not stable coin since its go with the series of pump and dump schemes which truly love by traders. But you could look the monero since for me that is the most stable coin so far and yet potential one to be hold with. And I would rather search for new potential ICO coins with working platform right now since those are the new thrend and maybe there's one of them would pump harder in future.

No coin is a stable coin in the crypto market because every coin depends on the price of Bitcoin, mostly people are majorly holding Bitcoin. Once the price of Bitcoin is kept reducing all other coin price start decreasing.

That's not necessarily true actually. Have you heard of Ampleforth's elastic supply policy?

Stablecoins are becoming more of a convenience for day traders and a popular way to hedge against volatility for investors and it really depends on what exchanges you are using and what kind of fees are involved, and not all of them are trustworthy i.e. have a fully transparent publicly available audit to backup their reserves so make sure you don't make frequent use of any that don't have these assurances

market movements are unpredictable because their movements can change rapidly and now there is often a red market. favorite coins and coins that have the potential to decrease in value, so there is currently nothing stable.
maybe Ethereum can go up again but if he rises as high as he ever reaches the highest score, in my opinion it's very difficult, because now the value is far from what he has ever achieved.
